One of our greatest assets is the “H.H.S spirit” we have acquired through the years. Much of this feeling has grown from our association with our school’s administrative leaders, for whom guidance has been not only a job, but a sincere, personal concern and interest. The members of the senior class wish to thank Mr. Custer, especially, for the great benefits he has made possible for them. During their four years at Hillside, he has, in spite of his numerous duties, found the time to be an ever ready friend and adviser. MR. W. STACEY DUNHAM Vice-Principal MR. RUHL L. Carmen “Chubby” Ferrigno. Rounding out the coaching staff were John Kulikowski, Bill Todt, and Willis Swales. The team was up against an extremely tough schedule this year. The Comets got off to a slow start, losing to Springfield Regional, 12-0. Terrific competition ensued, resulting in victory for the highly-favored Kearny crew, 7-0, the powerful Woodbridge gridders, 38-13, and the Morristown Colonials, in a hard fought game, 9-7. Success came to the Maroon and Gray when it romped over Cranford, 18-0. On the next Saturday, a big, fast Belleville team invaded Woodfield Stadium and won, 26-0. The much improved Comets took the measure of a rugged Irvington squad, 6-0. Then, November 21, Hillside took on a highly-favored Linden club and, playing tremendous ball, tied them, 7-7. The season did not finish on the high-note it almost invariably does on Thanksgiving Day; the Weequahic Indians won by a count of 24-6. This year marked the twentieth anniversary of football at Hillside, and although it was not a very successful year for the Comets on a win and lose basis, it was successful in that the boys played with tremendous courage and spirit. Senior members of the Hillside line were such standouts as Gary Schuckman, George D’Amiano, Bob Bornstein, Harvey Goodstein, Henry Kodila, George Fresco, Joe Lazerwitz, and Wayne Bieg. Mike Weinstock held the end slot, while the Comet backfield was sparked by Rog Keehn, A1 Goldberg, and Jim Lavook. SENIOR VARSITY, First Row.R. Keehn, G.Fresco, H. Kodila, G. Schuckman, J. Lavook, B. It finances, plans, and supervises all events. A notable achievement of the 1953-1954 S.G.A. was this year’s annual magazine drive, a campaign to raise money for dances, national charities, dues, and miscellaneous expenses. It proved to be a huge success, exceeding all previous years by bringing in over $6,500. There were several other outstanding accomplishments. This year, the S.G.A. undertook the responsibility of turning out a handbook, which will serve as a guide to all the activities of Hillside High School. The printing of the menus of lunches which are served in the cafeteria was a new S.G.A. project. This year’s administration financed and directed the annual S.G.A. Extra Dance and the sale of chrysanthemums for the Thanksgiving Day game. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY VARSITY “H’ CLUB Mr. T. Silver’s Varsity “H” Club meets every Wednesday during the activity period. During this time, the preceding game is discussed. A Hillside High letter is the membership card for this club. The National Honor Society consists of students chosen by the faculty for their high scholastic records and school spirit. One project undertaken by this group was “A Night With the Colleges,” a program designed to aid in the student’s choice of a college. Mrs. Annamae Rudolph is the faculty adviser. NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE The Hillside Chapter of the National Forensic League participates in debates and forums with other schools. Its members are admitted into the club on a competitive basis, and are taught speech, composition, and poise while competing for the honor of Hillside High. Mr. G. Langstaff directs this organization. THE FORENSIC CLUB The Forensic Club is mainly composed of inexperienced students interested in bettering their public speaking abilities. Many contests are entered by students selected to represent Hillside during the year throughout the state. Weekly activity meetings provide practice and competition in this work under the guidance of Mr. B. Schalkoff. BANKERS The Bankers, chosen by their homeroom teachers, are entrusted with the savings of their fellow students. Each Wednesday, the money is collected by these bankers, brought to the office, and then deposited in the bank. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club, under the direction of Miss S. Trachtenberg, provides inspiration for Spanish students. Among its activities are student reports on Spain and Mexico, Spanish games, and the learning of Spanish songs and dances. Castanet lessons were taught at the beginning of the year. PUBLICITY CLUB To publicize the school’s social, financial, and athletic programs is the main function of the Publicity Club. Poster, loudspeaker, and blackboard committees help to encourage attendance at school events. With their adviser, Mr. Joseph Silver, club members meet to plan various ways of publicizing future activities. ADVANCED MATHEMATICS CLUB The members of the Advanced Mathematics Club are primarily concerned with studying topics in mathematics which are not regular classwork. The main emphasis is on analytic geometry and calculus. Members of this club hope to be able to enter college with a broader background in mathematics. Mr. W. Koellner is the adviser.
