Published by Senior Class orewor The publication of the 1942 Epoch, is a symbol of a united student body. It is the result of the combined efforts of more than two-hundred seniors, and, as such, must express for them their deep-felt gratitude and respect for the faculty that has wisely guided them for four years. The conscientious labors of our teachers have enabled us to take, with confidence, a place in the gigantic economic scheme of life, and any measure of success we achieve there may be directly attributed to them. And if it is truly said that the Education is the chief defense of Democracy, the faculty has aided immeasurebly in preserving the American Way of life. So, to the entire administrative and teaching staff of Hillside High School, this Foreword wishes to express for the class of '42 a sincere Thank You for past patience, knowledge, and assistance. Mr. Stacey Dunham advised the court. 55 Ready, Aim, Fire! JJNDER the sharp and steady eye of Mr. Merrill, faculty adviser, the Rifle Club enjoyed a fine season. Affiliated with the National Rifle Association, they strove for marksmanship medals and titles. Interscholastic rifle meets were also conducted during the course of the year. This year's aggregation had the privilege of using a new rifle range, which was constructed by both last year's and present members. A special girls' section which has a special day for practice every week, was formed this year. Mrs. Gillies was the adviser. 56 GRADUATION, having taken a heavy toll upon Hillside's gridiron hopes, new head coach, Red Weiner faced the task of moulding a formidable squad with only three veterans. Besides graduation, the team was harassed by the addition of several powerful teams to the schedule. Among those added was Asbury Park, 1940 State Champions. The Hillers managed to vanquish Union, Cranford, and Belleville squads. These victories were sandwiched between losses to Kearny and Orange by scores of 21 —14 and 6—0, and Perth Amboy, 13—0. The annual Turkey Day encounter with Weequahic High School ended in a scoreless deadlock and for the first time in four years did not mark a defeat for the Hiller's arch-rivals. That the team did not sport as good a record as last year's squad, bears no reflection on the spirit of the players. The Maroon eleven, always a hard fighting unit, was only conquered in the face of superior odds. In the backfield Bob Bloom and Jack Issler sparked the Comets' offensive powers, while Fat Winnicki, Beans DeProspo, and Chippy Callendrillo were outstanding on the line. The latter four mentioned were selected for All State Group 3 elevens. The coaching staff included Albert Weiner, backfield and head coach; Joseph Forde, end coach; and Kasimer Hipolit, line coach and new addition to the staff. Members of the team were as follows: Backs—Issler, Bloom, DiBuono, Smith, Feins, J. Dill, Richards, Richkus, Gill, Treger, Brenner, Robertozzi, Lawyor and Seifert. Centers—DeProspo, Dierolf, Burke, and Ball. Guards—Winnicki, Pierson, Massimino, A. Dill, Gieges, Rayner, Mullan, and Piaget. Tackles— Lyman, Paolercio, Ferraro, Doherty, Carsidona, Miller, Golding, and Singe. Ends—Carrigino, Callendrillo, Heffner, O'Lock, Petit, Mirda, LaBruno, Seal, and Buckmaster. MR. WEINER Coach Petras Zupnik Marantz rOUGH this year's basketball team did not live up to the promise they showed for an outstanding season, an excuse may be found in the fact that the opposition was much stiffer this year than in previous years. An extreme lack of height was also a destructive factor. The won and lost record of Coach Albert Vreeland's team does not show their true ability, since several important games were lost by small margins. The high-light of a disappointing season came when the team avenged last year's defeat by Central, with a stirring one-point victory in the closing second of play Other high spots were the overnme period in the Plainfield game, and the close margin of score in the always hotly contested Weequahic game. The team hit its peak form of the year in the first round of the Union County Tournament, when it defeated a picked St. Patrick's five. In the quarter finals of the tourney, the Hillers came from behind in the last half-period, but could not overcome a large Linden advantage and lost by one point. Beans DeProspo was the outstanding scorer with his forward mate Bill Zupnik running a close second. Luchie Lew did yoeman work both as a backboard and defensive man. Ted Marantz and Butch Petras, steady ball-handlers and defensive players, rounded out the capable first five. The reserves were: Johnson, Bloom, King, Heffner, Callendrillo, Szarko. MR. VREELAND Coach HILLSIDE HIGH opened its spring practice this year with only five veterans left from last year's Nine. The mound staff was led by Ludwig Lew who had turned in excellent performances during the last campaign. The rest of the pitching staff included Walter Dzuroska, Walter Szarko, and Bill Zupnik. Mike Camodeca, who turned in a great job behind the plate last year, was again the other half of the battery. First base was Charles Callendrillo, while Donald Butch Petras, another veteran, guarded the keystone sack. At short was Bob Bloom, and guarding the hot corner was James Griffin. Bob De Prospo, handy with a bat, played left field and gave trouble to many an opposing pitcher. Speedy Sidney Feins occupied the center field spot. Lud Lew played right field when not pitching. Otherwise the spot was played by William Chesney. Al Weiner, who last year piloted Hillside to the Greater Newark Baseball Championship and the Group III Championship, once again assumed the responsibilities as coach. William Solosy and James Lamont acted as managers. Other members of the squad were: Pitchers—Dan Miller, Roy Britt, Al Brenner; Catchers —John Gill, John Jasinsky; Infielders—Peter LoPrete, Charles Richkus, Bernard Budjake, Fred Szarko, Edward Mirda; Outfielders—Fred Kugelman, Robert Mason, and Henry Lawyer. MR. WEINER Coach Rah! Rah! J-jILLSIDE HIGH'S cheering squad featured something new this year, a tumbling and conga cheer. Both were popular with students and fans. With Ruth McNamara acting as captain, the girls' squad was composed of Eleanor Till, veteran, Evelyn Edwards, Lillian Stollberg, and Helen Peters, newcomers. The boys' squad under the leadership of Frank Kemp, consisted of Melvin Anted, a veteran, with Car-roll Lampe and Arthur Henoch, two newcomers. Mr. Walter Krumbiegel acted as faculty adviser. Rifle Team THE rifle team was able to shoot on a home range for the first time this year. Though the majority of members were newcomers to the team, the results of the matches were a decided improvement over those of last year. The schedule consisted of twelve interscholastic meets as well as participation in contests conducted by the National Rifle Association. Mr. Merrill, the faculty adviser, spent much time with the team. Through his efforts the team improved as time went on. GIRLS' ATHLETICS “J HIS was one of the most successful years ever enjoyed by Girls' Athletics in respect to enrollment, enjoyment, activities, play days, parties and the participation of every active girl. Under the guidance of Miss Os-trom and Mrs. Burns, and led by Marion Wessels, President, Eva Spital, Vice President, Henrietta Minori, Secretary, and Olga Lew, Treasurer, the club has expanded its interscholastic competition by participating in play days with Battin, Linden, Union, Regional, Bloomfield, Kearny, Irvington and Woodbridge. Arranged by Theresa De Groot, chairman, and a committee, the Hockey and Basketball play days were more active and successful than in other years. Girls' Athletics is especially proud of the Archery team which has won many awards in interscholastic competition, under the direction of Miss Ostrom. Because of the great enrollment (113) of Girls' Athletics we were able to introduce many new sports and able to increase the interest in the old. Although basketball lead the popularity list hockey, badminton, darts, table tennis, soft-ball, modern dancing, tumbling, volley ball, archery, and swimming were given the full support of all throughout the year. Regular monthly meetings were held and a strict ruling of attendance was enforced. JUNIOR CLASS-1943 rPWO years and ten months ago, our Juniors brought forth in Hillside High 4 School, a new class conceived under Mr. Mitchell's wing, and dedicated to the proposition that in 1943 they would graduate with shining honors. They are now engaged in a lot of studying, testing whether that class or any class so conceived and so dedicated will ever graduate. Now for a few vital statistics: Frosh year—President, Roy Britt; Vice President, Henry Singe; Secretary, Muriel Hale. Sophomore Year—President, Olga Lew; Vice President, Muriel Hale; Secretary, Theresa De Groot. Junior Year—President, Mary Coppola; Vice President, Mary DiBuono; Secretary, Theresa De Groot. They, the members of the Junior Class, in order to establish more good times, have also run four dances, two World's Fair trips, several theatre parties, and three plays. (Below is depicted a scene from the Junior Play, Grandma's Christmas. ). Their parting wish to the graduting class is, We hate to see you go, but thank goodness, at long last, we're SENIORS. SOPHOMORE CLASS-1944 • PHIS year's Sophomores, the first class to graduate from the Abraham Morris Junior High, was at first slightly unaccustomed to the intensity of the extra-curricular life of the Senior High School. This fault, however, was speedily corrected during the last semester, with many 44'ers stepping into both the scholastic and athletic spotlight. Hiller work in particular attracted the class members, and many fresh new voices were added to the Glee Club. Their parting wish to the graduating class is, We hate to see you go, Thomas Mateer; Secretary, Doris Westendorff. The classes' first dance, held in March, was a great success, especially considered in the light of a first venture. All-in-all, the infants have carved quite a starting record for themselves and we are sure that they will continue to be true to the standards left to them by the Class of '42. The Sophomores parting message to that graduating class is Health, Wealth, and Happiness in the new world Hillside is setting out to conquer. Below is a scene from their first play, The Wedding. 67 JcaL y i. y xxXcc 4u_4 )s gJX 7 ) UtC4nXrfy , yi ey l._Xt' ' kdtct-i?- v 7? 3- ? JyO h £Jl fJoJu Q-J?ta£6 V. JL 7} —, ?7.
