WMQVIEMM fy NX, X 5 4 Principal if f Principal's Message Ray cs. Amee After four years we have finally put into words a written philosophy of Hillsdale High School. A resume of this philosophy states: We believe that each Hillsdale High School student is worthy of the continuous dedicated efforts of the total school staff to help him attain maximum personal achievement-mentally, morally, socially and physically to prepare him for citizen- ship in our rapidly changing world. These may seem like high sounding words but they do describe the things we stand for and state the basic principles upon which our school has been founded. This statement is a guarantee to each of our students that the total resources of the school are available to him and also implies that each student has a personal obligation to take advantage of his opportunity and to accept the educational challenge of our school. As upper classmen, our Junior year was an active one under the leadership of Neil Johnson, president, Don Vossler, vice president, Cynthia Moore, secretary, and Pat McHugh, treasurer. Don Vossler, Jim Ekedal, Betty Fletcher, and Eric Wenberg were selected as our spring officers After receiving our class r' . ings, we began at once a money-raising program to raise funds for our Junior Prom, by selling concessions at the Serra and C h' f ' apuc mo ootball games. On May 15, 1959, our Junior Prom, Moonglow, was presented. At the end of the year, we were ready for our new responsibilities as Seniors and leaders of Hillsdal H' h S h e lg c ool. The fall semester of 1959 began, and the Class of 1960 was busy planning our first activity of the S ' B year, enior ow Day. Everyone had a good time as the Freshmen bowed and scraped to the Seniors, saying: Hail, Mighty Senior. Kangaroo Court was held the following day and many a Fre h h d f ' , s man a ear in his heart. After the graduation ceremonies and when the last strain of Pump and Circum t , s ance was over, we hurried to our all night party where we danced, played games, and talked until dawn when breakfast was d. 0 h' ' serve n t is night, we paused and remembered the wonderful years we had spent here. We felt sad at leaving Hillsdale, but as we looked toward the future we eagerly stepped forward to meet all that life might offer to each of us, confident that th k I ' ' e now edge we gained here and the friends we made, 1? His seventh and eighth grade years were spent at Borel Junior High School. ln the fall of 1956, Ron entered Hillsdale High School where he became an honor student. Ron liked people of all ages. He was a quiet, serious boy, and he was well liked by both his teachers and fellow students. Ron's hobbies included coin-collecting and the restoration of an old Model A automobile. Primarily an outdoor boy, Ron was very much interested in athletics. At Hillsdale, he participated in basketball and track in which he held the record for the shot putt event in the B divisioru On the night of November 11, 1959, Ron was seriously injured in an automobile accident on La Honda Road in Woodside. Despite a heroic battle for life, Ron passed away on Thursday, December 17, 1959. I . ed The 1959 Boys' State was one of the most pleasurable and educative experiences in my life. Everything started when a group of boys from this area arrived at the Sacramento State Fair Grounds on a scorching 110 degrees Saturday afternoon. Our group and preceding groups, which included boys from everywhere in the state, were then assigned to a party leither Federalist or Whigl and then to one of seven counties, each of which comprised three cities. I became a Federalist, residing in the County of Harelson, City of Stanford. From Sunday to Thursday, elections for city, county, and state officials were held much in the manner of our student body elections with the exception of much more enthusiasm, vigorous campaigning, which included impromptu speeches and demon- strations, and 1002 voting. I was elected Deputy County Sheriff and played a minor role in the prosecution of a young San Francisco delinquent caught in the act of Boys' State was not all work as it became evident when party spirit ran overboard with the use of fire hoses and water balloons. Soon there were padlocks on the hoses and two laps around the horse track if caught with any balloons. On Thursday afternoon we all left the fair grounds and traveled by bus to the Capitol Building. Most of the f major offices in the building were open to us, and the Boys' State Senate and Assembly Mike Heffernan WO! held sessions in the chambers normally occupied by the California legislature. The Boys' State Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and other important state officials were installed at the Capitol. During the course of the week there was a talk from a West Point Cadet, a Boys' State talent show and a very professional talent show presented by Sacramento High School. Girls' State is more than learning the why's of California's state, county and city government-it also means friendships and fun. Mixed in with learning civics and meeting new, life-long friends, were numerous activities, ranging from a Girls' State variety show to a tour of the State Capitol and visit with Governor Brown to the final parties. For the past few years California Girls' State has been held at the Davis Campus of the University of California. This gave us an excellent preview of college life, for we slept in dorms, ate in a college dining hall, and attended lectures and meetings in college classrooms. Girls' State is basically a lesson in Americanism. It is calculated to send 422 girls away as better United States citizens-and it does. The sponsoring unit, the American Legion Auxiliary, has invented a unique method for teaching civics to us, by practicing in reality what we would ordinarily read in our school textbooks. Each morning we attended a lecture explaining some phase of government. During that week, we put our learning to practical application by holding elections for numerous government posts. The most exciting were the State elections, culminating at the governor's post lthis girl went to Washington, D.C. for a weekl. We were split into two political parties, Whigs and Tories, in which we made posters and held conventions and demonstrations and rallies. Never have I seen such spirit! Personal experiences will always stay with me, whether embarrassing, exciting, or moving. I was elected City Treasurer, Court Reporter, and Clerk of the Senate. By relating my experiences, I hope I have shown you that I am proud to have been HilIsdale's first representative to Girls' State, the first of many. Carol Martin 59 I I 4 X xE if 1 Pete Fagotfi Marty Nilssen , Giorgio Brida gazeiqn cfxchange Students Marty Nilssen Rjukun, a deep valley in Norway, sent Hillsdale a pretty exchange student, Anne Marthe Nilssen. Marthe, as we called her, lived with Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Herman and her sister, Sue, while she attended Hillsdale. Marthe found her academics to be much easier at Hillsdale than at home, and she admited that she enjoyed relaxing somewhat for a year. But she still thought the more difficult Norwegian system to be more advantageous. Marthe experienced tasting many American foods that were new to her. Once Mr. Herman asked Marthe how many hamburgers she would like. Marthe, not knowing what a hamburger was, replied, Three ! When a surprised Mr. Herman served Marthe the hamburgers she proceeded to eat them open-face with a knife and fork! Marthe said that American and Norwegian students differ only in that American students are more independent. She believes that our hopes, efforts and desires are basically the same, . ' Pete Fagotti if ff if Caviar for breakfast! Sound rather unusual? Pete Fagottl Hillsdales exchange student to Sweden last summer, not only had caviar, but often two other types of fish included in his daily breakfast menu. Pete tells us that food in Sweden is very whole- some and non-greasy. Milk, bread and cheese are to the Swedish people as hamburgers and milkshakes are to Americans. Strawberries and whipped cream are a favorite dessert. Before visiting Sweden, Pete had the impression that it was not too advanced, but he was quite surprised. The Rudberg's, Pete's family, were a little better than average Swedish family, and they owned, among other appliances, a television, an automobile and a washing machine. Generally speaking, Pete says, Sweden is fairly modern and very clean-they have respect for their country. Traveling has added many new ideas to his knowledge, but more than anything else, Pete has become aware of this one fact: There are all types of people every- where. Giogio Brida Milano, ltaly, is the home of Hillsdale's other exchange student. Giorgio Brida lived with the Thiltgen family during his stay in San Mateo. George, as he preferred to be called, discovered quite a difference between the school system in Italy and the system practiced at Hillsdale. He found that his studies were not as difficult, so he had more time to relax. Relations between students and teachers are more formal in ltaly, and the boys must wear suits and ties to school. Teachers, instead of students, change rooms between classes. George said that the American system appealed more to him as a student. George was quite interested in sports. He avidly pursued cycling, motor racing, skiing, and swimming. He played the accordion quite well and enjoyed dancing. George said that he enjoyed his year at Hillsdale, and we enjoyed knowing him. Perhaps, if he realizes his hope to be an electronics engineer, he will once again visit us in San Mateo. Of great importance to the Class of '61 was the issuance of class rings. A sequence of events such as the Junior Brunch, Lunch Sale and the 'lBig Game Skit previous to the Cap game, proved highly successful. Major events and decisions occupied the time of the Junior Council and its advisor, Mrs. Thelma Greene, at their bi-weekly meetings. From their efforts emerged the much anticipated Junior Prom. This event sealed the activities for the year and brought about the realization that the Senior Reign is but three months hence. Spring Council ROW 1: Annette Bulkley, Eileen lscoff, Sherry Lawrence. Sophomore Class The Sophomores opened the fall semester with the annual Frosh-Soph Fun Night entitled Knight Life. The new council was then elected and its big job was the class skit for the Capuchino Rally, which tied for first place, bringing in 38.00. The Sophomore Class also ran the Capuchino concession at the Thanksgiving Day Game, the total profits of which went to the Ron Arrillaga Fund. Also sponsored by this class was a concession in January for one of Hillsdale's league basketball games. Plans were then made and carried out for an all-school dance with an Hawaiian Theme-a fine conclusion to a successful year! Freshman Class This fall of '59, four hundred students entered Hillsdale with a series of activities planned for them which included the Black and White Ball and a Frosh-Soph Fun Night. The serfs took part in the annual Senior Bow Day which proved to be quite successful. A few were summoned to Kangaroo Court in which.Senior boys passed iudgment and pronounced sentence. Most participants suffered nothing more than sore backs. They also participated with sympathetic interest in the AFS Candle Sale for the benefit of the Ron Arrillaga Fund. During the spring semester the Freshman Class completed the work on their constitution, and to round off the year, they hosted the Sophomores at a fun night. ,ff o Q 0 I ffl!! ,lf ROW 1: Paul Kumli, Alan Sturm, ROW 21 Lynnea Saysette, loanna Pool, Betty Heimstadt, Carol Ann Goerss, Nlr. To start off the musical activities, the A Cappella Choir went to Cal. for the traditional morning of song, after which they were guests of the University at the football game. Preparing for the Ron Arrillaga Christmas Benefit and perfecting music for the Olympics took up the remainder of the first semester. The trip to Squaw Valley was truly a memorable one for the A Cappella Choir. Our Orchestra was also very active. Many of its members were present at the District Festival and the entire organization took part in both the Spring Concert and the Music Festival. Early this spring, the string orchestra presented a program and demonstration at San Jose State College. Hillsdale has much to be proud of in these fine musical groups and their outstand- ing director. ozchestza next JOHN PHILIP SOUSA AWARD .1 CHOIR OUTSTANDING AWARD - CHORUS Uttar- VIQIII Q' Ig at ' 'Z K 1 ROW 3: Ginny Fanucci, Kris Cavalli, Garyette Rakestraw, Gail Duncan, Ron Peters, Ed Davis, Rick Nelson, John White, Sandy Ferrin, Betty Dunsmore, Pam Grove. 'I3an2s mazck an? .swing with ,Duke Mr. Anthony Duke Campagna proved himself once more Hthe World's greatest band director during the 1959-60 Band Season. Through enthusiastic efforts, the Advanced Band traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to display their talents to several audi- ences. This project, along with the Stanford Band Day and the annual Spring Concert, highlighted the year. Of great importance to the musicians was the Christmas Benefit Program for Ron Arrillaga. The Girls' Chorus and Intermediate Band displayed the results of their year's work at the Spring Concert. Swingin' strains of the Hillsdale Dance Band were heard at several interschool activities. Judging by this year's excellent work, Duke looks forward to an equally successful '60-'61 season. 93 DANCE BAND , LACE?- Hedmaw Digita Hints. Bob -U-GSW' . nnS0 ' ,PW me, Nixeignflenw Q Q 00 Nm! THE GLASS MENAGERIE Tennessee Williams' immortal The Glass Menagerie will go down in Hillsdale's history as one of its greatest productions. The play was set to the weird, enchanting music first recorded for the Broadway production. As the curtain opens, the audience is introduced to the Wingfield family-a family that lives in dreams of the future and memories of the past. There are four members of the Wingfield family: Amanda, the domineering mother, Tom, the son, who yearned to follow in his father's footsteps, Laura, a girl whose glass animal collection was her life, and Papa , whose only appearance is in a photograph on the wall. Tom described his father by saying, He was a telephone man who fell in love with long distance. As the play proceeds, we find Amanda, portrayed by Linda Speicher, desperately trying to find happiness for her daughter, Laura, played by Sharon Turner. Amanda succeeds in forcing Tom, portrayed by lim Woolsey, to bring home one of his warehouse friends to get acquainted with Laura. Very soon, Rick Houston, the gentleman caller, finds himself walking into the mother's marriage trap. Tom tries to keep things light, but is unsuccessful. The play ends on a tragic note. Laura, after learning that the gentleman with whom she has fallen in love is already engaged to be married, sinks back into her world of imaginative dreams and fragile animals. THE CAT AND THE CANARY An old maniac who thinks he's a cat, secret panels in which the unknown lurks, and accusations of insanity provided blood-curdling sus- pense for the audience that viewed The Cat and the Canary, April land 2. In the melodramatic mood of the play, the surviving relatives of the late Cyrus Canby West met in the old and musty Glencliff Manor to learn the identity of the next heir. As they sat in suspense, the old family lawyer, Roger Crosley, played by Jed Winters, dramatically announced the heir by saying, I, Cyrus Canby West, do declare as the sole heir to all my money, bonds, and estate, my descendant, man or woman, who bears the surname of West. Harry Blythe, played by Gordon Babcock, merely shrugged in his cynical manner. Charlie Wilder, played by John White, smiled the congratulations that his outgoing personality demanded. Cicily Young, portrayed by Sandy Lemon, pouted in her typical dumb- blond manner. Elissa Guardino as Susan Silsby accepted the results with her acid temper. Paul Jones, played by Don Vossler, vigorously conveyed his congratulations to Annabelle West, played by Jill Shipstad, who was in a state of excitement over her good fortune. The play was heightened by the African voodoo housekeeper, played by Linda Speicher, a believer in spirits and demons: an asylum keeper, Larry Main, whose news of an escaped maniac put the entire household into a panic: and Dr. Patterson, played by Jim Gaddis, who provided a dramatic moment when he appeared in the midst of one of the most suspenseful scenes of The Cat and the Canary. The play was directed with imagination and skill by Mr. Donald Ralston and his student director, Sharon Turner. S I R C t A--F' Jolly Allen E D J g-W, Each year the Freshmen have the job of bringing Sir Cedric to life. As the story goes, while the school was under construction, the body of a knight was R found embedded in tar underneath the ground. The body was taken to Stanford Institute to be studied. ' - It was decided that school spirit was the only thing I to bring it back to life. Ever since then, Sir Cedric has had to be awakened from his sleep by the incoming Freshman class at the beginning of each school year. C To date none of the classes have failed in their task. Queen Reign on .Qmgaoztant foes Ron Peters Wanda Vetica On the eve of the most important football game of the season with Hillsdale's traditional rivals, the Capuchino Mustangs, one ot the seven Grid Queen candidates, nominated by the boys on the team, was crowned. Earlier that week, the girls had been intro- duced at a noon rally in the great court, and it had been evident even then that the race was going to be very close. The crowd at the Thanksgiving Day Game Rally-Dance held its breath as Jim Ekedal, student body president and center for the Knights, read the results. Although briefly disappointed, the six lovely princesses, Bonnie Beckstrom, Linda Hense, Joan Marr, Cynthia Moore, Kim Morgan and Karen Schlotthauer, were genuinely happy to see the striking brunette, Wanda Vetica, crowned Grid Queen for the 1959 season by captain Ron Peters. Some of Wanda's royalty must have rubbed off on Ron, for it was less than a month later that he was crowned King of the A.G.S. formal, Angilique, by presi- dent Julie Evanson. Each girl purchasing a ticket to the dance was entitled to vote for her favorite Senior boy. The A.G.S. presented Ron's date, Pat Ahlf, with a lovely bouquet to highlight a memorable evening. The season, however, got off to a slow start with the loss of the practice games. ln conference play they were undefeated until encountering Burlingame. From that time on the team was out of contention even though they had the spirit to win. After this narrow loss to Burlingame, Hillsdale's Varsity went on to win a close victory over Mills. The spirit to win was greatly influenced by the outstanding leadership of Coach Collin and the individual performances of the players. Ron Peters proved distinctive in ability and was elected Most Valuable Player of the Year. However, the whole team showed Hillsdale a splendid performance, and all members were deserving of individual distinction. 1 1 i 1 larry Pentek Ron Peters Bill Price Tom Mayer Chuck Alderman Bill Moats Al Benner Jim Ekedal Ev Stinson Dennie Harris Steve Klenk Je, . x. vi-fi 174-is J 25.1, si, .W . 1 sig-is ifsggeisiif . f ' if . Although the team lacked sufficient height to move up any further in league standings, they finished in the first division and were credited with having the best defensive team in the league. Seniors Hank Moritz and Bill Price, named to the all-league team along with Mike Mattos, did an outstanding job. Bill Price was elected team captain for the year. Even though he was not at full strength due to a shoulder separation, Bill was considered the finest playmaker in the league. He scored well and was an adept rebounder for his height. Hank Moritz led the team in scoring while Terry Mctluarrie, Randy Bowles, and Denis France did a master portion of rebounding. All things considered, it was a successful year, and it may be more promising next year since the team was made up of many sophomores and juniors. 122 T959 Scoreboard Hillsdale 0PPOnent 3l San Mateo 34 36 Jefferson 37 33 Wesfmoor 30 53 South San Francisco 45 35 Burlingame 33 45 Mills 34 39 Capuchino 32 39 Jefterson 26 36 San Mateo 43 49 South San Francisco 22 33 Westmoor 36 29 Mills 30 59 Burlingame 47 33 Capuchino 40 1959 Scoreboard Hillsdale Opponent 31 San Mateo 28 31 Jefterson 34 62 Westmoor 30 42 South San Francisco 36 44 Burlingame 32 34 Mills 38 29 Capuchino 30 34 Jefferson 38 23 San Mateo 34 25 South San Francisco 35 51 Westmoor 39 43 Mills 42 33 Burlingame 27 33 Capuchino 44 143 140 117 101 Edward Otto ROW 1: Jeff Haney, Jay Messick, Gordon Webb. Throughout the year, Hillsdale offers a choice of eight different sports. The girls meet one or two days a week, after school. The program for each sport offers days of practice, games between intramural teams, and playdays'l, where teams based on skill meet other schools. Advan- tages offered by pIaydays are chances to see other schools, and acquire friends not connected with their own school. While participating in the activity, the girls are earning a G.A.A. emblem. The next and highest award is a block H. After a girl acquires 50 points, a G.A.A. emblem is awarded: an additional 40 points enables a girl to obtain a block H. Ten points are awarded in each sport if the girl attends 751, of the practices and games. If a girl is elected manager of a sport, she earns 10 more points. Sport pins are awarded to win- ning teams of intramural play. All awards are given at a party, which concludes the sports season. Sports BLOCK MEMBERS ROW 1: Sandra Smith.
