What ever happened to Zeta Phi Delta or Theta Phi Gamma? Because HCC began catering to those students who worked most of the time, these fun and philanthropic sororities and fraternities died out between '74 and '75 along with, believe it or not, the Miss HCC contest. Sure a few of the less time-demanding Greeks like Phi Theta Kappa lived through this apathy but for the most part the only clubs left are those which are school backed like SGA or the interest clubs like Drama and BSU Maybe the beginning of our second decade will spark student spirit and these fraternities will once again regain life. 197 'I X ar A' 5' r if v-9709 Pl 'U' 4 Cheerleaders Hey Team, Fight! But before long the college rah-rah spirit manifested itself in the formation of fraternities and sororities, ritual initiations, and parties. By 1969 this teenage college play was left far behind and the Viet Nam war demonstrations were felt everywhere when students left the classrooms to demonstrate in Washington, D. C. against the unpopular war. The short-haired, clean-cut all- american look became the universal long-haired, umkempt, dirty-dungareed image that exemplified the anti- establishment feeling of the late sixties. With the end of the war in 1973 and the welcomed catharsis brought about by the toppling of the Nixon administration in the aftermath of the Watergate hearings, the students once again changed. More sober than the generation of the '60s, but more aware of world- wide problems, the student of today is unique. I' SQ. .A . me 9? W. . ,if.., . This year marks ten years of growth, accomplishment and recognition for Hillsborough Community College which began with offices in the old Hillsboro Hotel Iuly 1968 and the appointment of Dr. William Graham, president. Working within the parameters of three months 17 charter faculty recruited and registered 1625 students for the fall term. Faculty members still at HCC who met students at the Siminole Collegium fHillsborough Highj that first year include Henry Beltran, Clark Everett, Sybil Barnes, Bill Davis, Burt Griffith, Tom DeCesare, George Kosan, Dorinda McClellan, Phil Rosete, Clementine Duhart, Plano Valdes, Glenn Westfall, Bea Kunda, Sister Roseann Iones, Ralph Castellano, Lindy Fernan- dez, Gloria Phillips, and Nancy White. The years between 1970-78 became magical ones. HCC es- tablished permanent campuses at Dale Mabry, Plant City and Ybor: achieved Southern Association accrediation in 1971 and 19763 and earned the respect and confidence of the community. Dr. Morton Shanberg guided its growth as president from 1970 to 1977 when Frank Scaglione assumed the presidency. It made no difference to stu- dents who wanted to attend HCC whether their classes met in portable buildings, satelite centers, or modern carpeted classrooms. The college parallel, vocational, and com- munity services offerings suf- ficed to bring them in great numbers. Enrollment jumped from 3500 to 13,000 making HCC the fastest growing junior college in the state.
