Join us now as we record the highlights of our high school career. In September of 1955 we were freshmen in high school despite the fact that we were still in James A. Whitted Junior High School. We were proud to have the distinction of being the first graduating class in the newly-formed junior high school. ; Some of us were quite active that year. Velda White was elected president of the Student Council; Eric Michaux attended the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference in New York; Michael Tucker composed the music to the Whitted School Song, and Barbara Gladden and Catherine Burnett were majorettes with the Hillside Band, while Edward Bailey and Robert Beale marched with the group.Marjorie Lennon attained the highest scholastic average that year and several other students received awards in various subjects and activities. Finally September of 1956 arrived and we entered Hillside High School. Being only Sophomores made us feel somewhat inferior to the more sophisticated juniors and seniors, but we began early to prove that we could make ourselves outstanding. Hazel Ellison was first place winner in the I Speak for Democracy contest. Marjorie Lennon, Hazel Ellison, Travis Williams and Michael Tucker were installed as probationary members of the National Honor Society. Michael Tucker won first place in the Omega Talent Hunt. Many of our classmates participated in the annual Sophomore Talent Hour. Catherine Burnette was runner-up in the Miss Hillside contest. Several of us became affiliated with the various organizations of our school. Esther Morgan, Viola Tatum, Annie Conrad, Barbara Gladden, and Catherine Burnette joined the majorette squad. In scholarship and achievement, Michael Tucker won the Morehouse College Scholarship; ; Nathaniel Sutton and Querida McLendon won the 10th g rade National Honor Society Awards; John Lawrence won first place in the annual Science Fair, Biology Division, while Nathaniel Sutton placed second. In sports, Charles Brown emerged as state tennis champion, and other athletically inclined boys of our class made their debuts in football, basketball, track, tennis and baseball that year. On the night of the Junior-Senior Prom, Hazel Ellison, Marjorie Lennon, Barbara Fields, Jessie Giles, Patricia Williams, Dorothy Cobb and Janet Claggett served as attendants, During our junior year everyone seemed more ambitious than ever to indulge in some extra-curricular activities. Our chief adviser was Mrs. A. R. Cruse. Many of us became officers and members of the various activities of our school, Hazel Ellison, Marjorie Lennon, Travis Williams, Willene Jackson, and Jessie Giles became full members of the National Honor Society. Catherine Burnette was elected treasurer of the Student Council. Travis Williams and Johnny Morgan was elected president and vice-president respectively of the Junior Class. Marjorie Lennon, Yvonne Thorpe and Velda White were inducted into the Quill and Scroll Journalistic Society. Hattie Pratt was runner-up in the Spelling Bee at Hillside. Eleven juniors took a scholarship achieve - ment test that year. Charsie Herndon won first place and Beverly Burton won second place in the Chemistry Division of the Science Fair. Jacquelyn Thornton became president of the Dramatics Club. Arnold Samuel assumed duties as drum major of the marching band while Jesse Parker and Ronald Stewart became members of the Hillside Joymakers Band. Velda White, ''Miss Hillside » for 1957, was crowned at the annual Christmas Party. Highlighting that year was the Junior-Senior Prom where we enjoyed a wonderful evening under a Stairway to the Stars. This was the year—1958—when we finally became dignified seniors. Our chief adviser was Mrs. L.I. Riddick. Travis Williams, Johnny Morgan and Catherine Burnette were installed as president, vice-president and treasurer respectively of the Hillside Student Council. Hazel Ellison, Jessie Giles, Willene Jackson, and Travis Williams were installed as president, vice -president, secretary and treasurer respectively of the National Honor Society. Clifton Williams was elected president of the Dramatics Club; Ann Davis, president of the Debating Society; Esther Morgan, president of the Broadcaster's Club; Yvonne Thorpe, president of the Quill and Scroll Society; Catherine Harris, president of the New Homemakers of America; Barbara Gladden, president of the Future Nurses Club, and John Lawrence, Captain of the Safety Patrols. Ronald Stewart was chosen assistant band director. Marjorie Lennon was elected editor of the Chroncile with Velda White and Yvonne Thorpe as co-editors. Senior Class officers include: Johnny Morgan, president; Perry Lambeth, vice-president; Elaine Lambeth, recording secretary; Catherine Harris, corre- sponding secretary; Shirley Brown, treasurer; Yvonne Thorpe, reporter; Lavorne Pratt, Chairman of Welfare and Benevolence Committee, and Marjorie Lennon, parliamentarian, Several of our students took the Howard Examination this year. Hazel Ellison was runner-up in the Spelling Bee at Hillside. Elaine Lambeth, Hattie Pratt, Velda White and Charles Knox were installed into the National Honor Society. Catherine Burnette was ''Miss Homecoming with Beverly Burton and Esther Morgan as her attendants. Several girls participated in the ''Miss Trade Week contest where Beverly Burton was second place winner, and Esther Morgan third place winner. Winners of Varsity H football letters included Albert Huey, Johnny Woods, Harold Fowler, Robert Carrington, Alvin McCormick, James Wall, Theodore Leathers, Alonzo Cagle, and Charles Brown. James Fowler, Bobby Sims, Charles Brown, Albert Huey and Douglas Morgan were outstanding on the Homet Basketball Team. One proud distinction that we have is that of being the first class to publish a yearbook at Hillside. Eric Michaux and Hazel Ellison were chosen as editors of the HORNET. Willene Jackson, Mildred Williams, Elaine Lambeth, Velda White, John Edwards, Thomas Steele, Clifton Williams, Catherine Bumette, and Catherine Harris were other seniors who helped publish this book. We realize that success is only beginning for us and that we will have to work hard in order to reach the top, but we will continue to strive for we know that We build the ladder by which we climb. i HISTORIANS: Hazel Ellison, Jessie Giles, Marjorie Lennon 20
