Ex Libris • 1944 • HILLSIDE HIGH SCHOOL HILLSIDE, NEW JERSEY THIS PUBLICATION, the 1944 EPOCH, was printed under war time restrictions. Despite this fact, we the Editorial staff, have endeavored to make it an everlasting keepsake of our high school days. Through the untiring efforts of the faculty and the Yearbook staff, we hope to bring to mind again the most cherished memories of the three years we have spent in this school. We have edited this book in hopes that it will be a constant reminder of the many friends we made, the knowledge we obtained, and the great fun we had, during some of the best years of our lives. fh J lit jrt CONTENTS Dedication . . 6-7 Faculty . . 8-9 Yearbook Staff . . 10-11 Senior Council . . 12 Seniors . . 14-36 Superlatives . . 38-40 Senior Play . . 41 Remember the Time . . . 42-43 Activities . . 46-54 Athletics . . 56-62 Advertisements . . . . . . 64-74 BARBARA BURGESS Marines MARTHA E. FOSTER Army Nurse Corps JOSEPH R FORD Army Faculty in Service ALBERT WEINER Navy ROBERT MINCHIN DEDICATION ■ HE Class of '44 dedicates its yearbook to those of the faculty who are now serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. These men and women who formerly so skillfully guided us along the Road of Knowledge are now fighting so that their contemporaries may continue this guidance and that we may retain the privilege to learn. Once teachers of Democracy, they are now part of a great world conflict to preserve the Democracy they taught. Again hostile men have dared to attempt to snuff out the Torch of Liberty and to destroy the Foundation of Freedom established by the forefathers of this wonderful nation. Again America has turned to Her people for aid and so these teachers have answered their Country's call to serve under Her colors in the Army, the Navy, and the Marines. It is to these Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines that we are ever grateful We shall never forget them nor how they fought to keep our country one nation—indivisible—with liberty and justice for all. Audrey B. Campbell Mary A. Cosgrove I 1 944 is regarded as a year of destiny for our great nation. That does not mean this is a year of fate or fortune. Rather it means that 1944 should be a favorable year—one of momentous events for our arms; of victories that no power on earth will be able to deny. Since 1944 is also a memorable date in your educational experience, I hope it will be a year of favorable destiny for you, a year when you clearly realize that within yourselves there lies latent power to move the world toward nobler and more fruitful ends than past generations have been able to attain. I regard it a distinct privilege to know so many fine young people as those who pass through the school. You are a part the thousands who have been an inspiration to the teachers of Hillside High School. I wish you might be with us longer, but prolonged presence would not best serve your interests. It is time to go in order that you may undertake more important activities. My best wishes will follow you always. Sincerely yours, WILBUR H. COX, Principal WILBUR H. COX Principal W. Now, as we get ready to go out into the business world, on to college, or into the service of the United States, we are fully aware that, through your untiring efforts, we are prepared for the future. You have given us the key to the portals of knowledge and for this and for the many ways in which you have aided and guided us, we are ever grateful. Sincerely, CLASS OF '44 Eleanor H. Carmen Massimino 36 Please Forgive Us Mr. Lincoln pOUR sore and hectic years ago, we students dragged forth into this school, a new Freshman deceived in elementary school and dedicated to the proposition that all teachers are created meanies. Now we are engaged in a great senior term, testing whether this student or any other student so deceived and dedicated can receive his diploma. We are met in the great assembly hall of this school. We have come to dedicate a portion of this Yearbook to those who gave their dues that this Senior Class might live. It is although fitting and proper that we do this. But in a large sense, we cannot dedicate, we can't even concentrate, we must not hollow our heads. The great mathematicians, living and dead, who have taught here, have confused us far beyond our poor power to add or subtract. This school will little note nor long remember what we say here, but they can't possibly forget what we did here. It is for us, that from this day forth, we take increased devotion to this school to which we gave the last full measure of commotion; that we here highly resolve that our struggles shall not have been in vain; that this high school under Mr. Cox, shall have a new batch of Freshman and that the government of the Seniors, by the Seniors and for the Seniors, shall not perish from Hillside. The purpose of the Hi-Y organization is to insure clean speech, clean sportsmanship, clean scholarship, and clean living for all who are members as well as to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian living. THE HI-Y ORGANIZATION Ics Football ELL DONE' was the most fitting description of this year's football season as was adeptly put by Coach Dubow in describing this year's exceedingly successful pigskin secession. Despite the lack of mass, Hillside High in 1943, under the able coaching of Sam Dubow and Al Vreeland, evolved one of the best teams in the history of the school by capturing the Group 1 1 1 Championship for the second time in two years, and by finishing the season undefeated and untied. The strong forward wall was among the best, but would have been wasted had it not been for a sparkling backfield studed with such gems as Richkus and Dill who spurred on with marvelous passing and plunging respectively. After starting off the season by toppling the giant , Thomas Jefferson, they continued by spilling Kearny and Orange. After disposing of Union and Cranford, Belleville and Linden fell easy prey to the onrushing Comets. Mighty Irvington and finally Weequahic, which surprisingly gave us a mild case of shattered nerves to digest after a tough Turkey Day squabble, fell helpless before the Hillside steam roller . The Hillers were further honored by becoming the fourth best team in the state, an honor usually reserved for the group IV teams. The almost perfect season was rounded off by head coach Dubow's and Vreeland's being honored at a dinner given the team by the Elks of Hillside. The members of the team were as follows: Backs: Dill, Richkus, Dlugosz, Schulman, Stevens, Goehring Bumen, Cook, Erck. Ends: DiBuono, Cancellari, Porch, Simonoff, Meola. Guards: Treger, Sulkowski, Mullan, Singe, O'Donnell. Tackles: Ferrigno, Shelbourne, Baironas, Caston. Centers: Condrillo, Levine. Managers: Oram, Ford, Dzuna, Allen, Maczali. Fighting against a handicap of inexperience the team suffered a number of very close defeats. A bright-spot of a heart breaking season arrived when a highly favored Weequahic squad, for the first time in the annals of our basketball history, bowed to a hard fighting Hillside quintet. This achievement duplicated later in the season clearly indicated the true ability of the team. Top scoring honors were highly contested for with Richkus leading the field, having accumulated 148 points. Following closely on his heels were Szarko with 136 points and Fortunato with 123 points. Coach Albert Vreeland did a highly commendable job with the material available, taking into consideration the all important factors of height and experience, both of which were lacking this year. The final chapter of the season concluded when the Hillside five met a superior Jefferson team in the first round of the Union County Tournament. Fighting all the way the Comets proved no easy mark for the highly touted Jefferson aggregation. The varsity squad consisted of Fred Szarko, Charlie Richkus, Joe Fortunato, Frank Senters and Carlo DiBuono. Varsity substitutes were Joe Lewis, Gerry Goldberg and Doc Dlugozz. Hillside lost a valuable asset when Joe Dill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. This year, due to the absence of our old coach, Red Weiner, the school called upon our still quite able Mr. Sam Dubow to take over. He did, and produced what we now remember as a highly successful year. The team was composed of quite a few veterans from previous years. Fred Szarko and Charlie Richkus were the iron men of the mound and hot corner respectively. Composing the rest of the team were: pitchers, Sulkowski, Barnett; catchers, Levine, Jasinski; infielders, Dlugiosz, DiBuono, Melia, Fortunato, Carpenter and Bishop; outfielders, Berta, Kane, and Geohring. The managers were Mickey Condrillo, Frank Smiley, and Alex Taylor. Track 1 ISREGARDING the small turnout for this grueling sport, our able coach, Al Vreeland, molded a practically unbeatable track team around only two returning letter men. The season began witth Bernie Geohring, Frank Senters, Edward Dea, and Marsden Miller taking, as components of the mile relay team, second place at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. In the four lap and half mile positions were Frank Craven, Manuel Fernandez, Walter Tabit, Raymond Vincent, Joe Finn, and Frank Nulton, Philip Georgi and Loren Huber, respectively. Easily overcoming all opponents in the high and low hurdles and broad jump were Marsden Miller and Edward Dea. The able contenders for the field events were: Jay Schulman, shot put; Joseph Lewis and Ely Simanoff, discus and Javelin; Frank Senters, high jump; Bernie Geohring and Joseph Lewis, pole vault. Breezing off the sprints were John O'Donnell, Edward Dea and Bernie Geohring. The balance of this year's fine team was composed of Matera, Heffner, Chamberlain, Ebdon, Erck, Golda, Bean, Krantz, Kiesel, Felber, DeVito, Dubow. 59 G. A. A, THE Girls' Athletic Association, under he supervision of Miss Ostrom and Mrs. Burns, had a very successful year. The new system of interclass competition, which was inaugurated last year, has brought about friendlier relations between the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Hockey started in September and continued through October. The girls played every Tuesday and Thursday under the guidance of the senior supervision. Doris Westendorf and Mrs. Burns were the umpires and taught the girls hockey skills. Archery y RCHERY, under the guidance and supervision of Miss Irma Ostrom, had a very successful year. The following members were on the team: Barbara Bautad, Evelyn Smith, Dorothy Oravetz, Marilyn Voelk, and Margaret Strebinger. Each one of the members won a target price at the two tournaments in Bloomfield. There were also other tournaments with different schools throughout the year. y FTER the hockey seasun table tennis and badminton were played in the gym. The girls formed teams of two and competed against one another. The Senior supervisors for these two sports were Thelma Lillie and Margery Beck, respectively. In the spring, softball teams were organized by the girls and intramural games were played. Modern Dancing ODERN dancing, under the direction of Mrs. Muriel T. Burns, drew a rather large turnout this year. The girls, with Beverly Chamberlain as Senior Supervisor; formed two dance groups. One group worked on the folk dances of the Allied Nations across the sea. The second group, using interpretive dancing, endeavored to depict the Four Freedoms. Both groups, in a combined program, danced for members of the P. T. A. and also for the student body in an assembly. Basketball gASKETBALL, also under the direction of Mrs. Muriel T. Burns was organized by Mary Doran, Senior Supervisor. Senior, junior, and sophomore teams were chosen. The girls held successful play days on Tuesday and Thursday noons. Separate teams, composed by senior, junior and sophomore girls from various teams, held interscholastic games with girls from Linden High School and Battin High School at Hillside. i 61 IRMA B. OSTROM MURIEL T. BURNS CHEERLEADERS THIS year Hillside High's cheering team was composed of fourteen members. With Frances Orban and Jack Struss acting as co-captains, the squad consisted of five seniors, five juniors, and four sophomores. In the opening season there was a junior squad , but these students were soon unified with the others of the team in order to form the new cheers. The cheerleaders, as in former years, afford the contact between the school's team and the fans along with the students. Along with the other values of cheerleading, such as development of poise, and the achievement of cooperation, it plays a large part in the development of sportsmanship. Mr. Buchner acted as faculty adviser. RIFLE TEAM rPHE Rifle team, under the able supervision of Mr. C. Harper and coached by Mr. Edgar Ebdon has enjoyed one of its most successful seasons since its start. The team as in previous years has been picked from the ten first averages acquired in interclub competition. Thus the team varied throughout the year since some shooters obtained a higher average than team members, and replaced them. The ten now composing the team are: Ed Earle, Jack Ebdon, Robert Getzoff, Ken Krantz, Frank Nulton, Ray Cheston, Peter Matera, Robert Schultz, Frank Jennings, Steven Mozalek, and Walter Label. Matches were held with Caldwell, Summit, Teaneck, Asbury Park and Poly Tech. In the matches held the five men with the highest average were Earle, Ebdon, Nulton, Krantz and Matera. 62 All that lies before this page Depends on what lies after. Various subscribers.
