Students enrolling in September 1968 found it difficult to identify with a college which was housed in the back yard at Hillsborough High School. But before long the college rah-rah spirit manifested itself in the formation of fraternities and sororities, ritual initiations, and parties. By 1969 this teenage college play was left far behind and the Viet Nam war demonstrations were felt everywhere when students left the classrooms to demonstrate in Washington, D. C. against the unpopular war. The short-haired, clean-cut all- american look became the universal long-haired, umkempt, dirty-dungareed image that exemplified the anti- establishment feeling of the late sixties. With the end of the war in 1973 and the welcomed catharsis brought about by the toppling of the Nixon administration in the aftermath of the Watergate hearings, the students once again changed.
