I r' , , A F X ,ML if . Q Q! 'f . W THE FACULTY 1955- Many of our teachers have to be very versatile. They fill in for teachers in other subjects, and are always ready to help in projects such as chaperoning dances, sponsoring clubs, and keeping detention. Eour years of English is the requirement for all diplomas and it may be filled from the large variety of courses offered at Hillsborough. English is divided into three groups, advanced or x, regular, and slow or y. Each student is placed in the group where he is best fitted. In addition many electives are also taught. Regular sophomore English is taught by Mrs. Priscilla Lightseyg Mrs. Kathleen Mcljadyeng Mrs. Vera Odham, and Mrs. Lois Yost, who also sponsors the Kiwanettes. Mrs. Barbara Bost teaches x while Mrs. Irene Byrd teaches y. Miss Sarah Hill, sponsor of the junior American Citizens, and Mrs. Dorothy Stokes, sponsor of the Future Teachersg teach regular junior English and x is taught by Mrs. Anna Terry, who also teaches regular junior English and senior Xg and by Mrs. Louise Hoobler. The same English course is taught all seniors the first semester, but the second semester three English courses are offered. Regular Eng- lish or literature is taught by Mrs. Emily I-lylant and Mrs. Sarah Sweat. Advanced or college preparatory and thesis is taught by Mrs. Alice Twilley, who also teaches regular junior English. Grammar or C is taught by Mrs. Gladys Metz. Reading is taught by Mrs. Margaret Peeler, sponsor of the Junior Red Crossg and Mrs. Ellene Xvalkerg in addition to teaching regular sophomore and regular junior English respectively. Drama and speech are the fields of Mrs. Thelma Jones and Mrs. Frances McKibben who also sponsor Hillsboroughis three drama and speech honoraries- Masque and Gavel, Thespians, and Pi Kappa Delta. Publications are the businesses of Mrs. Jeanne Clark, Mr. Leonard Browng and Mr. john Lortong the duties of which they have assumed along with their other English classes. Mrs. Clark taught regular sophomore English, journalism, and advised both the Red and Black and Hilsborean staffs the first semester. Mr. Leonard Brown took over the second semester. Mr. Lorton teaches regular junior English, Creative Waiting, and also sponsors the Helm. Making plans for their English classes are Mrs. Twilley, Mrs. Peeler, The jolly five at the lunchline are Miss jones, Mrs. Wfalker, Mrs Mrs. Metz, Mrs. Lightsey, Mrs. Hylant, and Mrs. Hoobler.
