I ww 4 Class of l937 UR journey began with the election of class officers: Gladys Hill as president, John Anderson as vice-president, Walter Nuse, secretary, and Louis Tisch, treasurer. Life was made more vivid by boys' and girls' basketball teams, participating in the sport and competing with other classes. ln the Sophomore year, Louis Tisch was elected president, Adelaide Heath, vice-president, and Doris Brengel, secretary. The thrill of the year was the Sophomore Dance. Our Junior year saw us forging ahead, with Gladys Hill again as presi- dent, with Louis Tisch,.vice-president, and Janet Perrine, secretary. ln this year we had numerous social events, beginning with our Junior Dance. The Junior Prom was a clever affair we all remember with pride. It took the form of a nautical dance. The gymnasium was decked with flags, anchors, ropes, and all the appearances of a voyage. Did we say deckorated ? The S. S. Junior Prom was a great success. The Junior-Senior Prom, for the departing seniors, was a gay affair, much enjoyed. Our grand and glorious Senior year saw Louis Tisch at the helm, Thomas Greengrove as vice-president, and Janet Perrine as secretary. At our Hallowe'en dance we pursued ghosts and witches' among the cornstalk decorations. 'We were ever a brave class! But we had, nevertheless, a Coward play as our Senior dramatic effort. l'll Leave lt To You, a clever modern play by Noel Coward, was ably coached by Mrs. Maull and Mr. Steen- grafe. J L J ln the athletic world, the senior girls beat the women faculty, but the boys were downed by the faculty men, both contests .being hotly fought at basketball games. 1 ' The Washington Trip, an unforgettable joy, istalways an offset to the tragedy of final exams. Another compensation is the greatest event of the four years, the Senior Prom. -- AWe want to thank our faculty advisers for ourlhappiness and success, -the chief adviser, Mr. Althenn, assisted by Mrs. Estabrook, Mrs. Bailey, Miss Ennis, Mr. Hill and Mr. Steengrafe. , Ten MOST POPULAR Janice Howlett Yvonne Sommer Louis Tisch Walter Wariczick BEST LOOKING Jeanne McKinney Yvonne Sommer Lorin Dore Alard Hanover MOST GENTLEMAN LY Edward Wissing George Steuerwald MOST LADYLI KE Janet Perrine Louise Bowne CUTEST Yvonne Sommer Pauline Wolfe Thomas Greengrove Alard Hanover MOST SOPHISTICATED Meryl Cook Eileen Norton Edward Wissing Herbert Weber BEST DANCER Elsie Stewart Violet Deuell Joseph Korbanick Lloyd Schorr SENIOR SUPERLATIVES CLASS SHEIK Edward Wissing Albert Mell CLASS SHEBA Estelle Millea Doris Brengel MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Adelaide Heath Shirley Unger Leonard Peck George Steuerwald BEST MIXER Nelda Haley Florence McClure Joseph Korbanick Louis Tisch WRlGLEY'S BEST CUSTOMER Muriel Keyworth Juliette Dassing William Hess Paul Matweishyn BEST DRESSER Shirley Unger Mildred Katz Joseph Korbanick Leslie Leonard BEST ATHLETE Jane Mason Ma ry Jotantos Walter Wariczick Alard Hanover WITTIEST Violet Deuell Evelyn Conran Robert Kane James O'Neill Eleven DID MOST FOR CLASS Gradys Hill Adelaide Heath Louis Tisch George Steuerwald NOISIEST Constance Reynolds Jane Feins Martin Beno Harold Kiley QUIETEST I Myra Glass Ardelle Van Allen Frank Walker Frank Fong MOST PERSONALITY Gladys Hill Janice Howlett John Lapp Elliot Mullins FRIENDLIEST Gladys Hill Janice Howlett Joseph Korbanick Edward Jotantos MOSTAMBITIOUS Shirley Unger Adelaide Heath Louis Huber George Steuerwald MOST TALENTED Helen Welsch Lois McMahon Leonard Peck Matthew Jacobson EUGENE ADAMS Schoo'days Gene Business Photography Club 3. Thirty-five SENIOR PLAY ILL Leave It To You, a three-act comedy, was the choice of the Class ot '37, They presented the play on December lO, l l, and l2. The talent found among the seniors made the play a dashing success. On account of the large number of seniors, Ruth Maull, the coach of the play, was able to select two casts. The casts included: Joan Waterston, Victor Mason, Leonard Peck, Eileen Norton, Gladys Hill, Herbert Weber, Lloyd Schorr, Nelda Haley, Evelyn Conran, Meryl Cook, Robert Kane, Janice Howlett, Yvonne Sommer, Arthur Jennings, Philip Reichman, Janet Perrine, Louise Bowne, and Lois Mac Mahon. Thirty-s THE WASHINGTON TRI P N May nineteenth the '37 Senior Class, l67 strong, set out in six new buses on the annual trip to Washington. After having lunch at Aberdeen, we reached Annapolis in time to see the dress parade. Tired from the long ride, our arrival at Washington at six P. M. nevertheless stimulated our anticipation of good times, and after being refreshed by a fine dinner at the New Colonial Hotel, the party divided into two groups, some going swimming at the famous pool in the Ambassador Hotel, others going to a theatre. Buildings and points of interest were visited the follow- ing two days by each bus, provided with competent guides to explain every- thing. Dancing and gaiety filled an enjoyable evening for all on board, in the moonlight sail up the Potomac River. A banquet was held, on the last evening, after which members of the faculty and the class made brief humorous speeches. On the return trip a stop was made at Valley Forge, where Washington's headquarters still is to be seen. We reached Hillside about nine o'clock, and went to our homes to enjoy a much-needed rest. The Washington trip should be looked forward to by every under- graduate, as it is one of the finest opportunities in education and pleasure which the High School offers. Forty-three A Senior Dance IT was a beautiful evening in SUMMER, though the HEATH was terrific, ANDERSON had just disappeared over the HILL. The GREEN-GROVE, with its many BIRCH and PERRINE trees, was very quiet, except for the sound of the babbling BROOK. This was the night of the farewell party for ROBERTa, a beautiful and FAIR-CHILD. She was the daughter of the MASON, a very REICH-MAN. In the large house, preparations were well UNGER way. The ball room was like a GARLAND of flowers. Though DUF-FY was very high, they HYRA-d the GAIZ-BAND, famous for its SAXE section, and theme song DEVLlN The Deep Blue Sea. Everyone was DASSING around, and even in the kitchen the COOK had almost let the CURRIE sauce BYRNE, while she was BLAKE-ing a cake. Upstairs, there was just as much excitement. Roberta, in her CHAMBER, was trying to take a BARTH, and DWYER hair at the same time. To make matters worse, she had misplaced her GARNETT ring. Finally many guests arrived in big KREISLER cars and KANE in through the big GLASS DORE. The gathered in the HALL and HALEY-ed each other. At last, Roberta came onto the balcony upstairs. She looked SWEDER than ever with a background of long WHITALL, AN-DRI-ELLO room. CON-RAN up the stairs to greet her. He thought he was her BO- BERTZ what he didn't know would not HURTAY him. She came down and WILKEN-ed the rest. The servants BREN-GEL the food in and served it. They had things galore, including pickled HORNS, and ice cream COHENS. The guests were passing things HAN OVER fists. DE-MAR I think of it, I wouldn't be surprised if they all WARICZICK. After the meal, the people drifted onto the dance floor. There was many a NEU-MAN there, and Roberta was very popular because she HATH- AWAY with men, and it was known that she could DEUELL on the dance floor. Everyone was agreeing that DIETZ was the best time they had ever had. It sure was the KATZ. The beautiful moon WARDed off the thought of a storm, relieving many people who were sure it would WAIN-RIGHT in the house. All too soon, it was time to go to the BE-N-O railroad station, in fact, they didn't know WEBER or not they would make it. Never the less, they knew they would have to RUNIAK the dickens to get there on time. The NUSEpaper men were all ready, waiting, and greeted the group with loud HOLLOS. The boys all crowded around Roberta especially DAVID, SON of the MILLER, and JACOB, SON of the TAYLOR. The others: LEONARD, NATHAN, NORMAN, STEWART, BENJAMIN, AND WALTER, were taking care of her suitcases. The south BOWNE train roared into the station and Roberta called hastily good bye to her friends. Although she was going to the SCHORR for the rest of the SOMMER, she hated to leave these people. The train pulled out, and mournfully HERB-STERed as did the rest, after it. Roberta had gone and they knew they would MUSSER. TISCH TISCH! SOLLER, there ain't no more. VARSITY TRACK T the end ot this year's indoor track season, the Hillside High School track squad, coached by Walter Krumbiegel and assisted by Albert Vreeland, completed one ot its best seasons, since its start in the high school. A. U. meet, the winning ot the 880 yard run by Joseph Bumen in the Sunday Call meet, the winning of the 880 yard novice of Ed Cantillon in the Union County interscholastic meet, and the winning ot Harry Krumbiegel in the same meet. Outfielders-Hill, Bumen, Steuerwald, Butler, Butwell, and Humanik. lnfielders-Donley, Ellam, Wariczick, Hanover, Matweishyn and Cou- rian. Catchers-Runiak, Ferrigno, Steward, and Gill. Vida Gould, and fencing taught by Mr. Scaf- fati. Although only in its second year, our fencing team was in the state tournament. The Senior Girls' basketball team defeated the teachers in their annual night game, while the Junior team won the school champion- ship with the Seniors coming in second, CHEERLEADERS APTAINED by Lloyd Schorr, the Cheerleaders this year led loud, lusty yells at athletic events and pep rallies. Veterans who were on the squad last year include Captain Lloyd Schorr, Marjorie Breece, Frances Mae, Stanley Buchner, Norma Huber, and Nancy Gensel. Newcomers are Leroy Rubin, Adeline Hopf, and Benjamin Summer. Walter Krumbiegel is the faculty adviser. Last year's cheerleaders and this year's also, were selected by an elim- ination contest. Letters were awarded to all seniors and those who had served two years. fmzmm.wm.nuwumm1nn - I X l.'i P Q 'mv ivy' K . A. and athletic department, tennis is definitely back on the Hillside sports schedule. ln a tournament run off this Fall the original turnout of thirty candidates was cut down to a workable squad of ten. Again in eliminations held under the supervision of Coach Steengrafe early in May the varsity of three singles men, a doubles man, and an alternate was picked. A skeleton schedule has been carded for the inexperienced squad, with em- phasis on building toward next year, and little stress on this season's results. Varsity Golf Coach Howard T. Rickmeyer has built a new team around two of last year's alternates, and looks forward to a suc- cessful season. Municipal golf courses have been used by the practicing team. The members consist of John Anderson, manager, John Blake, Fred Wagner, Robert Berkowitz and Martin Beno. Sixty-three Hillside High School ' Rifle Club The Rifle team had a very successful year, under the able leadership of Coach Lawrence Treger, of the Hillside Police Department. Matches were shot with High School teams of Essex and Union Counties. Hill- side High won four matches, lost two, and were tied in one match. On Washington's Birthday several of the members shot in the Junior Cham- pionship of the Metropolitan District for boys under l8 years of age. Robert Priessnitz won 9th place and John Heg- eler lOth place. The team shoots at the Hillside Avenue Grammar School on Wednesdays of each week, and the Rifle Team expects to continue practising on their outdoor range on 29 Highway-Union County. The team is composed of two squads led by John Hegeler and Robert Priess- nitz. The following students compose the Rifle Club: Frank Priessnitz, Treasurer, Ernest Hegeler, Secretary, Richard Gaw- lik, Robert Priessnitz, John Hegeler, Robert Davison, Matthew Adamczyk, Douglas Taylor, Raymond Brunner, Tho- mas Gould, John Blake, and Ernest Schlosser. '42-T .I X Goodbye from l 937 Farewell, ye round red cardboard rings, And auditorium lunchroom things! l've bought my last small five-cent pie, My five-cent milk: And now, goodbye! Goodbye to homework and its worry, Borrowed in haste and scrawled in hurry. Goodbye to cuts, and long detention, And cranky folks I need not mention. Goodbye to jolly late rehearsals, And winter dusk and gay dispersals, And going home, a good job done,- The boys and girls, the wise crack fun. Goodbye to laughing loud and hearty To win an A from a certain party. Goodbye to football, Senior Play, To candy sales and S. G. A. Goodbye to Homerooms, Senior Rings And Washington, and lots of things. Some day we'll say, Those days were heaven, ln dear old l937. We'll think again of Hillside High, And maybe smile, and maybe sigh, But now,-today,-Goodbye, Goodbye!
