% THE SENIOR CLASS HILLSIDE HIliH SCHOOL HILLSIDE NEW JERSEY (pAMsmJtA . . . Hi: {Util Iffll 9n a (Banmh fl suvi . . . am 4 HILLSIDE HICK KUHL CUSTER OuA (pAuvdpal With the gratitude that accompanies the deepest admiration, we, the class of 1948, dedicate this volume of the Epoch to our principal, Mr. Ruhl L. Custer. As we first entered the halls of Hillside High in 1945, Mr. Custer was also a newcomer to our school. We are the first graduating class which he has guided for three full years in this school. He has tried to develop our characters as well as our minds. He has been a friend to us—always there to help as the need arose. The successes of this eventful year at Hillside High were made possible largely through the endeavors of Dr. Wayne T. Branom, supervising principal; Mr. Ruhl L. Custer, principal, and Mr. Stacey Dunham, vice-principal. Aiding these men were Mrs. George Elliott, Mrs. Harlow Curtis, and Miss Frieda Weber—all graduates of Hillside High. MR. W. STACEY DUNHAM MRS. GEORGE ELLIOTT MISS FRIEDA WEBER MRS. But in the path we mortals tread, Got some few, trifling steps ahead And nearer to the end. So that you, too, once past the bend, Shall meet again, as face to face, this friend You fancy dead. Push gaily on, strong heart! the while You travel forward mile by mile, He loiters with a backward smile Till you can overtake. And strains his eyes to search his wake, Or whistling as he sees you through the brake. Waits on a stile. This was predicted an “off” year for the local eleven, since graduation had taken all but two first stringers from the Comet ranks. Head Coach A1 Weiner, assisted by Carmen Ferrigno and Frank Hill, prepared to put together this “green” squa'd. For the first game of the season the Hillers traveled to Elizabeth to battle with a highly favored Jefferson team. “It was luck”, many said when the scrappy Comets held off Jeff to a tie. But when Kearny visited Hillside the following week to lose a hard fought contest, people began to take notice. The Maroon and Grey lost the next two contests to two powerful teams, Orange and West Side. Yet the Hillsiders invaded Cranford the next Saturday and whipped the Blue and Gold. Playing host to Belleville the following week, in perhaps the most exciting game of the season, the Hillers again triumphed. On Armistice Day, the Comets downed Linden in revenge for last year’s defeat. On the march again, Hillside visited Irvington the next week, and overcame the Camptowner’s first half lead to upset them. In the traditional Turkey Day Tilt, the Maroon and Grey thoroughly doused the Wee-quahic Indians before a capacity crowd at Woodfield Stadium. Although the team racked up more Col-liton points than any other Group Three school in the state, Hillside shared the Group III Title with Springfield and West-field. Vhw 1. It would read like a Who's Who of Hillside. At Shanty Shack one night we started off with the hope of getting enough contributions for a sixteenth page ad. We asked for pennies—but they swamped us. We got nickels,'dimes, and in two cases even quarters. Everybody helped—-freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and visitors. Each contributor became a booster and the thing grew until this half page ad was the result. The gang was swell. Thanks a lot, kids, and may the same spirit continue with you at Shanty Shack always.
