FT SLIEE SSD ED NEAL TES 9 SE PLES Otel 1a ALE, : . Ge eerie ek ke a a ee ge a Biro Bo a nee ee Pe Oe PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CkKASS (id Hab | DURHAM ,NORTHCAROLINA Foreword As eager, immature sophomores, the class of '69 entered Hillside in the fall of '66 unprepared for the life that lay ahead. A bold and ambitious lot, we quickly began our metamorphosis from immature adolescents to responsible young adults. With the onset of maturity, an often slow and painful process, came a deter - mination and willingness to learn, to help, and to serve. Thus we felt upon our arrival a new beginning; a beginning filled with promises of a different way of lites These, then, were our years at Hillside; years filled with victory and defeat. These were the years that we laughed together and cried together. We shared our joys and our sorrows. This, the '69 Hornet, has endeavored to capture the spirit of these times. Between its covers lies the golden memories of our brief time in the halls of Hillside High. It has captured what we believe is the true spirit of '69. So, we take a nostalgic glance backward, as we reflect on our high school years. We leave Hillside with complex feelings. There is sadness for the loss of those gay, carefree days and anticipation for the uncertain future that lies ahead. Though the future is uncertain, one thing is certain. As sophomores, we came here young and unprepared, and as seniors we leave knowing that:we can, we must, we will endure. We, the graduating class of '69, believe that two people whom we have worked with have displayed the patience, endurance, compassion, understanding, wisdom, concern, and love that was necessary to mold us into responsible, mature young adults. We will forever remain grateful to them for their ceaseless efforts and feirce dedication as they firmly imprinted principles that will guide our lives. So it is with deep gratitude and respect that we, the Class of '69, dedicate this, the 1969 EDITION of THE HORNET to two we both love and respect . Lucas, Principal Congratulations are expressed to the Yearbook Staff (teachers and students) on the 1969 Edition of the Hillside High School Yearbook (The Hornet). Hard work and an unrelenting spirit guided your fine publication. TO THE CLASS OF 1969. You have, I hope, enjoyed three (3) years of meaningful study and a fine relationship at your Alma Mater, Hillside High School. The determination of your high school studies warrants sincere con- gratulations. May your future be guided by God and filled with new visions, equality of opportunities and a crystallization of true brotherhood for you, your parents, guardians, and friends. F. Howard Alston Assistant Principal Boys' Adviser Congratulations for being who you are! You are most fortunate to be graduating during such a whirlwind of events. A brief glimpse of your senior year mirrors a parade of startling experiences; some evoking sorrow, others joy. For it is during this time that your nation mourns the recent assassinations of two of its most illustrious sons; that you wince at the miserable state of foreign affairs; that you observe and inadvertently become participants in a struggle for the well-being and dignity of each human-being; and that you must even plan your own lives with uncertainty, for this is the condition of the times in which you live. And so--yours is an age of challenge! As you begin your new venture, keep in mind the advice of the Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, who said, ''Understand, however, that every man is worth just as much as the things are worth about which he busies himself. Soon, some bright day in June, the Hornet Family will be divided. This is a suitable ending to four years of togetherness, for in the beginning, we started upon our quest for knowledge at Shepard, Whitted, and various other junior high schools, Part of the mighty Hornet Family first made its debute at Whitted Junior High School. There the Vikings began their struggle to success in sports. William Covington lead the mighty Viking gridiron to numerous victories in football. Richard Peacock, Alvin Pitts, Donnie Crossland, Robert Rivers and Chris Kennell assisted him in fantastic football feats. Baseball, captained by Tyrone Alston, was well represented by players who would lead Hillside in its march to victory. The basketball team never tasted defeat under the able leadership of Frederick Clay, and with players like Tyrone Alston assist- ing, there is little wonder why the Vikings boasted such a fantastic team. The exceptional ability in the Vikings was truly displayed in the area of track. Donnie Crossland, Wil- liam Covington, Richard Peacock, and Robert Rivers took to the wind proving themselves worthy of the praise and admiration they received. Meanwhile, Shepard was not lagging in its achievements in sports. The outstanding Paul Stroud, along with Raymond Sharpe, Arnold Barnes, Leonard Lyons, Samuel Pratt, George Lipscomb, Willard Harris, Kenneth Herndon, Walter Lyon, and Gordon Matthew - son did a great deal to pour in honors and prove their school capable of outstanding basketball. Light footed was the word to describe Willard Harris, Phillip Umstead, Herman Watson, Michael Johnson, Robert Garrett and Linwood Green as they success- fully completed a track season that would go down in Shepard's history. Standing behind these mighty players cheering their hearts out were the ever faithful cheerleaders. At Whitted the line-up included Janet Owens, head-cheerleader, Marva Brown, Barbara Truitt, and Sybil Reddrick backing her up with vim and vigor. Shepard's squad was led by Debra McLaurin, Sadie McNeal, Kacellia Beamon, Rosa Jones, and Lucretia Long. Receiving superior ratings, Whitted's marching and concert band were well repre - sented by drum majorette, Marva Brown, along with Barbara Truitt, also a majorette. Marjorie Harrington offered her able assistance as band president. Student Council president for the Viking was Ava Armstrong while the Panthers at Shepard were led by Harriet Brooks. Finally the brawn and brains of these praise -worthy institutions were combined, and Vikings and Panthers became Hornets in the fall of ''66 . As the sophomore class of '67 imme rged, sophomore officers Charles Henderson, President; Garcia Sampson, Vice President; Beverly McLaughlin, Secretary; Valeria Hayes, Assistant Secretary; Barbara Truitt, Treasurer; and Marguaree Durden, Parlia- mentarian did their best in achieving voice and respect for their fellow classmates. Hillside gained more grace in its modern dance group with the addition of Judy Tapp, Yvonne Wilcher, Bettie Johnson, Jackie Channelle, Sheila Bullock, Valeria Hayes, Joann Roberts, Lila Armstrong, Wanda Haskins, Debra McLaurin, Vicki Unstead, and Sadie McNeal. Barbara Truitt received the honor of being Miss Sophomore Sweetheart. Her attend- ants were Peggy Spicer and Valeria Hayes. The Sophomore class was not totally out of things in '67 during the Junior -Senior Prom. Playing hosts and hostesses to the gala affair were Brenda McClain, Beverly McLaughlin, Marilyn Blake, Sheila Bullock, Judy Tapp, Wanda Haskins, Debra McLaurin, Darlene Knight, Peggy Spicer, Michael Brown, Arnold Barnes, Charles Henderson, William Kennedy, and Harold Smith. Thus, our first year at Hillside drew to a close. 96 In the fall of '67 we returned to Hillside eager to prove ourselves. Our Junior year began with promise as Garcia Sampson led the class as president. Vice President, Brenda McClain; Secretary, Phyllis Joyner; Assistant Secretary, Jacqueline Channelle: Treasurer, Charles Henderson; and Parliamentarian, Leonard Lyon did their part in establishing a beautiful administration. Beverly McLaughlin also served as secretary of the Student Council. Honoring themselves and the Junior Class, twenty-one students were inducted into the National Honor Society. Jacqueline Channelle, Johnetta Roberts, Lorraine Ford, Darlene Knight, Brenda McClain, Gloria Thorpe, Barbara Truitt, Ava Armstrong, Judy Tapp, Valeria King, Mary Neal, Garcia Sampson, Eleanoise Roberts, Glenn Pettiford, Deborah Rogers, Beverly McLaughlin, Deborah Long, Elaine Harris, Bettie Johnson, Jackie Rogers, and Gail Mason were inductees symbolizing the character, leadership, and service so outstanding in the class. Unlike the procedures of the past, the Junior Class of 68 experienced the privi- lege of a Jun ior Week. To end the festive mood, the Grand Finale featured a Junior-A- Go-Go, written by Gloria Thorpe. Participants in the play were William Covington, Dr. Shagoo-goo; Kacellia Beamon, Narrator; and Barbara Truitt, Associate Narrator. Finally, prom night arrived. Under the setting of Roman Holidays, Alton Joyner escorted Evelina Mack, Miss Junior Sweetheart, in the Waltz which was done with grace and charm. Following them were James Lillie, Kacellia Beamon, Walter Lyon, Ronald Coleman, Joann Roberts, Garcia Sampson, Alvin Pitts, Richard Barnes, Sheila Bullock, Rubye Corbitt, Gloria Thorpe, and David Sellars. Linda Barbee, Shelia Leathers, and Rubye Corbitt were Miss Junior Sweetheart's attendants. Prom night ended which brought greater anticipation to both junior and senior clas- ses. Honored as Marshalls for the 1968 Commencement exercises were Ava Arm- strong, Lorraine Ford, Johnetta Roberts, and Gail Mason. Over the summer of 1968 Charles Henderson and Darlene Knight represented the Hornet family at Boys’ and Girls’ State in Winston-Salem and Greensboro respectively. And so, the Class of '69 entered these hallowed halls for the last time in September of 1968 with hope, anticipation, and excitement. Heading the Student Council was Garcia Sampson. Assisting him was Beverly Mc- Laughlin, Vice President; Sheila Bullock, Corresponding Secretary; Jackie Channelle, Recording Secretary; Judy Tapp, Treasurer; Donnie Crosslan d, Parliamentarian; Charles Henderson, Vice President; and William Kennedy, President; led the Senior Class asits Class officers. The versatile Miss Janet Owens reigned as Miss Hillside with goodness and beauty. Her coronation was a lovely affair; and her court, first attendant, Sadie McNeal and second attendant, Marva Brown, framed her every charm. Sports held its own over that memorable year as track took the lead in our winning sports. William Covington, Richard Peacock, Phillip Umstead, Herman Watson, Vic- tor Morrison, Gordon Matthewson, and Donnie Crossland made up the track team moving swiftly and surely to many victories. The mighty Hornet cagers Tyrone Alston, Arnold Barnes, Frederick Clay, Joe John- son, George Lipscomb, Victor Morrison, Raymond Sharpe, and Eric Ruth saw vic- tories and defeats, but the Hornet spirit remained in tack. The Hornet Gridiron experienced a fairly successful year with seniors Richard Pea - cock, William Covington, Victor Morrison, Daryl Crawford, Alvin Pitts, Phillip Um- stead, Gordon Matthewson, Donnie Crosland, Christopher Kennell, James Lillie, Ronald Coleman, Richard Barnes, Robert Rivers, Thomas Gilmer, and Walter Lyon, working and playing their hearts out. Unlike the basketball team, the football boys: choose a Homecoming Queen, lovely and humble, Valeria Anita Hayes. Her court in- cluded Constance Prince, first attendant; Kacellia Beamon and Sadie McNeal, second attendants. 97 The school newspaper, the Chronicle, was edited by Phyllis Joyner with Bernard Easterling as associate editor. Other staff members of the Chronicle were Johnetta Roberts, Alton Joyner, Darlene Knight, Eve Beamon, Barbara Truitt, Parepa McCrea, and Brenda Hopkins. Johnetta Roberts was responsible for the production of the yearbook, The Hornet. Her staff included Phyllis Joyner, Alton Joyner, Bernard Easterling, Kacellia Beamon, Cherry Haskins, Darlene Knight, Eric Ruth, Judy Tapp, Harry Edmonds, Sam Pratt, Beverly McLaughlin, Wanda Haskins, Joann Roberts, and Charles Henderson. Soon after school reopened in the fall of 1968, two students were chosen by the fac- ulty and administration to represent Hillside at the first Rhododendren Yearbook Con- ference held at Boone, North Carolina. The individuals were Johnetta Roberts and Phyllis Joyner, editors of The Hornet and the Chronicle respectively. The band, as usual, demonstrated their excellency as they marched with Milton Glenn, Drum Major and Marva Brown, Head Majorette. Receiving superior ratings at many concerts and contests, the band proved themselves worthy of their famed reputa- tion. The senior majorettes were Rebecca Hayes, Barbara Truitt, and Marva Brown. Keeping together the Spirit of '69 were the romping and raving cheerleaders. Valeria Hayes led the lot consisting of Kacellia Beamon, Sadie McNeal, Sybil Reddick, Wanda Haskins, Lucretia Long, Sheila Bullock, and Joann Roberts. Yes, these are the events that made the Class of '69 great. Its victories, its de- feats, its happiness and its deepest sorrows shaped the hearts and minds of the Hornet family and led it to where it stands today. But as we depart from our Alma Mater, let us not forget what we have learned here. Let us not forget what we have experienced here. Let us not forget the friends we have made. As we plan our futures, let us not forget our dreams. Let us not forget our hopes and desires. And, as our futures unfold, let us always remember: The world stands out on either side No wider than the heart is wide; Above the world is stretched the sky, No higher than the soul is high. The heart can push the sea and land Farther away on either hand; The soul can split the sky in two, And let the face of God shine through. But East and West will pinch the heart That cannot keep them pushed apart; And he whose soul is flat--the sky Will cave in on him by and by.
