This is the belief of Ingrid Brudern, this year's foreign exchange student. Here in America, it is possible to broaden one's ideas by having friendly debates with teachers and students, in Germany this is not always true. Ingrid was born in the Communist Sector of Berlin but grew up in Hamburg. Until she came to Hillsdale, Ingrid attended Klosterschule. The first thing that impressed her about Hillsdale was its large size and modern architecture, quite different from the ivy-covered brick walls of Klosterschule. Also, German students do not always enioy school because of the pressures placed upon them, but in the United States, schools, with all their activities are enioyable Germany's attitude toward politics is more intense than that of the United States that is they take a greater interest in their government But in turn our participation and enthusiasm for sports is much more than Germany s When Ingrid returns to her home we hope that she will carry with her memories as pleasant as we will have of her ic Jim Creighton Sour cream and Bratwurst Sound delicious? ln Germany this is one of the most popular meals according to Jim Creighton our first A F S student Jim lived in Germany for three months last summer as part of Hillsdale High s Foreign Exchange program The first thing you notice in Germany is the sameness of Europe and America but you also realize that the people are German and not Ameri can says Jim Among the various first impressions is the knowledge that not many miles from where you are about l OOO persons a day are escap ing from East Germany quite different from America ln Jim s words the purpose of the Foreign Exchange program is for the student to learn and share the knowledge of other peoples and places he has gained through his trip among these are these first impressions Judging from the success of the Foreign Exchange program this year this purpose has been achieved However the question has been posed whether this program can accom plush even more by extending it for a longer time to give the American student a chance to not only learn but to better know and understand the attitudes of the people , . The orchestra, which had members sent to the Northern California Honor Organization, played for the two term plays, They also went to the Music Festival Contest which was held at San Jose State, where they received honors. The choirs made the Spring Concert and Christmas Program memorable productions. The A Capella Choir went to the University of California for a Fall Choir Day and there they were guests at a football game. They sang for the San Mateo Women's Club at the Elks Club. They also went to the College of Pacific for a singing festival. The band that was seen marching on the football Held during halftimes also marched on Stanfords' field during a halftime for the Band Day. Our band was the only one in this district to get a superior marking when they traveled to the University of California where they participated in competition. Our Dance Band, which practiced on their own time, played for school dances as well as for community activities. We owe a great deal of thanks to the Music Department and the directors. They have represented us well in the community by their sensational performances in all fields of music. lxed Chorus ffl M out ,U Row one L to R Judy Smith Linda Khoury Joyce Hanson Shiela Carlson Vera Ewers Patricia Brown Sandra Bressler Penny Gualeo JanetMiller Row two LtoR Sandra Hudson Alice Karlela Virginia Fanucci Vicky Suchorski Sandy Winberg Virginia Swindelle Pat Weber Diane Ahlf Bonnie Simon Amy Jones Rodney Ellington Diane Levir Row three L to R Julie Evanson Patricia Luddy Carol Thomas Carol Schoger Lynn Johnson Sue Lunsford Sue Hitchcock Peggy Thomas Barbara Burner Marilyn Prows Billy Dunsmuir Margaret Davis Row four L to R Gene McAdon Dave Smith Ed Holland Mike Perry Mike Billings Dave Hylen John White Tom Davis Harold Lewis Gary Schultz Gary Wolfe Row one, L to R Sharon Burney Pam Watts Paulette Purkett Pat Portman Judith Cain Sharon Haaker Joan Chaffee, LaVerna Ewers, Dawn Buehler, Melinda Suoboda, Sharon Graziano, Karen Cohen Row two, L to R Pat Gastman, Sandra Bruzzon, Sandra Kaarlela, Beverly Freeman, Karen Wilson, Kris Cavalli, Maria Jimenez, Lenlani Lambertz, Sandy Storey, Karen Hartley, Sue Allen. K' indicates Varsity Teamj Peninsula League Champions! These were the words that were echoed by the Hillsdale Varsity Football Team, after their victory over Capuchino on Thanksgiving Day. Peninsula League Champions! These were the words that flared up throughout the gallery of Hillsdale rooters. These were the words that sent this gallery home in a trance of ioy and pride. But what led up to this, the greatest moment of Hillsdale's short history? lt all started with three pre-season losses, but even these couldn't hold back the fighting Knights of Hills- dale. When Hillsdale met the favored Burlingame Panthers, the Knights walked oft with a hard fought 6 to 0 victory. Next we rolled over a stubborn Jefterson team, finally winning 21-19. With two victories, Hills- dale iourneyed to Soudt San Francisco to win another close, hard fought game, 13-12. Liking nothing better than to knock over Hillsdale, San Mateo outplayed the tighting Knights, but was on the short end of a 14-7 score. Hillsdale, embittered by the near loss to San Mateo, trampled the Rams of Westmoor 45-19. As in previous meetings, the Hillsdale-Capuchino game was the crucial game of the year. Would Hills- dale be lone or tri-holder of the Peninsula League Crown? Would it be Turkey or Crown? When the hnal gun sounded, the scoreboard showed the superior Knights the best in the league, with a glorious 26-14 victory over the Mustangs of Capuchino. These were the six games that led Hillsdale to its first varsity football championship. Congratulations, Peninsula League Champions! Var ily Coach ofthe Year-Frank Collin Football Coach ot the Year! This was the honor bestowed upon Hillsdale's Frank Collin by Peninsula Sports Writers. He coached the Knights to their first Varsity Football Champion- ship.
