Paper 3-4, BETTY WILSON Y w I a E u,.s- f lfll'I'lQl' UIQ In 1918 the Turner Cup award was started by Ray A. Turner who had been an agriculture teacher here at HHS for eight years. Mr. Turner, who is now residing in Washington, D. C. , as Federal Representative 14' Club Leader, began the Turner Cup award to promote good citizenship and it has been carried on ever since. The Cup is an award given to a Senior student each year at graduation exercises to promote good scholarship. The student is selected by the High School faculty on the basis of his value to the school and its activities during four years of high school. Consideration is taken of the student's scholarship and citizenship as well. A certificate has been given as the symbol of honor since the cup could hold no more names. These people have had the honor bestowed upon them during the years 1918 Bert Stoll 1937 Hester Myers 1919 Bert Stoll 1938 Robert Warren 1920 Gertrude Schmitt 1939 Marion Smith 1921 Asher Schmitt 1940 Wayne Wilcox 1922 Isabel Aldrich 1941 Martha Bishop 1923 Joe Cascarelli 1942 William Friedrichs 1924 Beulah Nichols 1943 Con Gemmill 1925 Charles Payne 1944 C. This is the third year of the Commercial Club. The officers of the year were: President Dick Foster, Vice-President Bob Reyn- olds, Secretary Jeanette Lamb, Treasurer Sally Kelley. At their meetings this year some of their guest speakers were local busi- nessmen and industrialists. For their service project they spon- sored six trips to Percy Jones Hospital at Battle Creek, which began with the Christmas trip. The funds raised for this project came from the student directory assembled and sold by the club members. The club was active in many other ways such as holding two dances after games, pep meeting, sponsoring a basketball team, which had a very successful season, and taking a trip to Greenfield Village and THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY. The special feature of the year was the Commercial Club held May 8th, Don Clark is the advisor. 69 7. ,... ...rw ix.. ,., ,,.. The boys opened the season with the defeat of Tecumseh Z0-0, then after losing the next two games to Bed- ford 32-0 and Coldwater 12-0, they were again victorious by defeating Jonesville twice 6-0 and Z6-13, while tieing the last game of the season with Adrian 13-13. 73 IST ROW fl to rj : Ted Diethrich, Dale Oberlin, Tom Arch, Ted Todd, Dennis Lawton, Jerry Wilson. 2ND ROW: Bob Lape, Dick Inman, Dick Harring, Phil Kneen, Dennis Draggoo, Jack Reamer. 3RD ROW: Coach James Inman, Don Scoville, Larry Jennings, Dick Swinehart, Michael Callahan. ardifg gwgefdaf The Hillsdale Hornets did fairly well this year, winning eight and losing eight games. Their next opponent was Tecumseh who tied the game in the last second and then went on to win in the overtime.
