During the evenings, club members helped at the hospital by reading to, and feeding the children. The two clubs also sponsored worship services during World Prayer Week. Girls put money on the wishing candle for CARE packages and money was sent to the Crusade for Freedom. The Y-Teens presented impressive Christmas and Easter assemblies, as well as two Pep assemblies. The Student Council this year has done very much to benefit the school the students, and the community. One of the first duties on their agenda was selecting the cheerleaders. During the Christmas season they sold Tuberculosis Christmas seals, and they succeeded in making their quota. They sponsored an assembly for Hillsdale students, and also an exchange assembly with Coldwater. The organization sent invitations to all opposing schools, inviting them to come to the dances after the basketball games. Perhaps their most important project of the year was supporting the school savings plan, which aids the students in saving systematically. The 1951 Hillsdale High School football team had quite a successful season whenthey dupHcatedthe record ofthatofa.year ago.'The Hornets won five games and lost three. The team was made up of sixteen seniors, Unrteenjuniors, and seven sophonuores. The season started off with a Z6-7 beating of Tecumseh. ln the next game the Hornets took a beating both physically and by an 18-8 score by Eaton Rapids. Hillsdale then shut out Adrian 13-O. The next two games were lost to Coldwater 19-13, and to Bedford 6-0. The final three games were all winsg Paulding 74-7, Leslie 46-6, and Montpelier 19-O. The Montpelier game was played under weather conditions which seldom prevail for high school games. Snow, mud, and the cold were just sonuzofthe adversefactors.TWns was aU coupled widithe greatdesireto get even with 'Pelier for the last year's defeat. These reasons, added up, made the Hornets play one of the seasons best games before a Homecoming crowd. 90 O P ,...,1r-Sf vw:- ,ff mv? mehr 'GQNQ fi wi A 1 .-5 fd? The Reserve Football team, coached by Mr. Richard Carr, showed that it takes more than good coaching to put a winning team on the field. The team won one, tied one, and lost three to very strong opposition. A few of the Reserve players showed the ability of being able to take over places on the Varsity team next year. We all hope that the Reserves will help bring victories to Hillsdale High School next year. They dropped their first mm i tournament game to Sturgis 53-50. The varsity team was made up of seven seniors, Captain Bill McElroy, Mahlon Rouch, Jack Rossetti, Rip Kinney, Dale Draggoo, Howard Ewles, and Jerry Towns: and four juniors, Dale Oberlin, Ted Diethrich, Bob Lape, and Phil Kneen. The Hornets were under the capable coaching of Coach Russell Huffnfian, who completed his fifth season at the Hornet helm. Hillsdale High School again played a tri-state schedule. They played games with Ligonier and Wolcottville, Indiana, Montpelier and Paulding, Ohio, and Eaton Rapids, Morenci, Milan, Adrian, Coldwater, Jackson St. Mary's Romulus, Bedford, and Air- port Community, all Michigan schools. The Hornets gained the reputation of being quite a high scoring team before the year was completed. Their high score of the season was a record breaking 86 points against Jackson St. Mary's. The squad averaged 54.6 points per game for the entire season. The high-point of the season for the Hornet team, the high school students, and the people of the com.munity, was reached in the final game of the season, when the Hornets played a near perfect game in trouncing the Coldwater Cardinals 69-43, before all the home folks at the local gym. No one could ever think of a better way of closing a season nor could seven seniors end up their high school basketball careers on a happier note.
