Audrey B. Campbell Mary A. Cosgrove I 1 944 is regarded as a year of destiny for our great nation. That does not mean this is a year of fate or fortune. Rather it means that 1944 should be a favorable year—one of momentous events for our arms; of victories that no power on earth will be able to deny. Since 1944 is also a memorable date in your educational experience, I hope it will be a year of favorable destiny for you, a year when you clearly realize that within yourselves there lies latent power to move the world toward nobler and more fruitful ends than past generations have been able to attain. I regard it a distinct privilege to know so many fine young people as those who pass through the school. You are a part the thousands who have been an inspiration to the teachers of Hillside High School. I wish you might be with us longer, but prolonged presence would not best serve your interests. It is time to go in order that you may undertake more important activities. My best wishes will follow you always. Sincerely yours, WILBUR H. COX, Principal WILBUR H. COX Principal W. Stacey Dunham Vera Edgar Nettie C. Estabrook Margaret M. Gaylord Lillian J. Gillies 1944 FACULTY

DEDICATION ■ HE Class of '44 dedicates its yearbook to those of the faculty who are now serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. These men and women who formerly so skillfully guided us along the Road of Knowledge are now fighting so that their contemporaries may continue this guidance and that we may retain the privilege to learn. Once teachers of Democracy, they are now part of a great world conflict to preserve the Democracy they taught. Again hostile men have dared to attempt to snuff out the Torch of Liberty and to destroy the Foundation of Freedom established by the forefathers of this wonderful nation. Again America has turned to Her people for aid and so these teachers have answered their Country's call to serve under Her colors in the Army, the Navy, and the Marines. It is to these Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines that we are ever grateful We shall never forget them nor how they fought to keep our country one nation—indivisible—with liberty and justice for all.

Now, as we get ready to go out into the business world, on to college, or into the service of the United States, we are fully aware that, through your untiring efforts, we are prepared for the future. You have given us the key to the portals of knowledge and for this and for the many ways in which you have aided and guided us, we are ever grateful. Sincerely, CLASS OF '44 Eleanor H.
