Though the struggle to make the school want it and the tight to make it pay for itself are still strong, all murmurs of dropping it are squelched and Hillside's old fighting spirit keeps it breathing. To the Class of '28 and the rest of you, we send our plea- NVork for the Guide Post for Hillside. LITERARY CLUB Modern fiction has penetrated Hillside with the result that a literary club was formed for the purpose of discussing it and reviewing it for publication in the Guide Post. In the line of verse, scansion and poetic forms were given consideration. President .....,...tv..,.l.......,...............,.. .,...r......... GEURNE ROBERTS 34 THE GUIDE POST OF NINETEEN TWENTY-SEVEN Senior Play in the Making Months and months ago, when the world was rosy, and we had reached only the second month of our Senior Year, we faced a crisis of our budding careers, and retired to the Senior room to formulate our plans, to cogitate, and to meditate on the choice of a Senior play. The distinguishing feature of said meeting was the unprecedented calm, order, and quiet that prevailed, for when the ballots were cast, collected, and counted, it was found that on each one was written he same thing- Come Out of the Kitchen. Once again '27 reached a unanimous decision and Come Out of the Kitchen was ado-pted. Try-outs were set for the following Monday QOctober 115. Search as we might, we could find but two existing copies of our newly chosen comedy-drama, and as thirty members of the erstwhile friendly Senior Class intended to try out for parts, efforts to secure books over the week-end resulted in everything but bomb-throwing. On Monday a record-breaking mob turned out for try-outs. Never before had so many seemingly sane students startled the world by revealing desires for declamation. Anyway, the spirit was willing. After a few days of mental anguish for all concerned Mrs. Dubow announced the chosen-Eunice, jane, Claire, Edith, Dot, jack, Bob, Bussie, Lindsay, Woolsey and George. Having chosen a play longer than any of the three preceding ones, and having little more than a month to prepare it, '27 started out under a handicap. The first jolt came when rehearsal days were scheduled. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 3:00 to 11:00 was consecrated to the cause. Our one fear and our one dread was that by the time we had finished practicing the third act we would have forgotten the first! However, to our surprise, our memories did not fail us. 'Twas then that bologna sandwiches, potato chips, tasty cakes, cheese sandwiches fbutter or mustard one cent extral became precious to us. Dot brandished a coffee-pot, and the rest of us fought off starvation. Few who have not had the terrible experience can realize the awful sensation an embryo actor feels when the coach makes him spend three hours on one sentence! Who but the initiated can be melodramatic with a mouthful of peanuts, or Hershey bars? But the afternoon of the dress rehearsal found our courage sinking. About five minutes before the curtain went up, we learned that all our exits and entrances must be changed-but we lived through it. Dress rehearsals were never worse than ours, and after posing for photographers from every newspaper in the country Qand only a sandwich for nourishmentl we started to work all over again. After that, it couldn't go wrong. The 3rd and 4th of December are never to be forgotten, but we can't tell you why, or how. You'd have to see Come Out of the Kitchen as presented by '27 in order to understand how we feel when we live it over in memory. 35 THE GUIQE POST OF NINETEEN TWENTY-SEVEN Class Flower In The Garden Blue Bell ................ ............ Kit Family Man THE GUIDE POST OF NINETEEN TWENTY-SEVEN Last Will and Testament of 1927 We, the members of the Class of '27, fully conscious of our approach- ing scholastic death and possessing as many of our faculties and being in as sane a mind as possible under the circumstances, do, on the 17th day of june, so make and publish herewith, our last will and testament, thereby revoking and making void all former wills and promises made by us at any time. Gur worldly possessions we dispose of in the following manner. To the Seniors who succeed us, we leave our superior attitude, our pull with the faculty and all the privilegesf U we have enjoyed during our sojourn in this, our house of learning. To Mr. Wfoodfield, our Supervising Principal, our sincere thanks for his hearty co-operation and interest. We hope the succeeding classes will feel as much appreciation for his splendid leadership as we have. To Mr. Cox, our principal, we bequeath peace and quiet after four years of '27's chaos. To our New School, we leave the memory of '27, May our errant spirits haunt its halls forever! H The advertisers of the Year Book Staff, Louise, Bussie, Francis and Betsy, unhesitatingly leave their invincible spirit and worn out shoes to anyone who has the courage to be next year's advertisers. To Hymen Yourish, Tom Buzalski's recipe for length. To Hillside's blossoming Romeos, we entrust Kit's and Eddie's fidelity and joint locker in the Senior room. To Edith Smith and Lydia Schubert, Woolsey's and Bussie's nerve in getting out of study halls Qwith consequent noise in the hallsj. To any one who thinks he needs it we donate our ability to dodge lessons, lose homework and bluff the powers that be. To the Sophomores we bequeath words of encouragement, for in our Sophomore days our chances of becoming Seniors were as slim as yours are now. To the dance committee of '28, '29 and '30, Lillian Patton reluctantly disposes of her unsurpassed methods of making punch. No questions will be asked if aforementioned classes develop a taste for tea or coffee. 42 THE GUIDE POST OF NINETEEN TWENTY-SEVEN To her less valiant sisterhood of the underclasses, Edith Compton generously wills her favorite playmates-our mice, including all stray cats. To Virginia Joyce who is constantly in danger of running down, jane Willmot lovingly bequeaths her marathon record for chattering. To Louise Manley, after having seen her picture with the junior Class, Agnes Littlejohn, in an attempt to drive away that frown, makes a present of her dimples. Now smile, Louise. To the Faculty, because of their expressed desires for possessing them, we dedicate all the Senior water-pistols. To Gilbert Chamberlain, to use at his own discretion, Henry Wunder's caveman propensities. ' To Arnold McClow, Frank Poole's aversion to women. To all Senior advisers, Miss McKeever's patience and silent endurance thru years of constant trials and tribulations. To rising politicians, our problems books guaranteed to have been used not more than twice. These are accompanied by our groans on opening them and our bliss in closing them. To the fiunkers who have exhausted their own supply, jack Bradin bequeaths his numerous, workable excuses and his general ability to skin thru. To the general public for its occasional use Bill Berry relinquishes his souvenir towel snitched from the B. F. Hotel. Bill would like to see it added to the others in the boys' shower. Lastly, about to quit these halls forever, we name our sister class l929 as executors of this our last will and testament and do hereby set our seal and signature in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and twenty-seven. The Hillsiders had such an impregnahle defense that at one time the Lindenites passed the hall around for a full minute under their own basket and then the end of the half saved them their efforts to break through the Hillside defense. This victory coming on top of the decisive defeat of Linden by Hillside passers only a few weeks earlier was a great triumph for the Maroon and Gray. HILLSIDE ELIMINATED FROM TOURNAMENT Hillside-21 East Rutherford 24 Making East Rutherford, conquerors of Ridgefield Park tlast years championsl, light for every point, the Hillside High finally lost to the upstaters March Sth, at Shanley Gym. The East Rutherford quintet entered the fray Certain of winning by at least 30 points, but were scared stiff when in the first few minutes of play theHillside passers ran off three plays 64 THE GUIDE POST OF NINETEEN TWENTY-SEVEN for 6 points. During the iirst three quarters Hillside was the aggressor and their opponents the defenders. In the last period the team from upstate worked to break the Hillside defense systematically and because of more experience managed to sink enough counters to win by the sweat of their brows. EDVVARD ZILAHY fEDDIE, Right Guard Eddie upheld the good reputation which he established last year. When he gritted his teeth or picked a scrap the team would take on radiated energy and fight the harder. THOMAS BUZALSKI CTOM or Surry , C enter Tom, the tallest member on the team found it quite easy to outjump his oppon- ents. He held the pivot position and had to be a fast player to cover all the court which is required of a center. HERBERT ZTMMERMAN CHERMEJ ' Right Guard Although not a regular, Herbie dis- played enough basketball ability to be- come a valuable substitute when one of the regulars was taken out of the game. ERIC JOHNSON Junior Basketball Regulars 66 THE GUIDE POST OF NINETEEN TWENTY-SEVEN Basketball Hillside+25 Alumni-16 The Hillside High quintet won its lirst game of the season when it defeated the Alumni of '26 in their annual clash. Hillside-1 9 Pingry-1 4 The Hillside High Varsity passers in their second appearance of the season meted out defeat to the snappy Pingry live on the local court. Hillside-7 Linden-1 5 The Hillside High Varsity basketball team received an unexpected set- back when defeated by Linden, one of Union Counties strongest teams. But, we shall meet them again later in the season. Hillside-16 Harrison-10 The Hillside High quintet defeated the strong Harrison High five on Friday night, the 14th, at the Harrison court, by a spectacular rally in the third and fourth quarters. The Hillsiders seemed to make the baskets when absolutely necessary. Both teams' defense was working to perfection in the first half but in the third and last quarter the Harrison defense was broken up. Hillside-18 Roselle Park-32 The Hillside High passers were defeated on the 19th of january by Roselle Park, at the Park's Court. The Park team, although scoring 32 points in three quarters, had a battle on their hands during their stay and it was only their uncanny skill to sink baskets from the center and all angles of the court that enabled them to win. The team at no time was relayed in their playing and were driving their opponents at top speed throughout the contest. HillSid?2o Roselle-12 In a fast, hard game featured by rallies the Hillside High basketball passers recorded its fourth win of the season by a victory over the Roselle High basketeers, at the Roselle court. The Hillside defense was more than noticeable on this occasion but their offensive passing was weak. Hillside-22 Plainfield-26 In a fast contest at the Plainfield court the Hillside High basketeers dropped a game to the Plainfield High quintet, mainly because of Plain- lield's rally in the third period. The Hillsiders obtained an early lead which they held throughout the half but Plainfield rallied in the third quarter, tied the score and tiled a substantial score to win. Hillside--l l Westfield-l 7 The Westfield High basketball passers defeated the Hillside High quintet in a speedy battle featured by a low score and close guarding. Hillside-19 Dover-14 Showing a complete reversal of form the Hillside High quintet turned back the crack Dover High five. The team gained an early lead which they held until the third quarter, when Dover rallied and tied the score. How- 67 THE GUIDE PGST OF NINETEEN TWENTY-SEVEN ever, Captain Winters pulled his team out of the hole in the last minutes of that same quarter by sinking a good field goal and two fouls. This victory was sweet revenge for Hillside, Dover having eliminated them in their second game of the State Tournament last year. The teamwork of Hillside was very much in evidence. Hillside-17 South Side-21 With a spirit of never say die the Hillside High five fought gamely against the South Side basketeers only to lose out in the last half, at the South Side court. The Hillsiders gave the South Side team a fight all the way and the Newarkers had to exert themselves to win. The team excelled in its passwork and guarding and it was only the superior shooting of the South Siders that enabled them to come out on top. Hillside-20 Roselle-1 2 Playing with a fine showing of speed and passwork the Hillside High quintet downed the Roselle High five at the local court. The teams set off at a fast gait for the first half, but towards the end of the game the Roselle team seemed played out, and Hillside, playing the same steady game, took the lead and held it. A new star unearthed, DeRose, who entered the game at the beginning of the second half, was the star of the game with his passwork and shooting. Hillside--17 Roselle Park-27 The Hillside Varsity basketball quintet was defeated by the leading contenders for the Union County League Championship. The Parkers expected to give the Hillside team a duplicate drubbing as they did in the lirst encounter, but playing off their box court they found the going harder. However, they played well and defeated the Hillside passers. Hillside-34 Linden-29 The Hillside High passers traveled to Linden Friday night, Feb. 18. The Lindenites, overflowing with confidence, expected to hand the Hillside Varsity the hardest defeat they ever encountered, but confidence has not won a game for any team. Hillside displayed a fast and defensive game, making up for the defeat which Linden gave Hillside earlier in the season. Hillside-19 Bloomfield Seminary-17 The Hillside basketball representatives, playing out of their class, defeated the heavy Seminary quintet Monday evening, Feb. 21. It may be remembered that the Seminary passers defeated Hillside by the same score last year. Hillside-1 3 Harrison-1 5 The Harrison quintet defeated the Hillside passers on their own court. This game was a slow but strong defensive one. Hillside-1 5 Somerville-l 9 The Hillside Varsity basketball team motored to Somerville and was defeated by the strong Somerset County passers. The teams did not show a great amount of shooting ability. The Hillside quintet of next year will meet the Somerville team on their home court. 68 THE GUIDE POST OF NINETEEN TVVENTY-SILVEN Girls Basketball Team Violet Hall, g., Capt. QTHE GUIDE POST OF NINETEEN TWVENTY-SEVEN Track During the past years track has been a minor activity of Hillside High. Track athletes have shown a large amount of enthusiasm in previous years in representing the school on the field. When candidates for track were called there were not many who desired or could perform in the activity. This was due to the graduation of the Classes of '25 and '26 when the best runners Hillside had, left us. The few boys who remain will represent Hillside in the Union Countyand State Meets. However, '27 is proud of Tom Buzalski's high jump record and of the fact that he won the State Championship in '25, ' As The Guidepost of the Class of 1927 goes to press it gives to the track team of the following years its sincere wishes and desires to see some day that Track will be a major sport in Hillside High. The High School annexed the first two league gamesg the first at Roselle by 8455 the second at Roselle Park 8-6. ln the next three League games Hillside hit a batting slump and dropped the games to Summit, Rahway and VVestfield. Coming out of their slump the team came back to batter into submission the champion team from Linden, being the first team to beat them in two years. There is sound advice in this couplet. lt means that if youth, robust and capable, were to acquire protection thus early in life, the possible reverses of old age would be provided against. If this is not done, the old man may find himself unable to struggle against adversity, with no possession at his com- mand other than vain and valueless regrets. There is one advantage in acquiring an Endowment Life Insurance Policy as early as possible which is almost as important as the benefit to be gained when it matures. It is in youth that the maximum of protection may be had for the lowest cost. .-Isle Your Prudential Man About This or You May ll rite Direct to The Home Ojire. wav., 9 ,g N The Prudential 5 f'!lElIlf'j i lnsurance Company of America x 'lhiiiiiiii' 4 Enwuzu D.
