and Hillside High School f « • DR. WAYNE T. BRANOM lx) si OsudwaJtsi... Dr. Branom has been our Supervising Principal for the past five years. Under his leadership our schools have made outstanding progress. Our courses of study have been revised and made more practical. Guidance facilities have been provided for students in both high and elementary schools. The instruction and activities provided, are improved and expanded. For his vision and willingness to work untiringly for the continued progress of our schools, and his courage to inform the community of its real educational needs, we respectfully dedicate this book to Dr. Branom. The day approached when we knew we must go, Our heads were high and our hearts were low. We knew we must leave the friends we'd kept. Memories oI classes, through which we'd slept. But thoughts went back to twelve years past, When kindergarten came at last. And then the climb through the elementaries. When all we got were A's and B's. At last our seventh grade graduation, (Remember that year's infatuation?) Then to the ]r. High, and on our way, A soda at Phil's to complete the day. In mornings we boarded the liner for heaven; Will we ever forget the number seven? Sliced egg sandwiches our mothers made, On top of our books were neatly laid. But come lunch at eleven-thirty, Those sandwiches didn't look so purty. Sliced egg was now squashed or nicely mashed— To the store for lunch, we quickly dashed. After lunch came a Coe-ments meeting, (As eighth graders we received a polite greeting). By the end of one month, anyone could guess That we were members of the Jr. High PRESS. The first cheering squad we ever had. When aching muscles were a feminine fad. Another first came, for those pig-skin go-getters, The Jr. High team got blue and white letters. Then the launching of our high school career. Our foreign language Freshman year. E pluribus unum was spoken by some, While French girls said, Cherchez les hommes. Algebra, Science and English, too, Kept us busy a whole year through. Then came the climax, (after a year chasing Tom), He finally asked you to the Freshman Prom. What a glorious time we all had there, The smell of roses in the air. With this dance we bid farewell To a school and faculty we thought were swell. After this we journeyed by, A few blocks down, to the Senior High. Another bus then entered our fate, A lovely morning ride on the famous forty-eight. We were shoved off the bus, and each looked a sight. Then we prepared for that third floor hike. The school was beautiful, we all agreed, But why not escalators, to strengthen the knees? Lessons were harder, homework increased. 36 Books grew heavier and tests never ceased. When the chimes sounded we would stop and listen To Mr. Custer's voice, on the loud speaker system. Our Sophomore year brought Biology, Shorthand II and World History. The long sports year started its parade, Again Weequahic was left in the shade. We joined the Hiller, which rated grade A, In it was published what the students had to say. Well never lorgel the April Fool Editions, Or articles on Halloween superstitions. The Sophomore play and Variety Shbw, We'll never lorget these 'ere we go. Our first votes lor the S. G. A., A wonderlul idea that's here to stay. The Maximum with Max was the winning campaign, And good rights for the students was his aim. Then our junior year, Physics and the like, (How some sort of pressure kept the water from the dike.) The Sadie Hawkins Day dance, something new, And the Junior Prom, a big hit, too. Our football band was privileged to play At Yankee Stddium on Columbus Day. Girl Crazy brought a note of variety, And awaited by all with much anxiety. Moving-up day came, and Seniors we were made, Hoping that in the year to follow, we would make the grade. But then the end of it all drew near, For everything was a last time in our Senior year. Chem tests, lab books and chemical changes, (Watching lor all sorts of possible dangers.) The Thanksgiving game, our Senior play, After watching it Our Hearts were Young and Gay. The Junior-Senior Dance, and then notable prizes Were given at moving-up exercises. Of course, the Prom, lor Seniors only, Moonlight and Roses and I Love you Only. And finally in June, our graduation, We then had reached one destination. That wonderful night in the middle of Spring, When strains of the graduation march in our ears did ring. Yes, our heads were high, but our hearts were low, When from H. H. S. we knew we must go. Remembering all our fun and pleasures, Memories which we'll always treasure. We leave to '50 and '51, Thoughts of us in years to come. Memories of us in years gone by, The '49 Class of Hillside High. tfi PUov - I MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Ray Alexander — Richard Connington Arlene Krassner — Alice Zerweck U)JwA MOST VERSATILE Ray Alexander — Robert Diamond Arlene Krassner — Gloria Kurtz CUTEST Joe Ambrose — Buddy Glynn Arlene Cohen — Blanche McKay MOST POPULAR Joe Ambrose — Bob Lilien Arlene Cohen — Dolores Gerlach MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Ray Alexander — Ronald Schachman Arlene Krassner — Blanche McKay BEST DRESSED Bob M. J’ooiball Even though the Comet gridsters got off on the wrong foot, the astute coaching of A1 Red Weiner, Carmen Chubby” Ferrigno, and Stan Stash Wnek brought the team out of its early-season doldrums, and presented Hillside with another outstanding football aggregation. Of the three early season defeats, the Hillers have nothing to be ashamed of. Jefferson High School had played exceptionally well and battled Central before losing by a touchdown. The Orange Tornadoes, who lost their season opener to Montclair, proceeded to wallop all opposition. The Comets were one of the few teams that gave the Tornadoes a stern test before bowing in the final stages of the game. In that contest, the Comets' chances of winning were greatly reduced by injuries midway through the game. The Westside Rough Riders, the third team to beat Hillside, had lost but Coach Albert (Red) Weiner two games: their opener to powerful East Orange, and a one-touchdown loss to the newly crowned Newark city champ, Central. Following this very shaky start Hillside proceeded to trounce Cranford’s squad, and then battle a tough Belleville group to a one-touchdown win. The next Saturday, the Comets played lion tamers as they trounced the Linden Tigers. Following this success, the Hillers won their fourth straight game by crushing their traditional rival, Irvington. The boys won the Irvington game for Red Weiner and Stash Wnek. Both are three-letter men from Irvington High. The win over Weequahic was the culminating point of a season which ended successfully. There was the usual display of good sportsmanship shown by both teams. This game might be considered part payment for the Hillside loss in 1935 when Chubby Ferrigno played for the Comets. BcuJisdbali Coach Joe Silver, snapping back from a mediocre 1947-48 basketball season, combined almost the same talent to win six games in a row, without dropping any. Then the boys took their well deserved Christmas recess. They started the New Year on the wrong foot, losing three out of their first four encounters. Silver soon got his boys back in step, however, and they went on to rack up the best record any Hillside basketball team had ever had, fifteen wins against four defeats. The Comets were second seeded in the Union County Tournament, and almost provided its only upset in a thrilling heartbreaker with Thomas Jefferson in the finals, and reached the finals in the State Tournament. Coach Silver was aided in his almost Herculean task by his assistant and Jay Vee coach John Duthie. Many of the boys who played on Duthie’s junior group were moved up to the varsity squad, and they were of valuable assistance in the Comets' stretch drive. SCHEDULE December 3 ... It contains two news pages, including reports on all school functions, a feature page consisting of editorials and humorous features, and the sport page, with accurate coverage of all contests and views on school athletic functions. Before the paper goes to press, the headline and make-up staff composes the general arrangement of the pages, while the copy staff types all articles to be sent to the printer. Helping to support the HILLER financially are the advertising staff and the business staff. The entire staff is headed by the editor-in-chief and his assistant, and their advisor, the tireless Mrs. Callander. The staff includes approximately thirty-five students who have produced a publication of which we can be proud. The HILLER has received the highest possible ratings from the National Scholastic Press Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and is a member of the Quill and Scroll Society.
