Rodrigo Briones Benoit was the first to pass through the open door connecting Hillside and South America. He arrived from Chile early in january to spend ten weeks with his comet counterpart, Harvey Erdman. As part of the Open Door program, Rodrigo spent his short stay in America experiencing the routine of an American high school student. This average American had the opportunity to travel extensively to Washington, New York City and the greater Hillside area. This summer Harvey will travel to South America and take his place in their society. Like Rodrigo, Harvey will also be the guest of a South American family and have ample time to study the customs of the area and live a South American existence. 9

Interest and change are two words which have become synonymous with the attitudes and accomplishments of this school year. The interest of the student body was not confined by the walls of Hillside High, but manifested itself in programs like the Biafra Fund. Contributions were collected from the concerned students at basketball games and in the cafeteria. Donations from the S.G.A. and the township committee augmented the student contributions, producing a total of $210. which was sent to the war torn and starving nation. Changes in the band will be more apparent next football season, when their marching unit appears in its newly purchased uniforms. The interest in the uniform drive was not limited to only the band members who sold candy and arranged a concert but it also involved the P.T.A. and the ultimate 8-1 vote by the Board of Education in favor of changing the overworn uniforms. Now the antiquated uniforms that have darkened Woodfield Stadium for so many years will be no more.

... It Took A Few People Who Really Cared. Stemming from the United Community Concern, or the U.C.C. are many innovations which have proven beneficial to the people of Newark and that have produced rewarding experiences for the student volunteers. Since its beginning, the U.C.C. has operated a measle innoculation program, a health mobile, and a tutoring service. Devoted volunteers have unselfishly given their time in this effort to make life better for the less fortunate of Newark. Through the measle innoculation and health mobile programs, the U.C.C. has brought free medical assistance and has promoted better health within the ghetto. Tutoring is the service donated by most of the students. These dedicated volunteers have found a way to employ the knowledge acquired at H.H.S. Thanks to the awareness of these people, the students of Dayton Street School reap the benefits of a good background in their weak areas; Reading, Social Studies, Arithmetic, and Spelling. The U.C.C. programs will help all races realize that unsound prejudices can be eliminated through a deep sense of understanding and interaction. These students give a damn.
