The Hillsdale Knights were pre-season favorites to tinish last in the newly organized Penninsula Athletic League. The Knights however, led by three re- turning veterans, Len Nicholson, Joe Moriarty and Keith Mattos finished the i957 season with a 6-win, 3-loss record and third place in the league standings. We started the season rolling by stopping Tamalpais Z7-0. Our first reel test came with Serra, our next door neighbor. who was hvonotized bv the throwing arm ot Mattos and the brilliant catching by Gil Cyester and Haven Kolls. Our most disappointing loss of the season followed, when we gave up the ball to Y -- Burlingame on the two yard line, losing in the rain I3-7. Jefferson passed to defeat us 24-I4. By mid-season the Knights suddenly came to lite. Dick Strobel iniured since the beginning of the season returned to the lineup and his speed coupled with good team effort saw the Knights win four straight games over Willow Glen, South City, San Mateo and Westmoor. The Thanksgiving Day game saw Captains Len Nich- olson, Dick Nichol, and Deane Kemper lead us into play against Capuchino at San Mateo field. The Knights fought their hearts out in the first half, holding the championship Mustangs to a 2-0 halt-time score. In the second half Caps overwhelming speed and size won out, the tinal score being 22-0. High light of the game was Dick Strebel's called back 80 yard kick off return to a touchdown. Coaches Collin, MacGraw and Therkelsen are look- ing forward to a fine season next year with a veteran loaded team returning. Coach Collin sends in Deane Kemper . . 80
