V ?v W I . • T7T 7 E, the editorial staff, hope that this book will not be ’ ' scanned once and then stored away somewhere on a shelf to be forgotten. The untiring efforts of the yearbook staff have made the EPOCH of '43 possible. The book is offered in the hope that it will be treasured and read often because it contains the cherished memories of our high school years. We have attempted to include in this annual the things that have made high school life real and vital to us. High school is indeed a wonderful institution, but high school means us than just a place where we can obtain an education, to which we belonged, the sports in which we par-vents we attended, and the friends we made are we warS o remember. Therefore, when ’Sl riemories of these things become dim, we can make them vivi Main by dipping into this book and reliving again those years ml vere once so dear to us. fPHE CLASS OF '43 dedicates its yearbook to the American flag. Our flag is a symbol of all that we in America hold to be fine and right and dear in this war-torn world. We know that as long as we can see the stars and stripes waving freely in the wind, our country is still the land of the free and the home of the brave. FACULTY ALICE K. Saw the four wolves today—Ball, Carey, Seale, and Seifert—what those guys don't know about girls . . . Feins had two socks on that matched today—probably a mistake . . . Happened to overhear Bernice Unger talking this afternoon—have extreme doubts as to whether she knows what half those big words mean . . . Heavens, that Platts babe is small (small here means short only) . . . That Bill Curtis certainly knows his planes . . . Saw unusual sight today—Steve Persak's hair was mussed . . . Had solid gym period today, Dubow's Doughboys are really coming along . . . Snuffy Smith found a bird's nest in that mop of hair this morning—both birds and Smith are doing well, thank you . . . Bumped into Bob Bloom after lunch this noon—what lovely blue eyes . . . Estell Chuita was at the dance tonight accompanied by Schultz, McQueen and Gottesman—Lease-lend maybe . . . Franny Vasilauskas got her hair cut. The ends got dirty anyway when they dragged on the floor . . . Saw Mary Di Buono this morning—wonder how they spell that sound crickets make . . . Went to Senior Play tonight—that Totten kid has a chance in big-time . . . Lillian Stollberg ran out of stationery again, no wonder, writing to Jack twice a day . . . Saw Fred Van Poznak leaning away on his broom—he sure is an ambitious lad. Who knows, he might be promoted to head janitor some day . . . We wonder if Louise Zinszer will get over being the slap-happy kid she is today. We hope not . . . Bill Johnson was playing G-man again today— better call up J. Edgar Hoover and tell him about a promising prospect . . . Strange sight—Nunny Kleinwaks at a lose for words . . , Saw the inseparables today. Sophie Motyszka and Helen Brunner. Ain't love grand . . . June's role as the Sweetheart of her Private suits her very well . . . Heard a conversation between Geraldine Rudine and Ethel Hruska—maybe someday they'll slow down to 300 words per minute . . . Today I went to graduation—was disappointed upon not receiving extra credit for extra three years spent in high school—Oh well. IN RECOGNITION Four members of our class entered the armed forces before work on the EPOCH began, and therefore, their pictures could not be entered in the yearbook. Nevertheless, they are still to be considered members of Hillside's Class of '43 and will receive their diplomas along with the other 240 seniors in June. We regret that we were unable to include the four boys in the preceding pages, but would like to enter their names at this time. 38 JOHN BRODERICK MUNSON BURKE WALTER COYNE FRED FISHER Se u i TANEY S ONE-TRACK MIND ' a three-act play by Dorothy Bennett and J Hannah, was presented by the senior class under the direction of Mrs. Ula Orr Clark. Cabinet ”|”HIS year a Cabinet was incorporated into the S.G.A. government, a form used only a few times in previous years. Strictly supplementary to the S. G. A. Council, the Cabinet debated any problems that arose in the school before they were acted upon by the Council. The Cabinet was composed of Steven Persak, Fred Van Poznak, Mary Coppola, Sterling Paterson, Muriel Kleinwaks, and the Senior S. G. A. Officers. s 0 JV aft «vS-r;'. ’ w ■ S. G. A. Council (COMPRISING the S. G. A. Council were one representative and one alternate from each homeroom. The council debated and decided upon all financial affairs of the S. G. A. Government. This included drawing up the yearly budget, sponsoring clubs, and backing school activities. The S. G. A. officers were William Johnson, president; Betty Fisher, vice-president; Muriel Hale, secretary; Ruth Miller, treasurer; Joan Chuita and Betty Clauberg, assistant treasurers. National Honor Society JJNDER the guidance of Mr. William Stacey Dunham, Miss Eleanor Maurer, and Mr. Irvin P. The officers were Fred Van Poz-nak, president; Constance Haga-man, vice-president; Geraldine Rudine, secretary; and Harold Got-tesman, treasurer. S. G. A. Collectors WITH Miss Margaret Gaylord as adviser, a collector and assistant were chosen for each of the twenty-three homerooms in order to conduct payments on S. G. A. tickets. The main functions of the collectors were to punch the tickets and to record the payments. Junior Red Cross CONCLUDING another year, the Junior Red Cross, under the supervision of Mrs. Annamae Rudolph, made up gift sets containing small personal needs that were sent to young girls in England. They also made dresses, sweaters, and stuffed animals for less fortunate children. The organization sponsored an afternoon dance and a luncheon sale, the profits of which were used in furthering the national defense effort. Chess Club QUIDED by Mr. Edwin Wissing, the Chess Club held matches with surrounding high schools including Thomas Jefferson, West Side, and Wecquahic. In addition, the club taught those members less efficient in playing chess the fundamentals of the game, i The officers were Philip Danuf-sky, president, and Chester Corby, secretary-treasurer. Table Tennis Club AMONG the new organizations in the high school was the Table Tennis Club which had Mr. F. H. Tichenor as adviser. Meetings were held three times weekly. Through a process of elimination a team of five boys was formed. Through a similar procedure a girls' team was also formed. Beside their regular meetings, the club held matches with other schools. Officers of the club were Leonard Intrabartolo, president; Ruth Smith, vice-president; and Fred Hintenberger, secretary-treasurer. Student Court gESIDES its regular patroling duties the Student Court supervised assembly passing. Any student committing an offense appeared before Chief Justice Muriel Hale, Theresa De Groot, Steven Persak, Roy Britt, and Fred Van Poznak. Janet Krantz served as court clerk. Mr. William Stacey Dunham was adviser. VOL. 6, NO. 2 THE HILLER OCTOBER 15. 1942 HILLSIDE HIGH SCHOOL HILLSIDE. N. J. Several of the members worked in the day nursery located in Elizabeth. Included in their social affairs the Girl Reserves sponsored a dance with the Hi-Y. Girl Reserve members attended the Union County Girl Reserve banquet in Elizabeth. In addition, two members represented the Hillside High Girl Reserves at a week-end convention at Lake Sloan, Lakeville, Connecticut. The yearly officers were Alice Connelly, president; Mary Coppola, vice-president; Estelle Chuita, secretary; and Gertrude Miller, treasurer. Hi-Y y ITH the object of furthering high standards of character throughout the high school and community, the Hi-Y has completed a program of school service in the past year. Affiliated with the Newark Y. M. C. A., it took part in much of that organization's activities. Among these were several conferences to which the Hi-Y sent delegates. The club had for the first half of the year the following officers: William Heffner, president; Julius Puchy, vice-president; William Bahret, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Irvin P. Sowers supervised the organization. 64 gUILDING his squad around three returning lettermen, Coach Albert Weiner turned out an eleven that captured for the third time the North Jersey Group III Sectional Crown. Opening their season in an auspicious manner, the Hillers ran roughshod over a Perth Amboy squad, 34-7, thus avenging last year's defeat. With three members of the first eleven on the bench, recuperating from injuries sustained in the inaugural, the Comets dropped two hard fought battles to Kearny, 6-0, and Orange, 12-3. Steadily gaining their former full strength, the Hillers, showing increased cooperation with each contest, swept through Union, 25-7, and Cranford, 21-6. The highlight of the season came when the Comets traveled to Belleville and knocked the favored Bellboys from the ranks of the unbeaten, 25-0. The locals toppled Linden in their next regularly scheduled contest, 19-6. For the next game the Hillers were host to an Irvington team, and this contest marked the first time these arch diamond rivals had ever met on a football field. In a nip and tuck battle the Comets finally came out on the not-too-long end of a 19-18 score. In their annual Turkey-Day encounter, the Hillers overcame a stubborn Weequahic squad by the merest of margins, 2-0, thus ending a highly successful season. Head coach Weiner and assistant Joseph Forde together with members of the championship squad were feted by the Hillside Elks. Members of the team were as follows: Backs: Gill, Bloom, J. Dill, Richkus, Feins, Lawyer, Tregor, Wojcik, Dlugosz, Goehring, Stevens. Ends: Callendrello, Heffner, Richards, Mirda, Simonoff, Bairunas, Leiber, Mann, Cancellari, Meola. Tackles: Lyman, Ferrigno, Miller, Shelbourne. Guards: A. Dill, Kelly, Mullan, Singe, Sulkowski, DiBuono, Wellet, Munson, Dailey, Lewis. Centers: Rayner, Condrillo, Levine, Burke. Managers: Oram, Sorrentino, Dzuna, Forde, Allen. “pHE Comet squad completed a successful season, even though they played in greater competition than in previous years. Not taking tournament competition into account the team displayed a record of eight victories and eight defeats. By drilling the team for speed and a fast break, coach Albert Vreeland turned several games which might have been defeats into well-earned victories. Specific evidence of the team's speed was seen in the Thomas Jefferson game. The heavily favored, once defeated Jefferson team was easily defeated by the fast breaking Comet squad. High scoring honors for the year were captured by Bob Carragino who registered a total of 1 30 points for the season. Carragino was followed by Bob Bloom and Fred Szarko. The first round of the Union Countv Tournament paired the squad with Westfield team which proved to be an easy victim. In the second round the Comets were paired with a picked Linden squad which had defeated them earlier in the season. In this encounter the Maroon eked out a one point victory, eliminating Linden from the tournament. The Hillers encountered a few bad breaks in the semi-finals and were defeated by a tough Rahway squad. The St3te Tournament saw the team overcome Linden and Morristown, but again go down to defeat before Rahway. The following fellows composed the Varsity team this year: Heffner, Johnson, Bloom, Carrigino, King, Dill, Szarko, Fortunato, Dlugozz, Richkus, and Bensky. 11LLSIDE High School's baseball team opened its 1943 season bolstered by five returning lettermen. The infield, which was supported on either ends by Charles Chippie Callendrello and Charles Richkus, on first and third respectively, and with two newcomers in the center, Joe Fortunato on second and Charles Horvath at shortstop, proved a nemesis to all opposition. Centerfielder Sid Feins, leftfielder Bill Chesney, and rightfielder Joe Dill, all veterans, made the outfield a capable match for the rest of the team both in hitting and fielding prowess. Sharing most of the honors at the mound were Fred Szarko and Dick Kugelman who were received capably by Johnny Jasinski. Back for his seventh year as coach, Al Wiener is again aiming for another Group III Championship. Other members of the squad were: pitchers, Sulkowski, Barnett, Pop- pola; catcher, Brows; infielders, Dlugosz, Di Buono, Melia, Sajiwich; outfielders, Berta, Stevens, Stejak, and Mitchell. The baseball managers were Carl Wheat and Mickey Condrillo. 68 ' piGHTING time, dust, and cinders. Coach Frank Hill put together a typically hard-to-beat Hillside track team. The mile relay team, composed of Bernie Goerhring, Tom Car-daci, Bill Johnson, and Bill Heffner, the latter two veterans of last year, placed second in the Penn Relays. Capably handling the sprints and quarter-mile, Bill Johnson and Warren Totten proved to be a swift combination. Filling just as suitably the mile and half mile positions were Bill Johnson, Walter Danhein, and Tom Cardaci. Leaping hurdles were Marsden Miller, William Sinnot and Wil liam Gearon. Covering the field events were: William Gearon at pole-vaulting, Heffner and Johnson at broad and high-jumping respectively, and Al Rayner shotput, discus, and javelin. The balance of the team was composed of Ray Schultz, James McQueen, John O'Donnel, Howard Kiesel, Stewart Dailey, Robert Weishapel, Emil Maresz, Frank Jennings, Pete Matera, Ray Vincent, Edward Dea, Ely Simonoff, Fred Hintenberger, and Harry Von Duhn. The managers were David Hutchinson and Rudolf Gebhardt. r GIRLS' T7T7ITH the purpose of promoting friendly compe- tition among the sophomore, junior, and senior classes, the Girls' Athletics Association revised its usual program and introduced a new interclass competition system. Under the guidance of Miss Irma Ostrom and Mrs. Muriel Burns, the plan was very successful. Heading the popularity list in sports were hockey, basketball, and archery. Elaborating upon the rules, regulations and technicalities of the sports proved beneficial to each individual participating. Badminton, table tennis, softball, tumbling, modern dancing and volley ball were all included in the Girls' Athletics program. Girls gave individual instructions to those who had little knowledge of the various sports. The Swimming Club was under the direction of Mrs. Lillian Gillies. A THLtTICS Under the direction of Miss Ostrom, the archery team had an unusually active and successful year. Meeting three times a week, the girls really proved their ability and marksmanship. Archery awards were based on scores, gold a-wards for any girl who scored 220, silver for 175, and bronze for 135. During the year individual competition was held using the ladder system as a basis. In the ladder system, any girl can challenge an opponent and if she remains undefeated she will be the winner. The elected officers were Olga Lew, president; Mary Coppola, vice president; Doris Westendorf, sec- retary; and Jean Schnabel, treasurer. The club has expanded its activities, enrollment, and touched the interest of every girl in the school. Arranged by Mary Doran, program committee chairman, hockey and basketball games were more successful than those in other years. Cheerleaders |N former years the squad usually consisted of four girls and four boys, but this year the unit had six girls and only three boys. At first this arrangement seemed unbalanced, but it proved to make the precision and new formations appealing to the crowds. Lillian Stollberg and Melvin Anted, veterans of last year's squad, were co-captains of the '42 and '43 squad. Alice Jussek, Mary Euman, Claire Smith, Ellen Lewis, Francis Orban, Sterling Patterson, and Sanford Smith were the new-comers. Mr. Walter Krumbiegel, now a member of the armed forces, and Mr. Elliot Mandl, student teacher, were the advisers of this group. Rifle Team I JNDER the supervision of Mr. Edgar Ebdon, the instructor, and Mr. Walter Howell, the faculty adviser, the Rifle team has successfully accomplished its goal of a victorious season. Under the new plan four position matches had been inaugurated to heighten the competitive feeling throughout the clubs. They also gave the students excellent advanced training for the army in which four position shooting is a necessity. The team picture, left, represents the club in the first several matches. Later on in the season the club was represented by the shooters who achieved the highest averages since the last try-outs for the team.
