Hillside High Hillside, New School Jersey 1Q64 Volume XL ACCENT ON Foreword SINCE YOUTH IS ALL FOR GLADNESS Since Youth is all for gladness, And dreams and rainbow-skies, For rapture and moon-madness, Why are Youth's eyes so wise? Since Youth is all for vaunting Adventures, scorning fears— Is there not something haunting In Youth’s incongruous tears? 0 Youth must bleed and measure The days and span the sea— But Age will keep for pleasure What Youth thought misery. GLENN WARD DRESBACH Pace 3 O ' HlflOA We ‘Dedicate THIS EPOCH AND OUR HOPE OF PEACE To President John Fitzgerald Kennedy Disbelief and shock were the first emotions felt by the throngs who had heard the news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. A deep sense of personal grief, rare to most of us, replaced the initial shock. The students of Hillside High School with sincerest admiration and loyalty to a great and revered President of the United States of America express the heart-felt desire to forge into the “New Frontier” which he so fervently advocated with his power, will, and prayer. President John F. Kennedy devoted his life to those beliefs which he so ardently held. The people who had elected John F. Kennedy to the highest office in the land and the youth who have found him a great inspiration of patriotism and leadership are now called upon to defend those liberties for which President John F. Kennedy fought, to finish the legislative task he began, and to strive to reach those goals of advancement which he aimed for so magnificently. We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans—horn in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a cold and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage—and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today. President John 7. Kennedy’s Inaugural Address, January 21, 1961. “ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU—ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY. Pace 4 PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY WELCOME Dr. Krumbiegel’s warm and understanding smile greets an apprehensive pupil. . . And if you buy fifty Hillside beanies,” says R. Ferrigno to Dr. Krumbiegel, “you will receive one absolutely free. Pace 6 A now familiar face in the halls of Hillside High is Dr. Walter O. Krumbiegel. He became our principal upon the retirement of Mr. Ruhl Custer, in the spring of 1963. Dr. Krumbiegel has had many years of experience in the Hillside school system. He was graduated from the Central Grammar School, which is now called A. P. Morris School. He graduated from Lebanon Valley College, Lafayette College, and New York LIniversity where he received his doctorate. For a period of eleven years, Dr. Krumbiegel taught English at Hillside High. Relinquishing his position as head of the English Department, he accepted the post of principal of Hillside Avenue School, a position which he held for seventeen years. He has received such awards as the B’nai B'rith Americanism Award and the Citation for Meritorious Service. Among Dr. Krumbiegel’s hobbies are sailing, skiing, woodworking, photography, and Hillside High School. But Hillside High is even more than a hobby, it is his second home. 'If all the year were playing holiday, to sport would be as tedious as to work. Garb, S.G.A. secretary, reports another good week of S.G.A. events. K. Arlein smiles as he contemplates his future at Po Dunk U. Pace 11 “Touchdown!” shouts the crowd as the Comets take the lead over Springfield. “Oh! If only I could read music!” exclaims C. Love. D. Covelcski performs “wonders” in chemistry for fellow students. “All good things must come to an end,” is the chant of Hillside High School students as they make their way home. Pace 12 “But Van,” says D. Kriegman, “I always thought I took a smaller size. “In reference to my campaign promise of co-ed gym classes,” states R. Ferrigno, president of the S.G.A., “it just can’t be done.” If only detention hall was really like this! DEVOTED AND UNDERSTANDING FACULTY The students of Hillside High School attribute a successful year to the efficiency and diligence of their teachers. Devotion, enthusiasm, and understanding characterize the entire staff in academic instruction and extra-curricular supervision. Ability to relate information and arouse interest and participation mark a laudable contribution to its youth. Broader knowledge, original ideas, and an awareness of creativity and culture are derived from the efforts of the faculty. These qualities are exemplary of a valuable individual and essential for a better world. Pace 14 Dr. Wayne T. Branom Superintendent of Schools Dr. W. WALTER O. KRUMBIEGEL Rarely has a newcomer captured the hearts of the student body of Hillside High as has Dr. Walter O. Krumbiegel, our new principal. It all started on the first day of school when Dr. Krumbiegel stood up before the student body and welcomed us back to school. Since then, he has visited most of the classes, reliving the days when he himself taught English right here at Hillside High. Dr. Krumbiegel has started a new epoch at Hillside High School. Dr. Walter O. Krumbiegel Principal Dr. Krumbiegel confers with Dr. Branom via telephone. LEADERS OF YOUTH MR. Suddenly 1 quickened my pace, remembering that if I were late to class, 1 would be kept after school. Bewildered and frightened, 1 scurried from room to room searching for a familiar face to help me find my bearing. My only consolation was that I was not alone; many other freshmen were also experiencing the same difficulties. Weeks passed and I found myself in the same crowded corridor looking into the same faces which had so frightened me before. By this time, however, I was well acquainted with my new surroundings and not in the least bewildered or panicky. The mystery of locating classes had vanished, and I had now adjusted to the shorter lunch periods and more homework. Contrary to my first impression, I found that I actually enjoyed high school. This experience was but another progression in my growth and development. Pace 26 %y salad days, when J was green in judgment.'' SHAKESPEARE Page 27 L. Abel S. Adclman R. Alsieux C. Appel S. It was a year of battles with theorems, anatomy, and Caesar; and a period brimming with new experiences. It was a time of unperceived challenges; challenges to the fundamental ideals I had created, as well as to my intelligence. This year brought changes in my values and in my pleasures, changes that are necessities of a maturing youth. My sophomore year was one in which I met and mingled with different types of people, and one in which I gained, once more, the priceless gift of knowledge. Within this period I have been witness to history in the making, and although I leave behind this year, my memories of the events which have encompassed this period shall never pass from my mind. This time was but a great step on my stairway to a successful future. Pace 36 S. Abrams D. A it ken M. Aleshnick J. Alper C. Alscika S. Alsicux J. Altschulc D. Ambrose E. Amoresano M. Aracich C. After two years of sitting on the floor of the boys’ gym during pep rallies or in the last row of the auditorium during the assembly programs, I am finally an upperclassman. I now wear my H.H.S. ring which I received at the Junior Ring Dance with great pride. Walking down the hall with confidence, I feel that I have mastered dictation, have solved numerous unsolved problems in mathematics, and have learned many new techniques in electric shop. The enthusiasm builds up as I take numerous achievement tests which will determine my ultimate destiny in life. Fruchterman find their PSAT scores very amusing as Mrs. Black shows them their folders. SENIOR SOVEREIGNTY I REMEMBER IT WELL Pace 62 It began on a day in the month of September, I'm sure you must certainly all remember. We were young and excited, and just beginning To face the unknown, inning by inning. Weeding through a course of math, Clearing the way, making our path. Cooking and sewing became an art; Auto shop was great from the start. We met new friends, trying our best To secure a sound and lasting nest. At Pal we danced till we could stand no more, Oh how that music seemed to roar! As Sophs we were big and bad you know, My how the summer did make us grow. Biology class was liked by all While steno taught us to be on the ball. Junior year was wild and spinning, Basketball games, our team was winning. Atlantic City was the height, The Comets fought with all their might. The Ring Dance was a huge success, A night of splendor and nothing less. We danced as the Regionals did sing, Each queen escorted by her king. Summer days were short and sweet, Stanley Terrace was the street. Your friends you’d find at Bradley Beach, Fun and laughs within your reach. The big shots seen are Seniors of course. Romances brewing through every source, The Prom, the Play, love that school! Hillside High taught us the rule. Well, my friends, the time is near For you and me to step to the rear. Alma Mater we shall sing, Tears of love our eyes will bring. We’ll plan to meet, we know not where. If God is willing, we’ll be there. A prayer we’ll say for every mate For a happy, prosperous and healthy fate. Page 63 T. T. Some people possess one quality, and other students possess many of these qualities. Studies are representative of the student, and the well rounded student is a representative of scholarship, leadership and sportsmanship. At first, football was the key to stardom with the famous gridiron taking the sportlight.” Before the football, soccer and cross country spirit had vanished, basketball and wrestling “muscled in.” In the spring, the sportlight shifted once more to the outdoors where track and baseball awaited speedy hopefuls. Throughout the year, students participated in various clubs in which they were interested. How many of you attended those long S.G.A. meetings or spent long hours at night writing your Hiller and £pocb articles? Remember that flowing music from the far corner of the first floor, and do you recall those hours of specialized training for your future profession? Diligence was the key to accomplishment. These activities required a development of skills and school spirit. After a year of hard work in conjunction with enjoyment, we have developed into more mature individuals. Pace 100 When duty whispers low, thou must. Jhe youth replies, J can. —RALPH WALDO EMERSON Page 101 S.G.A. The S.G.A., the Students’ General Association, is the voice of the student body. Students are given the opportunity to manage their own school affairs. To provide for equal representation of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, each homeroom selects a person to act as a delegate. A further service of this organization is the activity ticket. The cost is nine dollars. The ticket serves as admission to all school events and enables the member to receive the Epoch and Hiller. Reviewing the year, he happily reported that there were fine musical performances which ranged from the symphonic to the popular contemporary versions. The Spring Concert was again the highlight performance, displaying the diligence and ability of the students who participated in the 1 lillside High School Orchestra. The Symphonic Band under the direction of Mr. M. Buglio takes “five” from the long hours of rehearsal in the music room. When you hear the rhythm-filled beat of a drum, accompanied by the victorious strains of a march, you know it’s the Hillside High School Band, under the direction of Mr. M. Buglio. The highlight of the year is the Thanksgiving Game when the skills of the band members are displayed in the specially prepared routines. During the remainder of the year the music room is the workshop for the Symphonic Band. Their efforts are shown in their brilliant performances at assemblies and the annual Spring Concert.
