These two girls are valeclictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Besides maintaining high aver- ages these girls have participated in other activities. Ruth has been librarian for two years. She is editor of The Burrow and mimeographer of The School Daze. She was chosen to be one of the two students from the Senior Class to take the Pepsi-Cola scholarship test earlier in the year. . Dona has been active in many musical activities. She has been a member of the chorus, glee club, and band during her four years at HHS. Dona was a class officer during the Freshman year and a band officer in her Junior year. She is now librarian of the band. At the present time Dona is devoting her time to the duties of associate editor of The Burrow and advertising manager of The School Daze. She has re- cently been named as a representative of the Senior Class to the Student Council. The next eight students ranked as follows: Wilma Mollerstrom, Mary Balkan. Betty Talmo, Anton Gunderson, Kay Kelly, Romie Pederson, Vernon Rust and Janet Qimnbmn. MARY BALKAN -hex Hov1AN1m 'We can easily understand how Mary Balkan and Jack Hovlnnd were chosen as the ones most likely to succeed. Mary's cheerfulness makes her presence always pleasant. She'll get far ahead in tltis world of ours because when she has a point she always sticks to it and argues it out. Her quality of leadership is one of her greatest assets. She believes in having fun as well as having her work prepared. One of Jack's best qualities is his calmness in whatever happensg he always remains cool and collected. He is dependable and honest, sincere and truthful. Jack has par- ticipated in many extra-curricular activities throughout his four years here in Hills- boro High School. His friendly nature makes him liked by all. WILMA MOLLERSTROM ANTON GUNDERSON You who know Wilma and Anton can easily see why they were chosen as the most active boy and girl in this high school. When ever there is any activity, there they are. Wilma has been in chorus and glee club all four years, and also triple trio awhen she was a Sophomore. She has had a part in each of the class plays plus being president of the class during her Junior year. Even with all these activities she has studied so that her scholastic average has placed her third among her classmates. She is now presiding over the newly formed Student Council. In order that she might have this honor, some- one had to organize the Council. This was done by a committee of which Anton is co-chairman. He is also president of the class this year. During the football season he was co-captain of the mighty Burros. The Lettermen's Club was helped along by Anton who is very eapably filling his job as Sergeant-at-Arms. He is also rated very high scholastically. These are only a few of their extra-curricular pursuits, as they are too numerous to list them all. KAY KELLY LYLE PEDFRSON The girl chosen as the outstanding musician of Hillsboro High School is Kay Kelly. She not only plays the flute excellently, but also plays the piano and sings. Kay has been active in music in every possible way, having been a member of glee club, chorus, band and pep band all four years of high school. This year she directed the pep band and is assistant director of the band. She also participated in the orch- estra, triple trio. and trio. Kay is very interested in music and plans to go on in that field. Accredited with making the largest percentage of free throws is our outstanding athlete, Lyle Pederson. For this he was awarded a gold basketball. Having had three years of experience Lyle was elected co-captain of the basketball team in his Senior year. He had two years of football experience and made the second most points in the basketball season. During the tournament he was selected as a member of the first all district team. '7fze Peafecl' Seniaa Req Here at long last is the boy of your dreams ff-the boy you would most like to find in HHS The Perfect Senior Boy! To begin with we will take ,Iackie's head and set it upon George's build. Don't start saying he's too short, for now we will stretch him into Vernon's height. Sounds pretty snazzy, huh? Well that isn't all! Into our dream we put Anton's personality combined with Lyle's fun loving nature. Say girls, he's already enough to swoon over and we're only half through building him. What's a boy without musical ability? Why he's only part of what he should be. So, from Roy we will get that. For something to make his conversation enjoyable we add all of David's witty remarks. just a dash of Howard's inquisitiveness plus Donald's mechanical ability. Not only does he have these charac- teristics but he also has perfect manners and knows how to use them. There he is-- - The Perfect Senior Boyff all ready for his first appearance with the Perfect Senior Girl. You all know something like that can onlyihappen in a dream and I know what yr.u're all going to do now so- Happy Dreams! QAnd they will be, if he's an active figure in 1hem.j '7fze pefpfeci genial: From the very beginning of time, to the present day, there hasn't existed a creature who could rightfully be called a perfect girl. We don't think anyone is perfect, but if such a person could exist, we would want her to be a Senior girl. Now if we were living in a magic land Qwhich we aren'tj and had the power to take a desirable feature from each of our Senior girls and arrange them to form the Perfect Senior Girl, we would take the hair of Dona, the eyes of Barbara, the nose of Mary, the lips of Betty, the chin of Arlene, the complexion of Janet and delicately mold them into the perfect head. Next we would give her the figure of Agatha, along with .Iean's height and the wardrobe of Romie. Now we will endow her with Wilma's sociability, Ruthie's personality. Alice's manners, and Margaret's humor. Without Kay's musical and Gladys' dancing ability, our girl would not be complete. Now we gift her with Dorothy's prudence and bestow upon her Ruth's abundant intelligence. She is now complete and is ready to fascinate the Senior boys. However slae does not exist, so the search goes on. If she were a reality, she would fully deserve the title of the Perfect Senior Girl. Zaye The Seniors had a lot of fun editing the School Daze and it was quite popular with the students. We tried to print articles in regard to current problems as well as articles of humor and gossip. We printed one issue each month, of which the last is- sues were much better as the high school purchased a new mimeographing machine. We want to thank all the reporters from the other classes and lower grades for their fine co-operation and to all the local concerns who gave us their laind support in making our paper the success that it was. The boys were in experienced at the start, but as each game rolled by, they improved greatly as they would have gained second in the annual tournament if they had not lost to Portland by one point. The Burros won over Cooperstown and lost to Larimore, Casselton and Mayville. The Burros gave these three schools some very tough competition. .felfeameni Glad First Row Ralph Meyer, Farl Gabrielson. Ver- non Rust. em of '48 Remember that first day when forty- four Greenhorns,' gallantly marched thru the halls of Old Hillsboro Hin amid the stares and glares of the upper classmen. At the time we thought the initiation was quite an ordeal but now we know how the Sophomures got by with it. We sometimes wonder how we survived that first day with the bells ringing every forty-five min- utes and a lecture from each new teacher on how to conduct ourselves. And how many times did we bump into opening doors when we shouldn't have been in the hall in the first place? After we were officially initiated into the school by the Sophomores we immediately settled down to electing class officers which were as follows: Presi- dent, Kay Kelly, Vice President, Harold Sorleyg Secretary, Romie Pederson, Treas- urer, Dona Nustad, and Class Advisor, Mr. Elster. Once we had our class in order we started to collect dues which we spent on a return party for the Sophomores. At the end of this, our first year, we found our class had decreased to thirty-four. The second year in high school started pretty much in the same manner as the first, the only difference being that it was our turn to do the initiating. The Freshmen talk to us this year, they're Juniors now. Once more we elected class officers who were: President, Lyle Pederson, Vice Presi- dent, Kathryn Hanson, Secretary, Mary Ball-:ang Treasurer, Vernon Rust. and Class Advisor, Miss Modin. We now numbered thirty-two. The Junior year was started with elec- tion of class officers who were as follows: President, Wilma Mollerstromg Vice Presi- dent, Jack Hovlanclg Secretary, Agatha Kuntzg Treasurer, Alice Overboe, and Class Advisor, Mr. Dyrud. Our class play, So Help Me, given in April, was a real suc- cess. In May we gave a prom at the Armory for the Seniors. Its theme was Candy Canes and Hearts and, although it was hard to decorate such a big building with such little hearts and canes, we managed to change the whole appearance of the place. This, our last year, started with a bunch of busy bees buzzing 'bout business in gen- eral. Our class officers are: President, An- ton Gunderson, Vice President, Mary Bal- kan, Secretary, Ruth Peterson, Treasurer, Barbara Engel, and Class Advisor, Mr. Dahl. Again this year we presented a very suc- cessful play, Star Crazy. As Seniors we have been very active throughout the entire year. Everyone has taken part in the publication of our school paper, School Daze. The Senior boys have been active in athletics during the four years. We have taken great interest in every fall carnival and have done our utmost to help make them successes which they have been. Many of our classmates have also been band members. Our roll call has decreased to twenty- six. This, our last year, has been the short- est, but in our minds it will remain the most important because when we go on May 28 to receive our diplomas we will have proved to ourselves as well as to others that our efforts have not been in vain. '7fu-z Jlaaouafae af '60 As we look into our horoscope we see ourselves winging our way about the uni- verse on our flying saucers, viewing the ad- vancements of the class of '48. The initial phase of our journey takes us to the speaker's platform in the House of Representatives in Washington, D. C., where we find none other than Senator George Claghorn Vettel still fighting for the rights of suffering women. Being blown out of the Senate Cham- ber by the forceful speech of the Senator, we are attracted by the John Powers models. Alice Overboe and Janet Jacobson, who are now cover models for Vogue. Going further into the Metropolis we see the sign of a prominent lawyer, Roy Olson, who is one of the foremost attorneys of the city. Flying on over the city we hear strains of music coming from Carnegie Hall. We hear that Kay Kelly and Romie Pederson are now starring in Phil Spitalny's all girl orchestra and choir. We are now leaving New York City and make our way to Detroit, Michigan. wl'ere we find Lyle Pederson coaching tlie Lawrence Tech. Basketball team to another successful season. Of course, he's taking orders from a 7-foot center. Continuing on our way into Detroit, we find Howard Riemer accountant for a large automobile company, and taking in- to account every figure he sees. Drifting on over the city and the Great Lakes, we come to Chicago, home of North- western University, where one of the world's great educators, Mary Balkan, is teacher of Chemistry. Also in Chicago we run across Gladys Lorch, stenographer for a large department store. incidently she is private secretary to a wealthy bachelor. Riding on the high C's we soar over the Hollywood Bowl, listening to a piano recital given by the students of none other than Dona Nustad. Continuing on our way we stop off in Alaska where we learn that David Steenson is raising silk worms for the Halibut Manu- facturing Co. l-le's an expert at it too. Also in this land of plenty we find Anton Gunderson breaking seals on Bot- tletop Island. He's going Blatz doing this. Descending on Siberia we discover that Vernon Rust and Ruth Schlichtmann have settled down in a cozy little iron mine and a little Rust. Our Next stop? Argentina. Where Donald Mergenthal is a wealthy cattle mag- nate. And boy can he sling the male cow Bull. Zooming around we land in the Blue Grass Country where Barbara Engel is raising thoroughbreds fior the Kentucky Derby. We just heard that her famed Dog- biscuit won the race. Now we need a well-earned vacation so we are off to Hot Springs, Ga., where we run into Agatha Kuntz, who is a physical therapist at the Roosevelt Foundation for lnfantile Paralysis. Our trans-Atlantic flight takes us to London where Jean Forster and Margaret Johnson are teaching the Londoners the dancing technique of Arthur Murray. They are very successful, too. Stopping off at Rochester we visit the famed Mayo Clinic. Here we see an up and coming nurse and a famous doctor. The nurse is the Nightengale of the '60s, Doro- thy Meyerg the doctor, af course, is Wilma Mollerstrom, who is head of the pediatrics division of the clinic. Crossing into the Twin Cities, we learn that Arlene Munter is a professor of geom- etry at the University of Minnesota. Her students are industriously studying all her angles and curves. Homeward bound we visit the Forum building in Fargo where Ruth Peterson has taken over the column Chit and Chatter. She is known to be the local gab-gifted gal of society. Overshooting our talrget we land in an isolated chicken farm where Betty QTalm0j has settled down to a happy home life with whom??? Your guess is as good as mine. Ah! Home at last, awe ride up the es- calator to the assembly of Hillsboro's'new school, wlfere we collide with the faithful understudy of Paul Paulson, Jol'n Hovland. who is making a clean sweep of his years in school. This little poem may get no laughs, But it separates the paragraphs. Senioa 61.244 Will ARTICLE I This being our last will and testament, the members of the Senior Class leave to the other classes the school building, the sunshine and the moonshine, our qualities of leadership and our place at head of the school. To various persons concerned with this school we wish to donate our relics and reminiscences as follows: ARTICLE II To Mr. Grant, who faithfully watched us for two years, we leave all the trust and confidence he didn't confide in us. To Mr. Dahl, who faithfully pushed us through four years of high school, we give back all the knowledge we learned in his history classes so he can pass it on to those who come after us. Also the rough draft of this will, which he so freely cen- sored. To Mrs. Johnson, who strived to teach us all good English, we leave the English and Literature we didn't learn so that she can teach the classes that come after us. To Mr. Fosmark, we leave all our chemistry experiments in the hope that in future years when we are in the Hall of Fame, we can point to him and say we owe it all to him because it was he who started ps out on our career. To Mr. Salisbury, we leave all the prin- ciples of Physics Qthat he tried to teach usj and also the rugged build of our football players, and the Senior girls leave him their warm and friendly dispositions. To Mrs. Nelson, we leave all of our used typing papers and eraser dust which we made trying to get by with something and which she had to clean out of the typcwriters.
