EDITORIAL A hillsdale girl is indeed a unique being. Her presence is readily discernible in any crowd by her vaguely green7 extremely arty Attractive Frock. She is oc- casionally identified by the personalized candy bars, stationery, pens7 and other trinkets she peddles for the sake of class funds. Her allegiance to her tribe is further displayed by a professed adherence to a Social Code of the noblest moral aspirations. More subtle as evidence, but perhaps equally characteristic of her, is the rigid, vertical tension that seizes her spine at the very utterance of the word iipostureh or the sudden silence in places of study or assembly evoked in her by the thought of iihonor. These, and other such idiosyncracies, however, are but minor aspects of the Hillsdale syndrome. They are merely the outward and visible signs of a phenomenon whose most important and baffling trait is that none of its specimens hehave-or even try to behaveealike. Hillsdale students will never be accurately classified, for the sum of their experience tends to disprove all the old rules of mass psychology without leading to any new ones. Many ambitious observers have traced their general appearance through the years in search of some pattern of development, but the graphic lines have invariably run off the page in all directions. Just as a definite trend of thought would seem to appear on the chart, the analyst would find to his horror that the line continued only to bend into a beautifully whimsical curve, never again to be repeated. What, then, is this Hillsdale which can nourish two hundred girls with the same formula of learning, recreation, activities, and guidance and then come up with two hundred individualists? To describe it in a book or a paragraph would be to violate all laws of logic and coherency, for the report would be charged with paradox. Hillsdale is a sense of unity among independent minds. It is tradition sustained by innovation. It is friendship between student and faculty fostered by mutual respect. In the end, one can only revert to the familiar descriptions of the tunics and narrations of student life, in the hope that the spark within each girl that is dis- tinCtly Hillsdale may somehow be grasped along with the rest. We, the Annual Board, have looked at Hillsdale with much pride and a little awe as we sought to express in this yearbook the meaning it holds for all of us. DEDICATION MISS DORIS SHELLBERG Some people achieve excellence through long and devoted hours of work and study; in others it exists as the natural state of a gifted mind. When these are combined in one person as is the case with Miss Shellberg wonderf1i1 things begin to happen. The Harvest Fair becomes a possibility; the Miracle Play takes on a fuller splendor; every school project is given diligent and creative attention. To those of us who have known Miss Shellberg in art classes, her vast knowledge and understanding of her subject have been a source of growing inspiration. Her incalculable patience and skillful guidance have pulled us successfully through countless crises where either hard work or artistic advice have been factors. It is with much gratitude and affection that we, the Class of 1962, dedicate our annual to Miss Doris Shellberg. '
