Many times these sports heroes are pre- dictable, but often the greatest heroes are those which are unexpected. The 1979 fall sports season at Hillsdale brought both types of heroes into the limelight. Probably the greatest hero was freshman cross-country phenom Gordon Sanders. Sanders came out of nowhere to lead the Chargers to a second place finish in the District meet and a sixth place finish in the NAIA National meet. Gordon was personal prestige by winning the District, then placing second in the Nationals to become Hillsdale's first freshman All-American. Sanders so dominated the Charger Cross- Country season as to push fine runners like Peter Colley, Bill Johnson, and An Kitze into the background. There were also heroes on the football team, though they finished with only three wins. Few witnesses will forget the heart-stopping climax to Hillsdale's 18-16 victory over Wayne State. Other memories will linger: Nate Johnson dancing through the defence on his way to another long gaing Harold Stevens levelling an opposing runner with a vicious tackleg John Lierman pulling in yet another pass and bulling for a few extra yardsg Pat Riepma scrambling out of the poc- ket and miraculously finding a receiver, mud-spattered Mark McNitt emerging from the opposing sidelines clutching his passing arm. These are memories which will linger when the season record is long forgotten. There were sports heroines as well. There was Bea Taylor, who led the women netters to a state tennis championship. The remarkably consistent junior won the individual title and had barely enough time to hop the net to congratulate her opponent before hopping off to another court to team with Sue Johnson for the doubles championship. Johnson and Sally Belew also compiled fine individual records, playing at the second and third singles positions. The women's Cross-Country team was full of surprises. Though the two top runners, Katie Murphy and Marcy Nes- bitt, were expected to perform well, few saw the potential of the other runners. Katie and Marcy led the team to a third place finish in the AIAW Midwest Regional Meet which in tum eamed them a first-ever berth in the AIAW National Meet in Tallahassee, Florida. The team retumed with more than suntans, as Murphy and Nesbitt led the team to a thir- teenth place finish overall. Among the surprising newcomers were Karen Hall, who ran in the Regional Meet despite a foot injury, and Amy Van Laar, who had never before run cross- country. Volleyball also prospered. Inspired by the death of team member Donna Moore, the women overcame an early slump to finish the season with twelve straight wins and an 18-9 record, the best in the history of Charger volleyball. Led by freshmen Sara Walters and Lynn and Karen Bobo, the team set and spiked its way to a fourth place GLIAC finish. Wal- ters won the MVP award and the Bobo twins each eamed All-League honors. Other outstanding players included vet- Yi' :git +75 - X i L 1 1 1 ..... . If-.--.,-F -- i X..-, ., xv A v ggi gt ,, , f ,r bs- .. -S U E ,nw . E . ' 91 Q .ie av ,I. The squad was unable to compete in the state toumament, however, due to problems with the AIAW. Men's Intramural Flag Football surprised no one as the ATOs met the TKEs in the finals for the umpteenth time. The ATOs played their hearts out in the semi-finals as they downed a strong Persuader team 13-6 in overtime. The TKES had nearly as much trouble defeating the pesky Circumci- sions 7-0 to eam a berth in the finals. The final game was a typical ATO-TKE game, featuring plenty of kicking, gouging, punching, and biting. In the end the TKES prevailed as Kurt Kem scored all 14 of the TKE points to lead them to a 14-6 victory. Mass Confusion was, fittingly enough, the champion in Women's Powderpuff Football. The season was full of, well, mass confusion. There were disputes about the rules, numer- ous rainouts, even a forfeit that wasn't really a forfeit. The season finally culminated in a game that pitted the Mass Confusion squad against the more experienced Chi Omega team. The young Confusion team overcame their opponents 7-6, scoring late in the game on a Sandy Boulton to Candi O'Malley pass and an extra point by Fiona Norton. The Intramural Turkey Trot was swept by the Big Effort Track Club which consisted of Eric Perttula, Jim Dutton. Bill Nolan, Kirk Zachrich, and Don Henshaw. Perttula, Dutton, Nolan, and Zachrich tied for first, and Henshaw completed the sweep by kicking past track coach Joe Rogers in the last fifty yards. The fall sports at Hillsdale were extremely successful. Two teams competed in national competition, one team won the state toumament, and another team compiled a best-ever record. But, the thing that ties all these sports heroes together is the fact that they all competed for Hillsdale College. And that is something of which we can all be proud. .mf ' 0 ATU -5-iv... But the winter of 1979-80 in Hillsdale sports was a period of youth. Nearly every varsity sport was filled with talented athletes who will return again next year in hopes of improving their record. Men's basketball was full of talent. Sophomores Ted Hauptman and Willie Scott, and junior Dale Allen retumed from the 1978-79 team that missed the NAIA national tour- nament by only one point. This year, they finished three points from a toumey bid, losing 42-39 to Saginaw Valley in the District 23 finals. Still, there were many high points. Twice Hillsdale defeated their arch rivals, the Grand Valley Lakers. In the District finals, Willie Scott poured in 29 points and dished out several assists. Transfer Johnny Hill was im- pressive in his first season, averaging 12 points a game and leading the team in rebounding. Scott was voted MVP as he set a new assist record with 197 on the season. Youth charac- terized this year's team as only Keith Szajnecki graduated. Even the women's basketball team displayed improve- ment. After a winless season in 1978-79, the women gained their first victory 52-43 against Tri-State on January 29. From there the women picked up momentum finishing with a 6-8 record. Freshman Karen Hall led the team in scoring and eamed MVP honors. Sophomores Mary Kaminski, Karen I I, -4:-1..lgi.h Schenkelberg, and Jenny Palazeti also added stellar perfor- mances. Hi1lsdale's hockey club continued its domination of the Jackson men's league, finishing with a fine 15-2-2 record. The Chargers squeaked past Freeman's Roofing 1-0 in the semi- final game. In the finals, Hillsdale trailed 1-0 and 2-1 but came back for a 4-2 win. Bryan Sullivan led the team and the league in scoring with 26 goals and 35 total points. Goalie Boomer Nichols also played superbly, allowing only 1.37 goals per game, and recording a season record of 15-2-2. Both men's and women's indoor track squads tumed in excellent performances. The men's team produced two All- Americans, Dan Gifford and Gordon Sanders. In addition, Charlie Christ, Bill Johnson, and Kevin Kitze lowered their personal best times in their respective events. The women's team shattered records like glass. Katie Murphy again led the way, as she set records in the 1000 meter and one mile runs. Brenda Sloan, Amy Van Laar, and Karen Hall, all freshman, also broke records in their events. TKE continued its domination of IM sports as they cap- tured the volleyball championship finishing the season unde- feated. The TKE's battled the defending champions PSE squad in the finals. TKE won the championship match in two games, 15-9, 15-13 to become 1979 IM volleyball champions. yf N X - 1.4- 1. , W- x J , a g -5-Cv' 'Q O 4-,' 01 'Q X 'xi' GN uri -x fa - s,,g-ag ,, IQ . Y,-1. Spring Sports The spring of 1980 was a disappointing season all the way around. Snow was still falling in April and even when it stop- ped the weather was such that Frosty the Snowman would have asked to have the heat tumed up. Hillsdale's spring sports teams were equally frigid, as only the women's track team performed up to its potential. The baseball team got a slow start due to the weather losing their first six league games. In those games the Chargers were plagued by a lack of hitting that would prove to be their weakness throughout the season. Senior Harold Stevens was the only regular to finish with an average above the magical .300 level as he finished with a .375 batting mark. Pitching, on the other hand, was a strong point. Sophomore hurler John Lierman led the club with a 2.26 ERA and a 4-4 record. Lier- man finished the year with a two-hitter against Saginaw Val- ley. Freshmen pitchers Phil Morgan and Collin Haffey also performed well in their first year. The Chargers finished the season with three wins in their last four games, providing an optimistic outlook for next year. Men's Track was a disappointment. Expected to be ex- tremely successful, the team did not perform up to its great potential. There were some high points, however. At the prestigious Dogwood Relays, Gordon Sanders set a new school record in the 5000 meter run, and Charlie Christ took second in the 5000 meter race walk. Another high point was the Hillsdale Relays at which the Chargers took first place among nine teams. The greatest disappointments came in the League and District meets in which Hillsdale took fourth and fifth places, respectively. Still, the team was able to send five individuals to the NAIA nationals: Bill Johnson, Dan Gifford, Charlie Christ, Gordon Sanders, and Kevin Kitze. John Willson's women's track team continued their domi- nation of the Hillsdale spring sports scene. The squad shat- tered record after record, led by freshman Karen Hall. Hall displayed her versatility by setting school records in the dis- cus, javelin, and 800 meter run, all in the same meet! The high point of the season came at the Hillsdale Invitational. The women totally dominated the home meet, scoring in every event and setting three school records. The truly incredible thing about the performance of the team is the fact that it was composed almost entirely offreshmen and sophomores. Amy VanLaar set new hurdle records, Brenda Sloan set a new shot putt record, and Karen Hall set a number of records. And all of them are freshmen. Only distance mnner Katie Murphy graduated from the squad. Women's softball had trouble getting their season off the ground. The team dropped their first eight games before pick- ing up a win against Oakland. Had I been aware of the difficulties, deadlines, late nights, and tremendous pressures, I probably would not have even consi- dered the job. But I am not being fair. Why is it that we always look at the bad memories? Ten years from now. I will 256 VS Q'C' .1 4 1 1 3. i I H' ' 1 I , ' V.: ' If Q :, i l i Q . r l l I 4 I 5 Y i I l 'Xi 5 remember the friends I made - those who would print pictures no matter what else they had to do, those who were always ready to help with other sections after they had completed their own. There were occasions when I won- dered if this book would be published on time. Yearbooks are notorious for being late. In my efforts to get this 0 I out on schedule, I hope I have set a ne standard - or rather renewed an o. i one. I do not envy anyone who has tr, distribute the previous year's books Irs one thousand students in the midst of finals. Now, after all the lessons I have leamed, I sometimes get the urge tonly sometimesl to try again, only the next time make everything better. We began this year with a very green staff. I, my- self, had never even done a complete layout. Of the seven section editors, four were freshmen, and four did not even know what a layout was. My greatest gift was Todd Nichol- son, who not only was my business manager, but also acted as photography manager. So while I was instructing the staff with the basics, Todd made sure all events were covered and that the pictures were plentiful. I knew that if he had ever walked away, I would have been totally lost. By taking on this job, I have leamed a lot about responsibility. You have to be tough. The first time through, you leam numerous lessons, but you grow stronger and wiser with each step. I fi- nally feel a sense of accomplishment. I have now proven to myself, and to others, that I can take on a mammoth job and get it done completely and thoroughly. With the meager budget allotted to me by Federation, I, with my dependa- ble staff, have tried to publish the best yearbook possible. Devoid of decora- tion, extravagance, and extra pages, I dedicate the 1980 WINONA to the se- nior class. It is their own scrapbook without the worries of yellowing tape, ripped newspaper clippings, ticket stubs, and loose pictures of the many friends they made. I extend my thanks to Cheryl Yurchis and Doug Bynum for the advice and aid they gave me, and to the mailroom for helping me meet my deadlines. In closing, I give my sincere apologies to all those people who be- come offended for misspellings, mis- nomers, and obvious goofs. My only excuse is that no book ever gets pub- lished in just one edition without any mistakes. Good luck to David Kibbe in l98l. - M.
