M. Holmes, We, the Senior class of 1959 dedicate this book. There are several reasons why we deem it necessary that this edition be in your honor. (1) When the name Hillside is thought of, who is the person most readily remembered as having aided the forward movement of this great institution? You are! (2) Who has givenso unselfishly to Hill- side? You have! (3) Who is the head of allschool activities? The answer is still the same! You... Mr. H. M. Holmes! Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, this educator received his basic instruction in the Greensboro Public Schools and the High Point Normal and Industrial Institute (now the William Penn High School). A Bachelor of Arts degree was conferred on him at Lincoln University, a Master of Arts degree at Columbia University, Further graduate work was done at the Universities of Michigan and Columbia. Mr. Holmes heldmany other positions before coming to Hillside. He was a teacher of math- ematics at Columbia Heights High School (now Atkins High School) in Winston-Salem, N.C. Our principal rendered his services also atthe following places: At Dudley HighSchool in Greens- boro, he taught chemistry and was the coach of football; principal of Orange County Training School (now Lincoln High School) in Chapel Hill, N.C, and Booker T. Washington High School in Reidsville, N.C, In 1948, this well-versed scholar accepted the principalship of Hillside High School of Durham, North Carolina, where he has labored untiringly for the betterment of the school, the city, the county and the state. On this, your 10th anniversary of leadership at Hillside, we dedicate this, our first edition of THE HORNET, aan LAND ALL LLDMMLLAAELIA I ILI LS Gy ek cal Set is Follow The Gleam A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS—FOLLOW THE GLEAM Is this message addressed to the Knights in the Days of Old? Is this message addressed to the members of the Hillside Chapter of the National Honor Society? No, this is a message to all of the students of Hillside. Follow the Gleam! The Gleam is aninternal light which leads into paths of honesty, loyalty, obedience, self-respect and respect for the rights of others. Though it cannot be seen by human eyes or touched by human hands, the gleam abides within each human heart; and it cannot be extinguished or removed from the center of life. ' Follow the Gleam! The Gleam led a backwoods rail-splitter to the Presidency of the United States. Itled a hopelessly stupid boy to discoverthe wonders of electricity. It ledMary McLeod Bethune to establish a school, which still bears her name; and it led a young Negro minister to Win a seething issue by means of passive resistance. Each, in his own way, follows the Gleam when he strives to reach the very highest realm of his inborn potentialities. You follow your gleam when you cooperate with your parents, neighbors, teachers, and schoolmates in their singular and combined efforts, to bring into realization your truest and most noble self. It is not expected that everyone shall earn a Phi Beta Kappa key, but there is no monopoly on respectable citizenship. No one is held responsible for any measured amount of God given ability, but everyone is held accountable for his response to the ability which he does have. Give your best to each cause as it arises. Learn each day's lessons as you go along, and you will gain wisdom to understand all that follows from any direction, whatsoever. Make your high school days the golden days of your happy youth. Look forward to looking back. Look back and be glad that you followed your Gleam. Wishing you a continuous and successful school career, I remain, Sincerely yours, Sees H. M. Holmes 13 Gilt’ Adviser MRS, FLORICE J. Join us now as we record the highlights of our high school career. In September of 1955 we were freshmen in high school despite the fact that we were still in James A. Whitted Junior High School. We were proud to have the distinction of being the first graduating class in the newly-formed junior high school. ; Some of us were quite active that year. Velda White was elected president of the Student Council; Eric Michaux attended the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference in New York; Michael Tucker composed the music to the Whitted School Song, and Barbara Gladden and Catherine Burnett were majorettes with the Hillside Band, while Edward Bailey and Robert Beale marched with the group.Marjorie Lennon attained the highest scholastic average that year and several other students received awards in various subjects and activities. Finally September of 1956 arrived and we entered Hillside High School. Being only Sophomores made us feel somewhat inferior to the more sophisticated juniors and seniors, but we began early to prove that we could make ourselves outstanding. Hazel Ellison was first place winner in the I Speak for Democracy contest. Marjorie Lennon, Hazel Ellison, Travis Williams and Michael Tucker were installed as probationary members of the National Honor Society. Michael Tucker won first place in the Omega Talent Hunt. Many of our classmates participated in the annual Sophomore Talent Hour. Catherine Burnette was runner-up in the Miss Hillside contest. Several of us became affiliated with the various organizations of our school. Esther Morgan, Viola Tatum, Annie Conrad, Barbara Gladden, and Catherine Burnette joined the majorette squad. In scholarship and achievement, Michael Tucker won the Morehouse College Scholarship; ; Nathaniel Sutton and Querida McLendon won the 10th g rade National Honor Society Awards; John Lawrence won first place in the annual Science Fair, Biology Division, while Nathaniel Sutton placed second. In sports, Charles Brown emerged as state tennis champion, and other athletically inclined boys of our class made their debuts in football, basketball, track, tennis and baseball that year. On the night of the Junior-Senior Prom, Hazel Ellison, Marjorie Lennon, Barbara Fields, Jessie Giles, Patricia Williams, Dorothy Cobb and Janet Claggett served as attendants, During our junior year everyone seemed more ambitious than ever to indulge in some extra-curricular activities. Our chief adviser was Mrs. A. R. Cruse. Many of us became officers and members of the various activities of our school, Hazel Ellison, Marjorie Lennon, Travis Williams, Willene Jackson, and Jessie Giles became full members of the National Honor Society. Catherine Burnette was elected treasurer of the Student Council. Travis Williams and Johnny Morgan was elected president and vice-president respectively of the Junior Class. Marjorie Lennon, Yvonne Thorpe and Velda White were inducted into the Quill and Scroll Journalistic Society. Hattie Pratt was runner-up in the Spelling Bee at Hillside. Eleven juniors took a scholarship achieve - ment test that year. Charsie Herndon won first place and Beverly Burton won second place in the Chemistry Division of the Science Fair. Jacquelyn Thornton became president of the Dramatics Club. Arnold Samuel assumed duties as drum major of the marching band while Jesse Parker and Ronald Stewart became members of the Hillside Joymakers Band. Velda White, ''Miss Hillside for 1957, was crowned at the annual Christmas Party. Highlighting that year was the Junior-Senior Prom where we enjoyed a wonderful evening under a Stairway to the Stars. This was the year—1958—when we finally became dignified seniors. Our chief adviser was Mrs. L.I. Riddick. Travis Williams, Johnny Morgan and Catherine Burnette were installed as president, vice-president and treasurer respectively of the Hillside Student Council. Hazel Ellison, Jessie Giles, Willene Jackson, and Travis Williams were installed as president, vice -president, secretary and treasurer respectively of the National Honor Society. Clifton Williams was elected president of the Dramatics Club; Ann Davis, president of the Debating Society; Esther Morgan, president of the Broadcaster's Club; Yvonne Thorpe, president of the Quill and Scroll Society; Catherine Harris, president of the New Homemakers of America; Barbara Gladden, president of the Future Nurses Club, and John Lawrence, Captain of the Safety Patrols. Ronald Stewart was chosen assistant band director. Marjorie Lennon was elected editor of the Chroncile with Velda White and Yvonne Thorpe as co-editors. Senior Class officers include: Johnny Morgan, president; Perry Lambeth, vice-president; Elaine Lambeth, recording secretary; Catherine Harris, corre- sponding secretary; Shirley Brown, treasurer; Yvonne Thorpe, reporter; Lavorne Pratt, Chairman of Welfare and Benevolence Committee, and Marjorie Lennon, parliamentarian, Several of our students took the Howard Examination this year. Hazel Ellison was runner-up in the Spelling Bee at Hillside. Elaine Lambeth, Hattie Pratt, Velda White and Charles Knox were installed into the National Honor Society. Catherine Burnette was ''Miss Homecoming with Beverly Burton and Esther Morgan as her attendants. Several girls participated in the ''Miss Trade Week contest where Beverly Burton was second place winner, and Esther Morgan third place winner. Winners of Varsity H football letters included Albert Huey, Johnny Woods, Harold Fowler, Robert Carrington, Alvin McCormick, James Wall, Theodore Leathers, Alonzo Cagle, and Charles Brown. James Fowler, Bobby Sims, Charles Brown, Albert Huey and Douglas Morgan were outstanding on the Homet Basketball Team. One proud distinction that we have is that of being the first class to publish a yearbook at Hillside. Eric Michaux and Hazel Ellison were chosen as editors of the HORNET. Willene Jackson, Mildred Williams, Elaine Lambeth, Velda White, John Edwards, Thomas Steele, Clifton Williams, Catherine Bumette, and Catherine Harris were other seniors who helped publish this book. We realize that success is only beginning for us and that we will have to work hard in order to reach the top, but we will continue to strive for we know that We build the ladder by which we climb. i HISTORIANS: Hazel Ellison, Jessie Giles, Marjorie Lennon 20 Senos A boy who doesn't waste words... plans for future are undecided.
