THE 1963 HORNET Published by the Students of Hillside High School Durham, North Carolina 1 Foreword With the passage of years, you may look back upon this school ye ar as the time when the dark¬ ness of ignorance suddenly be¬ came bright with the gleam of knowledge. To preserve a record of these moments and the countless other experiences of you and your classmates, this annual strives to capture the eyes and mind” of the scholarship, the leadership, the activities, and the character of Hillside High School. 2 Mr. Frank Howard Alston, better known as Prof to many, is a familiar and well- liked person at Hillside High School. Formerly a Chemistry instructor at Hillside, he is now assistant principal and the Dean of Boys. When our former principal, Mr. Harold Marion Holmes, had to leave because of illness during the latter part of the 1961-62 school term, Mr. Alston immediately stepped into the vacancy of principal and the remainder of the school year progressed as usual. Mr. Alston is often heard coming down the hall using one of his ever famous phrases, Okay sister, Check you out later, or Ah, Bro! Because of his personal connections with our academic community in general, we dedicate this, our 1963 edition of the Hornet, to Mr. Frank Howard Alston. 3 1963 4 HORNET Co-editors Joy Beale Nathaniel White Advisors Mrs. V. Class Motto No Man Can Rise Above That Which He A ims. Class Colors Blue and White Class Flower American Beauty Rose Keys to Our Past Come with us, the senior class of 1963, to recall and review some highlights of our high school career. The 1959 school term began with the installation of the new James A. Whitted Junior High School Student Council officers. Barbara Johnson was the only 1963 senior to hold an office that year. In the spring, the James A. Whitted Junior High Band and Orchestra traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina, for their annual band 28 festival, at the Agricultural and Technical College. The Orchestra and Band received ratings of superior and excellent, respectively. Graduating students from Whitted Junior High School having attained the highest honors scholastically were Natalie Marshall and Mary Mitchell tying for first place, and Dorothy Amey, second place. On August 31, 1960, the senior class of 1963 entered the famous halls of Hillside High School. Upon arrival, several of our classmates successfully made the ’’mighty” Hornet s football team. These successful young men were William Burroughs, Benjamin Carrington, Wesley Clement, Frank Flowers, Fred Green, Paul Lyons, Robert Hayes, Charles McNeil, Dale Norman and Jesse Pratt. And so went football season, and in came the basketball season; among the young men that participated on the Hornet s Junior Varsity basketball team were William Burroughs, Benjamin Carrington, Wesley Clement, Frank Flowers, Fred Green, Paul Lyons, Paul Kelly, Dale Norman, and Jesse Pratt. Ann Jones was selected Miss Hillside.” The officers of our sophomore class were Robert Perry, president; Joy Beale, vice-president; Julia James, recording secretary; Jacqueline Davis, corresponding secretary; Natalie Marshall, treasurer; Laura Brewer, social committee chairman; Mary Mitchell, program committee chairman; Florence Kee, reporter; Benton Burnette, parliamentar¬ ian; Victoria Lyon, invitation committee chairman; Ruby Carraway, decoration com¬ mittee chairman. In the spring of 1961, Dorothy Amey, Joy Beale, Natalie Marshall, Mary Mitchell, Sandra Wray and Nettie Young were selected as probationary mem¬ bers in the Hillside High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. Mr. John H. Gattis held his annual Swing School presentation. The 1963 senior participants were Joy Beale, Emily Norman, Mildred Black, Sandra Wray, Larry Spann, Sandra Knuckles, Benjamin Pippen, Kyle Schooler, Theo Currington, Milton Grant, Benton Burnette, Chester Williams, Victoria Lyons and many others. It was a glorious event and a treasured memory. Emily Norman, Patricia Lyon, Barbara Morrison, Julia James, Frankie Blunt, James Brown, Robert Blow, William Burroughs, Frank Flowers and Dale Norman served as hosts and hostesses of the Junior-Senior Prom. In August, 1961, the senior class of 1963, entered Hillside High School as Juniors. The officers of our Junior class were Nettie Young, president; Larry Spann, vice- president; Celesta Ferrell, recording secretary; Frankie Blunt, corresponding secre¬ tary; Kyle Schooler, treasurer; Linda Conyers, social committee chairman; Milton Grant, program committee chairman; and Chester Williams, decoration committee chairman. Robert Blow was elected assistant layout editor of the 1962 Hornet. Barbara Johnson, Janet Knight, Nathaniel White, Glenn Long, Brenda Thompson, Deloris Boone, Gloria Snipes, Ruth White, Joy Beale, Dorothy Amey, Mary Mitchell, Natalie Marshall, Sandra Wray, and Nettie Young were installed in the Hillside High Chapter of the National Honor Society. Our Junior class made preparations for the Junior-Senior Prom, we chose for our theme, An Evening in Paris, and our colors were Nile Green and Baby Pink. On awards day many of our classmates received awards, letters and other honors. Robert Perry and Benton Burnette served as head marshals of the 1962 senior class night. For graduation and commencement, Mary Mitchell and Nathaniel White served as chief ushers. It was also during the latter part of our junior year that our dear principal, Mr. Harold M. Holmes retired from active duty. We shall always hold him dear in our hearts. Out marched our junior year and forward marched our senior year at Hillside. As we, now seniors of 1963, entered Hillside for our last year, we encountered a stranger with a pleasing personality and an excellent disposition. This stranger was none other than our new principal, Mr. John Harding Lucas. Our senior officers were Robert Perry, president; Larry Spann, vice-president; Gladys Giles, recording secre¬ tary; Joy Beale, corresponding secretary; Jesse Pratt, treasurer; Kyle Schooler, parliamentarian; Ruth White, reporter; Alexander Rjberson, chairman of the benevolence committee. The officers of the 1962-63 National Honor Society were Glenn Long, president; Nathaniel White, vice-president; and Joy Beale, secretary. The senior officers of the Student Council for 1963 were Walter Jackson, president; 29 Milton Grant, vice-president; Julia James, secretary; Kyle Schooler, treasurer; and Amos Williams, parliamentarian. Joy Beale and Nathaniel White served as co-editors of the 1963 Hornet. Emily Norman and Janet Knight served as secretaries. Other officers were Barbara Morrison, and Dorothe Amey, business managers; Mary Mitchell and Sandra Wray, layout editors; Robert Blow, advertising manager; and Robert Perry, assistant advertising manager; Brenda Thompson, treasurer; and Barbara Johnson, assistant to the treasurer. The co-editors of the 1963 editions of the Chronicle, our school newspaper, were Gloria Snipes and Ruth White. Charles McNeil served as captain of the mighty Hornet ' s football team. Wesley Clement and James Dempson served as co-captains. Other outstanding senior players were Dale Norman, Frank Flowere, Fred Green, Benjamin Carrington, Robert Hayes, John McGill, William Burroughs, William Tucker, Jesse Pratt, William Forte, and several others. Mildred Black was selected Miss Homecoming of 1962-63. Her attendents were Deloris Nicholson, first runner-up, and Gladys McDonald, second runner-up. I guess you are wondering why we know so much about our 1963 senior class. Well, we are Emily Jo Norman and Barbara Morrison. For Better or For Worse? Mr. Harold Holmes has been a very active pro¬ moter of high school education for many years. He has shown this overwhelming in¬ terest during the time that he served as principal of our school. Mr. Holmes began his administration in 1948, readily accepting the responsibility of a rapidly growing school. He was patient, tolerant, and dedicated to every phase of high school activity, relying upon his judgement to eliminate what might be harmful and to preserve and protect what might be helpful in promoting and improving the quality of education. In 1962 Mr. Holmes unwillingly resigned from his position because of illness. The class of 1964 was the last class enrolled under his administration. Therefore, on behalf of the Class of 1964, the HORNET Staff of 1963 dedicates this page to Mr. Harold Marion Holmes. 66 r f JUNIORS Junior Class Officers Robert Stevens--president; Rhonda Armstrong-- secretary; Samuel Criss--vice-president; Janice Allen--chairman of invitation committee; Gwen¬ dolyn Adkinson--assistant secretary; Junious Jones— chairman of decoration committee; Mildred Mc- Keever—reporter; Christopher Fisher--treasurer; Peggy Jones--chairman of program committee; Margret Holmes--chairman of social committee. These keys in number Are only three, But there are others That you should see And when they are put to proper use, The greatest of walls you can reduce; There is no mountain which can ' t be climbed; There is no word which can ' t be rhymed. The greatest of tasks Can be done with ease If you happen to find The Proper Keys. What are these other keys of which I speak? Just look around or take a peak. Faith, Hope, and Charity are among those you ' ll note, And these are the types that will put you in the boat. Keys to Victory This school year our football team opened the doors to many victories and many enjoyable games. On August 31, 1962 it jour¬ neyed to Carver High of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Although our football team wasn ' t the victorious one of that game, the Hill¬ side family knew that eventually our husky football players would bring victory to the campus. Over all our stinging Hornets finished with a very successful season. They won eight games and lost two. The first defeat was by only two points, and the second by only one point. The most outstanding players were Charles McNeil who made the-All-State Team, and Wesley Clement, James Dempson and John McGill who were all chosen members of the Eastern All-Star Shrine Team. Other remarkable senior players were Dale Nor¬ man, William Forte, Fred Green, William Tucker, Jesse Pratt, William Burroughs, Benjamin Carrington, Frank Flowers, Alton Teasley, Sylvester Harper, Robert Hayes, Alexander Roberson, Bernard Austin, Robert Johnson, Amos Williams, and Earl Bur¬ nette . Our deep appreciation goes to Kyle Schooler and Paul Lyons who were such dependable statisticians. Many thanks are extended to the many juniors and sophomores who helped tremendously to make those never forgettable victories possible. --Wray Knuckles Hornet Scoreboard Hillside.26 Hillside.64 Hillside.6 Hillside.10 Hillside.27 Hillside.14 Hillside.33 Hillside.13 (Homecoming) Hillside.29 Hillside.19 Carver.
