icine DEDICATED TO HAROLD MARION HOLMES To our dear principal, Mr. H. M. Holmes, We, the Senior class of 1959 dedicate this book. There are several reasons why we deem it necessary that this edition be in your honor. (1) When the name Hillside is thought of, who is the person most readily remembered as having aided the forward movement of this great institution? You are! (2) Who has givenso unselfishly to Hill- side? You have! (3) Who is the head of allschool activities? The answer is still the same! You... Mr. H. M. Holmes! Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, this educator received his basic instruction in the Greensboro Public Schools and the High Point Normal and Industrial Institute (now the William Penn High School). A Bachelor of Arts degree was conferred on him at Lincoln University, a Master of Arts degree at Columbia University, Further graduate work was done at the Universities of Michigan and Columbia. Mr. Holmes heldmany other positions before coming to Hillside. He was a teacher of math- ematics at Columbia Heights High School (now Atkins High School) in Winston-Salem, N.C. Our principal rendered his services also atthe following places: At Dudley HighSchool in Greens- boro, he taught chemistry and was the coach of football; principal of Orange County Training School (now Lincoln High School) in Chapel Hill, N.C, and Booker T. Washington High School in Reidsville, N.C, In 1948, this well-versed scholar accepted the principalship of Hillside High School of Durham, North Carolina, where he has labored untiringly for the betterment of the school, the city, the county and the state.
