JUNIORS SENIORS ACTIVITIES CLUBS SPORTS SPECIAL EVENTS BUSINESS 6 10 24 60 104 166 EPOCH HILLSIDE HIGH SCHOOL HILLSIDE, NEW JERSEY VOLUME XLII 1966 FOREWORD An air of mystery encompasses destiny”. Some of us seek to learn our destination in life through the wierd and wily powers of a fortune teller. The EPOCH shall allow you to ponder the crystal ball with our gentleman of the future. We will gaze into this crystal ball and remember each facet of the high school years behind us. What finer years to view, for the fortune teller must recall a bit of the past before he may predict the future — the destiny” of his subjects. Let us, then, search into the crystal ball and reminisce our four high school years; the work, the fun, and the dreams, which are so important in the shaping of our future . . . . our destiny”. We Dedicate the EPOCH MRS. JUNE OTTO, nurse and friend, came to Hillside High School in 1932. She served as a flight nurse in the Air Force during World War II, and received the Air Medal and five Bronze Stars. She was discharged with the rank of Captain. With foresight, determination, and ability, Mrs. Otto created a nursing department throughout the entire Hillside School System. Audiometer and Tele-binocular examinations, Tubercular tests, Salk Vaccine injections and countless other modern medical innovations were installed within her full and varied medical program. She served as chairman of our H.S. Safety Committee and has instructed in special First Aid classes. The first Future Nurses Club in New Jersey was organized under her direction. Pagp 4 Mrs. Otto takes pride in her colorful window box. But I do have a sore throat moans Cynthia Arches! Pace 5 A little study leads to better bidding. S.G.A. President. FACULTY As the cloudy haze begins to lift on our crystal ball, our fortune teller reminds us that the faculty of Hillside High School has helped each student to find his future. Insight and dedication of the administrators and instructors has helped every student of Hillside High to become a well rounded individual. New courses in journalism, scientific biology and scientific geometry were introduced into the curriculum to meet the needs and interests of our student body. Automation came to our school this year. Specialized machinery was used to assist in grading, computing attendance, and for scheduling purposes. The main office was also expanded thus creating a parent-conference room and a faculty work room. A different school calender along with a new daily time schedule was put into effect. Through the constant efforts of our administration and faculty, Hillside High School is continuing to progress and expand in order to prepare us for a successful future in a dynamic world. No longer were we self-conscious of each step we took, and no longer were we apprehensive of those older upperclassmen. As our confidence increased, so did our knowledge. The subjects of Biology and Geometry deepened our understanding and broadened our horizons. Steno was added to the list of the new languages we were to learn. Our dance, A Salute to Broadway,” became the highlight of the year. As Sophomores we felt we had become a part of Hillside High School’s happy family.” As we progress through our education, we shall progress further into maturity. Yet with it came challenges and experiences to be met. Extensive testing programs filled the spring, and we began to look beyond our high school years. We chuckled at the sight of classmates behind the wheel of a car, and we treasured the high school ring upon our fingers. For One Sweet Night” we met in Rome, and then our Junior year was over. We move on to create the future. Remember . . . Freshman Orientation. Strange faces occupied a vast school. Upperclassmen led us from elevator to pool to Atlantic City. Remember . . . Sophomore Dance. We struggled to hang the last of the streamers. Suddenly tragedy befell history— John F. Kennedy is dead”. Remember . . . Junior Ring Dance. Tissues, subtlely reincarnated flowers, surrounded Juniors proudly sporting their rings. Remember . . . Senior Year. We plodded from house to house selling our candy and then our ads. We awaited word from schools and employers of our choice. We created Friday caravans leading toward Bradley Beach. We celebrated together our Senior Prom, and we met together for perhaps the final time on Graduation Day.” Seniors—we will savour our high school memories forever, but now we are seniors no longer. We are greenhorn in the chaotic yet challenging world that stretches before us. We move on to create our destiny. Hillside High Alma Mater Hillside High our Alma Mater, Praises do we sing While our hearts with joyous exultation ring. And when the glowing embers die, Our hearts will beat for Hillside High, Alma Mater voices sing - joyously for thee. Joyously we gather now, In a true devotion, To our Alma Mater which we love so well. We ask a blessing from above, Bestowed upon the school we love, Alma Mater blessings on thy walls so firm and true. Faces which we love so well Shall slowly fade away. Moments of our youthful pleasure shall slowly wane. But time and storm shall never harm thee, School which shall live in every memory, Hillside High our Alma Mater — Brave and strong and true. Elliot Mandcrs, captain, and Mr. Michael Lcta, coach, led Hillside High’s team in practices focused upon speed and skill. TENNIS TEAM—Left to right: J. Bailey, S. Gelber, J. Hershkowitz, L. Along with these qualities must go hours of hard practice. 1 his year s bowling team was composed of such members. The team completed the season placing high in the Union County Tournament. The Junior Varsity team posted, also, a respectable record. Losing only one man through graduation, Hillside High’s bowling team looks forward for a successful year to come. Hillside’s basketball players battled to top teams with the aid of Mr. Roger Mazella, coach, and Michael Kramer, captain. Spirited action brought the basketball team to the close of a hard-fought season. I can jump higher than you, proves Wayne Positan. Come on Wayne, sink it. Michael Drew rises above the situation. Page 151 COMETS CRUSH Pace 152 WEEQUAHIC PRIDE penetrated the hearts of Hillside spectators gazing upon the Thanksgiving Day football field. Spirit stirred within each Hillside player while he fought to conquer a favored Weequahic team. Cheers and tears punctured the tense air as the Hillside boys brought victory home on Thanksgiving Day once more. Ha, ha fooled you. Bye, bye, Weequahic! Some day, thinks little Lisa. The outcome. Pace 153 Do blondes have more fun? Boy meets girl. Contemporary dance. California dreamin’. . . . Go, Alvin, go! Pack 154 DANCES Certain seasons and events cry for festivities. Hillside High School sees that they become a reality. Each class adds an affair to the social calendar, and the S.G.A. sponsors a Letterman’s and Valentine’s Day Dance. Seniors do not allow the Christmas season to pass the High School unnoticed, for they create the Christmas Dance. High school life extends well beyond the academic day for Hillside High School students. May I have this dance? A dance that will never lose popularity. And the band played on. Page 155 You put your left foot in, you put your left foot out. . . . TALENT SHOW Abilities of many Hillside students extend beyond the acedemic realm. Mr. Walter Behringer and Mrs. Judith Parsonnet, Advisors, co-ordinated the variety show giving talented students an opportunity to perform upon the stage. Songs, dances, music, and acrobatics spiced a very professional program. Narrator, Nancy Friedman, foreshadows events. The arrangements of the 4 Dimensions create a professional sound. Lynda Fern presents a popular tune. Somewhere over the rainbow,” dreams Carol Powell. Helaine Hausman gives her interpretation of Till There Was You.” I Wish You Love sings Linda Sabba. Barbara Boho displays perfected gymnastic abilities. Marjorie Rosenberg introduces opera to the annual Talent Show. S.G.A. dancers portray the ska. Ballet is a complex art that Barbara Boho has mastered. Accompanyist, Janet Petricelli, also displays her talents as a solo pianist. Marsha Fisch brings folk music to the stage of Hillside High. Senior Play The cast. Challenge touched the Senior cast of The Mouse That Roared as they attempted to convey the witty satire to on-lookers. Judi Scavron, student director, and Mrs. Joan Maher, advisor, found the auditorium to be another home during weeks of intense rehearsal. The Mouse That Roared served as more than a fund raising project, for the large cast of Seniors added many fond experiences to high school memories. But that’s an add for our wine! Junior Ring Dance The traditional walk through the ring. That’s one way to keep him quiet. Pace 161 Has anyone seen that contact lens? Senior Faculty Game Basketball entered hillside’s gym, but it wasn’t basketball season. One glance at the teams hinted at more irregular circumstances, for a homely group of girls ran out upon the court. Why, of course, it was the faculty disguised and prepared to challenge seniors in a tough game of ball. Competition did not end here, for lady faculty members cheered for their men while senior cheerleaders supported the senior boys. Faculty topped the students, but the victory was hard to achieve. 38 - 24 - 38? Pace 162 Mr. Bianchi daintily scores for Faculty.
