The annual senior play was the first Q 34 ,, ,,, J, 'if project for the council, which sold tickets because the profits from the show Went toward financing the Senior Prom. Additional money came from the Senior-Faculty basketball game, half the receipts Went into the treasury. Sponsorship of the annual SGA. Christmas Dance gave the council practice for its big project, the Senior Prom. Using as its main source of money the earnings of the play and game, the council featured the exclusive, gala affair on the last day of May. The Senior Prom is the only event on the high school calendar that is open only to seniors and their guests. Before the S, G. A. was founded, .students who wished to engage in extra- curricular activities had to pay for each activity separately. Yearbooks were sold separately to anyone who wanted to buy one. Even the school paper had to be purchased. Nearly all clubs charged dues. The chief advantages of the S. G. A. are ill that you can participate in all of the activi- ties for a small amount of money and C25 that more activities can be financed through such a central organization. ln order to emphasize the actual savings enjoyed by members, the following list has been drawn up to show how much it would actually cost to attend all of the activities: 3 Home Football Games Q50c . .... Leading this scrappy ball club to a record of 4 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties were lack lrwin, Roland Massimino, loe Savittere, Dan Sinnott, Tony Sadler, Ed Nulton, and Steve Dobossy. These boys made up the hard charge ing Comet forward wall. Coach Red Weiner and his two com- petent assistants Mr. Kulikowski and Mr. Fer- rigino, came up with a superlative backfield headed by its crashing fullback Dick Kelly. The half back slots were filled efficiently by hard hitting Ronnie Rosen, and small but deceptive Ray lazikoff, The quarter back position was filled by Marv Fishman. Rounding out the team were Fred Dworkin, Carmen Coppola, Louis Galisewski, Warren Edelman, Dave Goldfinger, Andy Kenopensky, loe Siegel and loe Visotski. Those especially interested and talented in dramatics have labored until the signal honor has been bestowed on them-that of membership in the National Thespian Society. Troupe No. 887 of Hillside High School is a member of the National Thespian organization and it has steadily grown in membership and activity until it is, today, one of the most prominent groups in the school. Under the leadership of its president, Ierome Max, and its advisor, Miss Olive Rapp, the Thespians supervised all school dramatic projects. Annually the club sponsors two major productions: one, in fall, the Senior Play, the other, a spring dramatic production. The latter consists of one full length play or several shorter plays. The students take part in, and assist in directing these productions under the supervision of the sponsor. Acting is not stressed alone, but also stage managing, direction, make-up and costuming. The organization thus produces not only fine actors and actresses, but also a good production staff. On the evenings of November 30 and December l, l95l, the curtain rose and fell on the Seniors' successful attempt to bring Broadway to Hillside. An anxious audience awaited to see the final outcome of Ram- shackle Inn. This three-act mystery farce found a combination of murder and romance completely to the students' liking. On March 21, 1952, the society ven- tured into the field of three-act suspense drama. lts production of l'Night Must Fall was an outstanding event in the troupe's history. A cast composed of students from all four high school classes, Thespians and non-Thespians, did a superb job in bringing Emlyn Williams' drama to Hillside's stage. ln the field of regular high school assembly programs, the society presented one of its semi-annual initiations of new members before the student body, and an original play, Ring'er. The play was greeted with great success and was used by the S. G. A. in cooperation with the Thes- pians, as part of their exchange assembly programs. Homecoming was a play pre- sented by our sponsor through the Dramatic and Speech classes. The Thespian club has endeavored to elicit interest in its work by rewarding those talented students who are deserving and by furthering the development of the dramatic art itself, so that the club not only trains its members, but also betters the productions of the school. ln these ways Thespians play their part in cultural development of 1 r ? 3 1 4 51 f L V it f z NATIUNAL HUNUR SUCIETY The National Honor Society is the only honorary group in Hillside High School. lts membership consists oi a tew juniors and seniors who are chosen because oi their leadership, service, character, and scholarship. This group helps supervise the noon- time study hall, collects and sends records to the service men in Tilton Hospital, and participates in the National Honor Scholarship plan, t0lK DANCE The Dance Club otters an oppor- tunity to learn fundamental steps in each ot the ditterent types ot dances- square, tap, modern, and social. The steps are thenfused in creative activity to combine rhythmically with the popu- lar records. The musical expressions and responses are very diiterent and have proved to be interesting and stimulating to all the girls. The Faculty Advisor is Miss Simonet. W ii 5 i' 2: , - El0THING ElUB The Clothing Club is designed primarily tor girls that take sewing who need extra time to finish their projects. Girls with an intense interest who wish to advance their knowledge may, with the instructors permission, become members also. Since the club is very informal, the instructor has an opportunity to really know the twenty-five girls who enroll. Miss Alice Barden is the advisor. Rlflf ClUB The Rifle Club under the direc- tion of Mr. William Koellner is taught marksmanship, sportsmanship and the proper 'handling of firearms. The club is affiliated with the National Rifle Association, and fires in a nationwide match sponsored by this association. The club is now considered the top in New Iersey. During the season, which ex- tends from September to Tune, the boys hold matches with various schools in the locality. ll?-1 I' t STAMP ClUB This year the Stamp Club has taken part in the various national and local philatelic conventions and exhibi- tions. Several of its members partici- pate in nationwide organized phil- ately. ln order to increase the interest and knowledge its members get from stamp collecting, the club has a weekly program of trading, contests, auctions, and serious philatelic discussions. The Stamp Club has endeavored to keep the world's most popular hobby the Hobby of Kids and Kings. The advisor is Mr. Sickles. MARIUNEITE ClUB The Marionette Club has func- tioned With the purpose of learning how to make string puppets, hand puppets and shadow puppets. Under the supervision of Mrs. Elaine Cohn, its five members have made several puppets during the course of the year, and have learned how to manipulate them. The puppets have been made out of materials such as wood, paper and cloth. A portable stage has also been built by the club with the purpose of producing puppet plays for the student body. HLY The Hillside Hi-Y Club is com- posed of young Christian boys. Striving to help the school and the community, the Hi-Y has many activities during the school year. Taking care of the score- board at football games, selling book covers, and replacing homeroom num- bers above each door, are among their many duties. The clubs officers of the l95l-52 school year were Ralph Trim- mer, President, Richard Cfrawinger, Vice-President, Richard Rogers, Secre- tary, Steve Dobessy, Treasurer, and David Doremus, Chaplain. Mr. Sowers is the advisor. A.l.A. The A Z A is an organization for young men sponsored by B'nai B'rith. A program of cultral, religious, inter- faith community service with social and athletic activities, as well as service to the school, is planned by the members and Mr. Gottlieb, their advisor, to en- courage participation in the responsi- bilities of democratic living.
