Donald Phillips President No one could see the pictures of our world caught by the astronauts on their moon trip without being deeply affected. The pictures of our own earth spaceship bring to us the realization that we are in fact neighbors on a trip together. And, universally, we have begun to assume a greater sense of responsibility for the welfare of these neighbors, regardless of their distant place of resi- dence-or their color-or creed-or national origin. But in the period of explosion of population, tech- nology, things and ideas we appreciate Edna St. Vin- cent Miliay's lTheret Rains from the sky a meteoric shower of facts- That lie unquestioned, uncombined Wisdom enough to leech us of our ill ls daily spun; but there exists no loom To weave it into fabric . . True, there exists no master loom to weave this shower of facts into fabric and probably there never will. Therefore, in our desire to serve our fellow man and to see him served, we will understandably become in- creasingly impatient. Complexity of life is all around us and there will be frequent temptations to cop out, freak out, or t'drop out. The only alternative is to repeat the period in his- tory described by Livy in his history of the Rome of about 2,000 years ago when he quoted a Roman leader as saying, ttWe can now endure neither our vices nor the remedies for them. Or, we could recall E.R. Dodds' description of the vogue of astrology in Greece in the second century before Christ, 'tFor a century or more the individual has been face to face with his own intellectual freedom but now he turned tail and bolted from the horrid prospect. Better the rigid determinism of astrological fater-than the horrifying burden of daily responsibility. We hope that you can regard every challenge as an opportunity, every block to your welI-meant service a responsibility to be overcome, and so we have the fol- lowing wish for you: May you have a good trip; Good in your satisfaction of appropriate and worthy goals; Good in the number of real friendships earned; Good in the comfort of sound preparation; And good in the knowledge that in your own unique way you have served others unselfishly, unstintingly and purposefully so that they too may have the desire, the strength and the love to be good neighbors in this spaceship we are privileged to call home. Leadership Workshop Leadership Workshop is an organization composed of students interested in sharing leadership experiences. This workshop has evolved from the belief that a student's aca- demic preparation is often more valuable to him if he has had a chance to relate immed- iately to practical aspects of life. Experiences in leadership are primarily involved with seminars. During the year, Leadership Workshop sponsored speakers in the Adventures in Ideas series and hosted a series of student-faculty dinners. Georgia Congressman Julian Bond gave an eye-opening speech on what is next for the black race. Below: Controversial Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty spoke on the partyman against the independent thinker. Adventures in Ideas The co-curricular Adventures in Ideas guest lecture series is presented yearly under the sponsorship of Leadership Workshop. Its goal is to stimulate new thoughts, insights and aesthetic topics by presenting learned men and women of national and international prominence to Hillsdale students. 127 Extreme rightist William F. Buckley, gave a too involved dis- sertation on world disorders. An amateur among pros, George Plimpton's resume': of past exper- iences with professional athletes proved to be quite interesting. Former US. Congressman, Stewart Udall, repeated known facts on the problem of pollution control. Jack Anderson, syndicated journalist and editor, told how much red tape is involved in Washington politics. Former basketball player and coach, Bill Russell, told his audience that he was hung up on people. 129 Pan-Hellenic Council C. Tomlin; P. Bachman; N. Hitchcock; A. Hartman; P. Weedon. The amount of work that went into the 1970 Winona was in- credible, and I sincerely appreciate every- thing. I only hope that the yearbook will meet everyone's expectations. At least I can honestly say we tried! I would also like to give special thanks to our photographer John Booth who worked so diligently for us throughout the entire second semester. We wanted to do something dif- ferent this year and without his helptand excellent photography it would have been virtually impossible. Thank you John. Thank you staff. -Joanne Bergamo 275 CONSOLIDAYEIJ GRAPHIC ARTS CORP. 3940 Fulton DL, N.W.. Eamon. Ohio 44701 JUN. qt ..$1I1-5!'I.II' flax Arty.
