Dr. J. Donald Phillips President No one could see the pictures of our world caught by the astronauts on their moon trip without being deeply affected. The pictures of our own earth spaceship bring to us the realization that we are in fact neighbors on a trip together. And, universally, we have begun to assume a greater sense of responsibility for the welfare of these neighbors, regardless of their distant place of resi- dence-or their color-or creed-or national origin. But in the period of explosion of population, tech- nology, things and ideas we appreciate Edna St. Vin- cent Miliay's lTheret Rains from the sky a meteoric shower of facts- That lie unquestioned, uncombined Wisdom enough to leech us of our ill ls daily spun; but there exists no loom To weave it into fabric . . True, there exists no master loom to weave this shower of facts into fabric and probably there never will. Therefore, in our desire to serve our fellow man and to see him served, we will understandably become in- creasingly impatient. Complexity of life is all around us and there will be frequent temptations to cop out, freak out, or t'drop out. The only alternative is to repeat the period in his- tory described by Livy in his history of the Rome of about 2,000 years ago when he quoted a Roman leader as saying, ttWe can now endure neither our vices nor the remedies for them. Or, we could recall E.R. Dodds' description of the vogue of astrology in Greece in the second century before Christ, 'tFor a century or more the individual has been face to face with his own intellectual freedom but now he turned tail and bolted from the horrid prospect. Better the rigid determinism of astrological fater-than the horrifying burden of daily responsibility. We hope that you can regard every challenge as an opportunity, every block to your welI-meant service a responsibility to be overcome, and so we have the fol- lowing wish for you: May you have a good trip; Good in your satisfaction of appropriate and worthy goals; Good in the number of real friendships earned; Good in the comfort of sound preparation; And good in the knowledge that in your own unique way you have served others unselfishly, unstintingly and purposefully so that they too may have the desire, the strength and the love to be good neighbors in this spaceship we are privileged to call home. President J. Donald Phillips
