A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS Ah, but a man ' s reach should exceed his grasp, Or what ' s heaven for? --Browning. Man ' s reach is his dream for things. If one is not reaching he is standing still, for the es¬ sential thing in life is not conquering but fighting on and well. You will soon be finding the world around you filled with so many astonishing changes that you will pause and wonder how you ever got along in the old days of a few years ago. Man is delving into the biological cell; he is exploring outerspace; he is reaching for that which is good. That which you have is valuable but not nearly sufficient for the stepped up pace of the nuclear age. You must increase your knowledge of the things that are God ' s and those that have already been revealed to us by God. You must hold on the things that lead you closer to the bounty of God ' s love. Only educated men and women will be able to cope with the thousands of complications which modern economics and living conditions impose. Work at the job of getting an education while you are in high school and finish with the self-satisfaction that you have done your best. This is all that is expected of you, but this certainly is expected of all individuals. You have high school in your grasp; reach for college if you have the interest and ability. The end of the next decade will determine those who have taken advantage of training. There is a niche for each of you. The old barriers between you and sought for positions will be torn down sooner than you will be able to train yourself. Your position in a changing world will depend on your ability to adjust yourselves to this new environment. To students of Hillside, In your hands we place a great heritage. Guard it well. As for the future, A man ' s reach should exceed his grasp. 19 s4ctvc n ?. ' ZottKe ' ' ' 4ctvc4 n TtOi. ?. “rlf. s4(4t6 t 20 0 Defr4sU He tt Left to right: Mrs. V. S. Willis Mr. J. H. Gattis Miss F. ' iR e HU€t4ce tce t6e 60 To the Class of I960, we present the highlights of your high school days. The things that have happened dur¬ ing those years now bring back old memories. You became orientated into high school life at James A. Whitted Junior High School, where you were then classified as freshmen. Barbara Ann Walker served as president of the student council; Judith Burton, Eleanor Hinton, Claude Verbal and Charles Stanback served as vice-president, secretary, treasurer and parliamentarian, respectively. Whitted had its first marching band that year with James White as drum major; Eleanor Hinton as head majorette. Eileen Turner, Naomi Lowery, Mary Boyd, Patricia Wil¬ liams and Ruby McCauley were also majorettes. Carolyn Plummer and Withro Wiggins wrote the words to the Whitted School Song. You have always liked Rock and Roll music, and to top this off James Barnes, LeRoy Walker, Charles Stanback, Ronald Moore, Larry Schrlock, and Billy Clement called themselves the Combo Kids. They played all the latest hits. They even played for you at your ninth grade prom. You were really swinging. Don ' t forget that Eleanor Hinton and William Bowling reigned as King and Queen of the prom that year. Though most of your class exhibited good potentials, Betty Goodloe and Irma Page graduated from Whitted Junior High with highest honors and were awarded the Scholastic Average Awards. With great anticipation you entered Hillside High in September 1957. You got off to a very good start. 28 Our sophomore year 10-1 won second place in the Combined Charities Drive. Catherine Pratt won second prize in the Miss Hillside Contest. Major Geer, Betty Goodloe, Irma Page, Charles Stanback, James Stevens, and Marsha Goodwin were probationary members of the National Honor Society. Irma Page, Evelyn Kennedy, and Major Geer won first, second, and third places, respectively in the biology division of the Science Fair. Your sophomore class was also athletic. Charles Stanback, James Barnes, Claude Verbal, Charles Daye, Bobby Blue, Harrison Lyons, Leonard Burton, Otis Wright, Albert Johnson, Leon Cole and Sylvester Harris joined the football squad. Harrison Lyons and Gustov Jones joined the varsity basketball team. James Barnes, Sylvester Harris and LeRoy Walker were on the Junior Varsity. The members of Hillside ' s new dance group were Evelyn Kennedy, Barbara A. Walker, Dorothy Burkett, Eleanor Hinton, Barbara Weaver, Lucille Black, Benjamin Strudwick, James Barnes, Albert Johnson, Larry Scurlock and Anderson Council. Our new dance group gave many colorful perform¬ ances. Realizing the great task you had before you Miss A. R. Cruse, Junior Class Co-ordinator, got you off to a good start in your junior year. You elected the following people for Junior Class Officers: Larry Scurlock, president; Major Geer, vice-president; Mary Boyd, recording secretary; Eleanor Hinton, corresponding secretary; Carolyn Plummer, treasurer; James Barnes, Decoration Committee Chairman; Ann Thomas, Invitation Committee Chair¬ man; Betty Goodloe, Program Committee Chairman; and Celestine Flintall, Social Committee Chairman. Catharine Pratt was elected parliamentarian of the Student Council. Eileen Turner won the County Spelling Contest. Betty Goodloe, James Stevens and Major Geer won first, second and third places respectively in the chemistry division of the Science Fair. James Stevens reached the semi-finals in the National Merit Competi¬ tion. Do you recall the fact that you have Sleeping Beauty in your class? Yes, Helen Davis was Sleeping Beauty in Mr. G ' s Swing School. John Washington won the Elks Oratorical Contest. Rosie Snipes and Joycelyn McKissick were elected Co-editors of the Chronicle. Some members of our English class took a trip to Williams¬ burg, Virginia. Marsha Goodwin, Evelyn Kennedy, June Rosser, Eileen Turner, Carolyn Plummer, and Carolyn Skinner were members of the Girls ' Varsity Tennis Team. Your most fabulous event of your junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom which you gave for the seniors. Johnny Morgan, senior class president, presented the key to Larry Scurlock, the junior class president. Betty Goodloe, chairman of the Program Committee, presented the program. Marsha Goodwin sang for you on that night. The most spectacular event of the evening was the Junior Waltz. Finally, after three years of waiting and learning you entered your long-awaited senior year. Joycelyn McKis¬ sick and Larry Scurlock were admitted to Durham High School; they were among the first students to integrate in the Durham City Schools. Major Geer took the responsibility of Co-editor of the Chronicle to replace Joycelyn. The senior class officers were Claude Verbal, president; James Barnes, vice-president; Earnestine Brown, record¬ ing secretary; Lucille Black, corresponding secretary; Constance Sartor, reporter; Henry Gunn, parliamentarian; and Cloyce Lassiter, Welfare and Benevolence Committee Chairman. The class colors were blue and white; class flower, American Beauty Rose. The officers of the Student Council were installed. They were James Stevens, president; William Clement, vice-president; Mary Boyd, secretary; Eleanor Hinton, assistant secre¬ tary; Barbara Ann Walker, treasurer; and Catharine Pratt, parliamentarian. Betty Goodloe was Miss Homecom¬ ing with Catharine Pratt and Eileen Turner serving as attendants. 12-4 won the Combined Charities Drive for the sixth consecutive year. The senior class presented its class play on December 2, 1959. The title of the play was Lights Out. Henry Gunn, Constance Sartor, Eileen Turner, Evelyn Kennedy, Mary Martin, James Pointer, Wylma McIntyre, Carolyn Watson, Major Geer, William Bowling and Benjamin Strudwick were members of the cast. Your football team won the Eastern District Championship. They also played Atkins High of Winston-Salem for the State Championship. Jimmy Barnes, and Mickey Daye were Co-captains; Red Johnson, Sug Wright, Cush Walker, Charles Stanback, Booby Blue, Sylvester Harris, and Wilbert Nunn were the senior players on the team. Jimmy Barnes, Charles Stanback, Bud” Lyons, Booby Blue and Mickey Daye were selected for the State All-Star team. You acted as hosts to a group of foriegn students from the university of North Carolina. We leave this thought with you--your class motto-- Act well your part; there all the honor lies. We know you wonder how we know so much about you. Well, we have been a part of these glorious years al- also. For we are-- Bunny Kennedy and Cloyce Lassiter. 29 SetUon, MOST PLEASING PERSONALITY Rozena Brown Jamf s White . - BEST LOOKING Henry. As a result of this growth, few, if any, businesses in America offer a wider variety of employment for well-qualified young men and women. For example, North Carolina Mutual has in its employ over fifty job categories; such as, salesmen, managers, executives, accountants, technicians, lawyers, doctors, stenographers, clerks, typists, and food service workers. Whatever your field of specialization, there could well be a rewarding career for you in life insurance. William Douglas Thompson of St. Joseph Street, a junior at Hillside High School and the driver of the car, died instantly of a fractured skull. His body was found under two feet of water in a creek 40 feet away from the crushed car. William Bowling, 18, of Ridge¬ way Avenue, a graduating sen¬ ior, sustained multiple injuries and was pinned in the automo¬ bile. He was in “fair” condition Thursday night at Lincoln Hos¬ pital. State Highway Patrolman Charles Phillips said the car, operated north on the highway, went out of control, “sailed through the air,” clipping tops from small trees, went down an embankment, traveled about 150 hards and overturned several The car was “definitely travel¬ ing at a very high rate of speed,” he said. t fill WmmM, imfeM mm Mwm wWWSm?t W$mW0 . a 8 iw MftB| Ip Wmi Wm 0fM$$e ■ mm.
