LlJ I'lel U10 In 1918 the Turner Cup award was started by Ray A. Turner who had been an agriculture teacher here at HHS for eight years. Mr. Turner, who is now residing in Washington, D. C. , as Federal Representative Club Leader, began the Turner Cup award to promote good citizenship and it has been carried on ever since. The Cup is an award given to a Senior student each year at graduation exercises to promote good scholarship. The student is selected by the High School faculty on the basis of his value to the school and its activities during four years of high school. Consideration is taken of the student's scholarship and citizenship as well. A certificate has been given as the syrnbol of honor since the cup could hold no more names. These people have had the honor bestowed upon them during the years: 1918 1919 1920 1921 1922 1923 1924 1925 1926 1927 1928 1929 1930 1931 1932 1933 1934 1935 1936 1937 Bert Stoll Bert Stoll Gertrude Schmitt Asher Schmitt Isabel Aldrich Joe Cascarelli Beulah Nichols Charles Payne John Meighan John May Doris Buell Charles Sweeney John Isbell Harold Moore Ola Gelzer Gerald Duryea Kenneth Bingham Virginia Foulke Robert Wheaton Hester Myers 1938 1939 1940 1941 1942 1943 1944 1945 1946 1947 1948 1949 1950 1951 1952 1953 Robert Warren Marion Smith Wayne Wilcox Martha Bishop William Friedrichs Con Gernrnill C. This year the Junior Class presented Eastward In Eden. The play was one of the top ten plays of 1946-47. It was placed second only to A Streetcar Named Desire , It was staged two nights: April ninth and tenth. The play was the love life of the poetess Emily Dickinson. Miss Dickinson fell in love with Dr. Charles Wadsworth who was a minister and already married. They remained very good friends, however, but Emily never fell in love again, although she could have had the most eligible bachelors in Amherst. The play included much of Miss Dickinson's Life at her home. This year was an eventful one for the Hi-Y. The service program included sending Christmas to a school in Tennessee in co-operation with Y-Teens adopting a Greek orphan through the Foster Parents Association, having a check-room at the basketball games, and helping in the Red Feather Drive. The proceeds from the check-room went to the Y. M. C. A. World Service Fund. Not only was much accomplished in the field of service, but they also had fun at the social functions. In November the Hi-Y and Y-Teens, sponsored a. very successful formal and a Caroling Party. Other social highlights were the Mother 8: Son Banquet and the Father Br Son Banquet. 68 ,UG ofafin IST. The Hillsdale High School basketball team this year ended the season with a some what lopsided record of five wins and eleven losses. Despite the win-loss column, the Hornet squad finished the year with the Southeastern Conference championship winning five of their six league games. Head coach for the maize and blue quintet was Earl Richardson. The season started off with the Hornets being downed by Toledo Woodard 47-29. They then rose to down Tecumseh 40-31 for their first league win. Losses were then suffered in the next four games: Albion 53-29, Adrian 47-38, Albion 49-33, and Angola 50-48. They then defeated Bedford 50-28, and fell to Coldwater 47-43. Their next game was their only conference loss as Monroe Catholic Central downed them 52-48. The Hornets again buzzed as they downed Tecumseh 35-34 in a thrilling over- time game. The next game they lost to Fremont 44-35 and won the next two, downing Bedford 48-35 and Monroe Catholic Central 51-35. The last three games were losses, as the Hornets were downed by Howe Military 61-49, Montpelier 42-37, and Airport 47-41. 77 1stRUWU. to RJ: Dick Davis, Dale Boyse, Thom Hodgson, Dick Kneen, Dave Draggoo, Coahc John Donnelly. 2nd ROW fl, to RQ: Jerry Crandell, Dave Lint, Bud Mackey, John McElroy, Ron Coon, Jerry Jenkins. 3rd ROW QL to RQ: Dick Scoville, Dean Scoville, Phil Fowler, Jim Handy, Pat Callahan, Jim Grant. 2.'i2l'U2 gl i5L2fA6l f This year's reserve basketball squad, though having a fairly poor record of four wins and twelve losses, improved greatly during the season.
