Ingrid Brudern -,4z'ZaaZ6a ' ' A certain amount of irony makes a person think. This is the belief of Ingrid Brudern, this year's foreign exchange student. Here in America, it is possible to broaden one's ideas by having friendly debates with teachers and students, in Germany this is not always true. Ingrid was born in the Communist Sector of Berlin but grew up in Hamburg. Until she came to Hillsdale, Ingrid attended Klosterschule. The first thing that impressed her about Hillsdale was its large size and modern architecture, quite different from the ivy-covered brick walls of Klosterschule. Also, German students do not always enioy school because of the pressures placed upon them, but in the United States, schools, with all their activities are enioyable Germany's attitude toward politics is more intense than that of the United States that is they take a greater interest in their government But in turn our participation and enthusiasm for sports is much more than Germany s When Ingrid returns to her home we hope that she will carry with her memories as pleasant as we will have of her ic Jim Creighton Sour cream and Bratwurst Sound delicious? ln Germany this is one of the most popular meals according to Jim Creighton our first A F S student Jim lived in Germany for three months last summer as part of Hillsdale High s Foreign Exchange program The first thing you notice in Germany is the sameness of Europe and America but you also realize that the people are German and not Ameri can says Jim Among the various first impressions is the knowledge that not many miles from where you are about l OOO persons a day are escap ing from East Germany quite different from America ln Jim s words the purpose of the Foreign Exchange program is for the student to learn and share the knowledge of other peoples and places he has gained through his trip among these are these first impressions Judging from the success of the Foreign Exchange program this year this purpose has been achieved However the question has been posed whether this program can accom plush even more by extending it for a longer time to give the American student a chance to not only learn but to better know and understand the attitudes of the people , .
