Follow The Gleam A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS—FOLLOW THE GLEAM Is this message addressed to the Knights in the Days of Old? Is this message addressed to the members of the Hillside Chapter of the National Honor Society? No, this is a message to all of the students of Hillside. Follow the Gleam! The Gleam is aninternal light which leads into paths of honesty, loyalty, obedience, self-respect and respect for the rights of others. Though it cannot be seen by human eyes or touched by human hands, the gleam abides within each human heart; and it cannot be extinguished or removed from the center of life. ' Follow the Gleam! The Gleam led a backwoods rail-splitter to the Presidency of the United States. Itled a hopelessly stupid boy to discoverthe wonders of electricity. It ledMary McLeod Bethune to establish a school, which still bears her name; and it led a young Negro minister to Win a seething issue by means of passive resistance. Each, in his own way, follows the Gleam when he strives to reach the very highest realm of his inborn potentialities. You follow your gleam when you cooperate with your parents, neighbors, teachers, and schoolmates in their singular and combined efforts, to bring into realization your truest and most noble self. It is not expected that everyone shall earn a Phi Beta Kappa key, but there is no monopoly on respectable citizenship. No one is held responsible for any measured amount of God given ability, but everyone is held accountable for his response to the ability which he does have. Give your best to each cause as it arises. Learn each day's lessons as you go along, and you will gain wisdom to understand all that follows from any direction, whatsoever. Make your high school days the golden days of your happy youth. Look forward to looking back. Look back and be glad that you followed your Gleam. Wishing you a continuous and successful school career, I remain, Sincerely yours, Sees H. M. Holmes 13
