F. Howard Alston Assistant Principal Boys' Adviser I accept with pleasure an opportunity to congratulate the hard-working team of students and advisers who have produced this 1968 edition of the HILLSIDE HORNET. Each year new designs, ideas, and personnel have gained the respect and admiration of the yearbook subscribers. Your edition is no exception. It is with mixed emotions that I say farewell to the class of '68. Iam some- what saddened, for your presence will be missed after your graduation; I am pleased for you are eager to tackle new experiences; I am proud, for your suc- cess means another milestone for the Hillside Family; I am apprehensive for your future holds many challenges and untapped resources. I trust that in all of your pursuits you will never forget that every man, by virtue of his humanity, has dignity and value. Each of you can become what you aspire to be. They have been ones of joy, sor- row, Challenge, and accomplishment. So join us, now, as we place our jewels upon the crown. In August 1964, the division of our first jewel was the result of two seperate freshman classes, one at Whitted Junior High and the other at Shepard Junior High School. The crystallization of our first jewel was begun under the very able leader - ship of Jennifer Durham at Whitted, and Brenda Hopkins at Shepard. The shim- mering facet of the National Junior Honor Society was graced with these members: Carlton McNair, Ronald Hatcher, Al Jerry Fisher, Harold Brown, Shirley Womble, Yvonne Holman, Mary Thomas, Selliesteen Worsley, Lauren Brown, Jane Johnson, Anita Cox, and Phyllis Thompson. The Whitted Mirror sparkled with the presence of Mary Mitchiner as Feature Editor, Lewis Brown as Reporter, Donald Bellamy as Business Manager, Roberta Hockaday as Cir- culation Editor, and Silas Mayfield as Sports Editor. Through the gleaming rays of our gem there shines a radiant basketball team with such valuable players as Vernon Allen, Raymond Burroughs, Samuel Hampton, Paul Mayfield, Larry Peace, Floyd Watkins, Tommy Bullock, and Dwight Womble. Shining on Shep - ard's Basketball team were Phillip Chavis, Harvey Hinton, Otis Alston, Gregory Brewer, James Younge, Micheal Ruth, Vernon Chambers, Chester Daye, Doug- las Toomer, and Clarence Giles. On the track team there were at Whitted, Douglas Harris, Harvey Prince, Larry Peace, Vernon Allen, Raymond Bur - roughs, Norman Watson, Frank Horne, Dennis Johnson, Rudolph Bellamy, and Jerry Holder, our most assessable members. With the exception of Phillip Cha- vis and Clarence Giles, the members of Shepard's track team contained the same valuable players as those on the basketball team. As the freshman year united to form our first jewel, it was then accompa- nied by our second gem, our sophomore year. We were guided throughout this year under the stewardship of Jennifer Durham, and Selliestean Worsley. The facets of the National Junior Honor Society remained constant. Harvey Hinton, Kenneth Jeffries, George Suggs, James Younge, Dwight Price, Gregory Brewer, Larry Peace, Otis Alston, Everette Harrington, Kenneth Wall, Dwight Womble, Rudolph Bellamy, Vernon Chambers, Boyd Jones, and Micheal Harris tooktheir place among the Hillside football team. Through our gleaming crystal we see on the basketball team Dwight Womble, Paul Mayfield, Samuel Hampton, Vernon Allen, and Tommy Bullock. This jewel, as it is set upon our crown, will for- ever be among our most cherished memories. We entered Hillside High in the Fall of 1966 as juniors to begin the forma- tion of our third jewel. Our Junior Year was led by Carlton McNair, Yvonne Holman, Brenda Henry, Shirley Womble, Wanda C. Brown, Lewis Brown and Phyllis Thompson. Leading our class in the five Principle Cardinals of the Na - tional Honor Society were Carlton McNair, Ronald Hatcher, Brenda Henry, Brenda Hopkins, Jane Johnson, Al Jerry Fisher, Lauren Brown, Yvonne Holman, Mary Thomas, Shirley Womble, Brenda Watson, and Allyson Duncan. Our Class was well represented by math scholars: Carlton McNair, Shirley Womble, Ron - ald Hatcher, Al Jerry Fisher, and Allyson Duncan who were inducted into the honorary math club, Mu Alpha Theta. Our eleventh grade facet of the football team was a gleaming replica of our tenth grade facet. Also during our junior year, there were several great radiant events such as Junior Day and the Ju- nior-Senior Prom. At the height of these activities, Phyllis Thompson was crowned Miss Junior Sweetheart. She was accompanied by her ee noe : Selliestean Worsley and Brenda Henry. With the theme On a tropical ae ae our class colors were apple green and canary yellow. A erOuy Somat | oo juniors really sparkled as they graced the seniors with the traditional waltz. 33 We were truly radiant that night as we had lived up to our motto, We can only pay our debts to the past by putting the future in debt to ourselves. Thirty-two juniors, in full formal attire ushered for Senior Class Night. We had as our ushers: Shirley Womble, Wanda Brown, Harold Brown, Otis Alston, Allyson Duncan, Thomasina Council, Lewis Brown, Gloria Alston, Phillip Cha- vis, David Harrison, Anita Cox, Dwight Womble, Theresa Hill] Carlton =Me- Nair, Yvonne Holman, Ernest Sellars, Phyllis Thompson, Ronald Lloyd, Bev - erly Strudwick, Brent Robinson, Carmen Ellison, Diane Hart, Deborah Burnette, Xenia Halfacre, Jacqueline Ruffin, and Gwendolyn Mayo. The chief ushers for the occasion were Angela Tyson and Richard Clinton. The Student Marshals for the 1967 Commencement Exercise were Brenda Henry, Carlton McNair, Allyson Duncan, and Brenda Hopkins. The Ushers, who were selected on an honor basis, were Brenda Watson, Shirley Womble, Wanda Brown, Gloria Alston, Eunice Lyons, Jane Johnson, Jennifer Durham, Lauren Brown, Sellies- tean Worsley, Deborah Burnette, Floretta Liverpool, Claudia Brame, Mary Thomas, Phyllis Thompson, Jacqueline Mangum, Yvonne Holman, Mary Mitch- iner, Al Jerry Fisher, Harold Brown, Larry Freeland, Harvey Hinton, David Harrison, Alfred Brown, Ronald Hatcher, Samuel Sutton, Danny Watson, Dwight Price, and Larry Peace. For the oncoming year, Micheal Ruth was elected president of the Student Council; Yvonne Holman, vice president; Shirley Womble assistant secretary; Cynthia Criss, treasurer; William Stanley, Parliamentar - ian; and Theresa Lee Hill, our ''Miss Hillside. As we entered Hillside High for the last time in the fall of 1967, we began to mold our last precious stone. Our class was led by Aaron Smith, Everette Har- rington, Brenda Henry, Wanda Brown, Stephanie Wilson, Gloria Alston, Ann McMillon, and Harvey Hinton. Once more the facet of the National Honor So- ciety began to glitter; Wanda C. Brown, Gloria A. Alston, Eunice T. Lyons, and Deborah A. Burnette. The officers of the National Honor Society for this, our last, year were Brenda Hopkins, president; Brenda Watson, vice-president, Jane Johnson, secretary; Brenda Henry, assistant secretary; and Carlton Mc- Nair, treasurer. The highlight of the fall social events was the Coronation of Miss Hillside, Theresa Lee Hill, who truly represented the Hillside ideals. Her maids of honor were Phyllis Thompson and Phillinda Cannon, first and sec- ond attendants, respectively. Her court was composed of Gloria Alston, Thoma - sina Council, Anita Cox, Mary Davis, Ruby Devine, Xenia Halfacre, and Judith Spears. In the Durham Christmas Parade, The Hillside Float was splendidly trimmed with Miss Hillside and her maids of honor. The editing of the Chron- icle was headed by Carmen Ellison, editor-in-chief and co-editors, Larry Free- land and Kenneth Collins. The 1968 Hornet Staff was headed by Lewis Brown as editor and Ronald Hatcher as co-editor. We owe much of our success to senior co-captains Gregory Brewer and Ken- neth Jeffries for leading the Hornet Football team to another year of victory. This mighty team was comprised of Everette Harrington, Harvey Hinton, George Suggs, Otis Alston, Vernon Chambers, Kenneth Wall, Dwight Womble, Dwight Price, James Younge, James Garner, and Rudolph Bellamy. Our co-cap- tains were elected as members of the NCHSAC All-Eastern 4-A. Our Home- coming was indeed a suspense -packed affair, climaxed with the crowning of Miss Homecoming, Jennifer Durham, at the game. Attending her were Cynthia Criss and Phyllis Thompson, first and second attendants respectively. This year, for the first time, Miss Homecoming was elected by the Student Body from a group of radiant beauties selected by the football team. The Hornet Basketball Season was led by co-captains Dwight Womble and Kenneth Wall, who paved the way for Vernon Allen, Micheal Ruffin, and Otis Alston. Larry Freeland, Ken- neth Jeffries and Larry Williams served as statisticians and trainers for the team. Katrina Goldston yelled us through our victories as cheerleader captain. Participating in the track were Gregory Brewer, Silas Mayfield, Harvey Hinton, William Stanley, Harvey Prince, Dwight Price and Micheal Ruth. We gained state-wide recognition by having three National Achievement Scholars. They were Allyson Duncan, Dwight Greene and Carlton McNair. 34 We have not placed our final jewel upon our crown and the time has come when we must reach out for jewels to place in other crowns. As we part and as each goes his own way, we, the class of 1968 add the last facet to our jewel and mount it upon our crown, There is no death! the stars go down To rise upon some other shore And bright in Heaven's jeweled crown They shine for ever more.
