Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, And rainbows have nothing to hide. So we've been told, and some choose to believe itg I know they're wrong, wait and see. Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, The lovers, the dreamers, and me. Who said that ev'ry wish would be heard and answered when wished on the morning star? Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it, Look what it's done so far. What's so amazing that keeps us star-gazing And what do we think we might see? Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, The lovers, the dreamers, and me. All of us under it's spell, We know that it's probably magic. Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name. Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors? The voice might be one and the same. I've heard it too many times to ignore it. It's something that I'm s'posed to be. Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, The lovers, the dreamers, and me. La-la-la . . The HHS Varsity Football squad kicked off this season winning 4 out of their first 5 games, much to everyone's surprise actually. Having lost numerous seniors last season, there was fear of weakness in the upcoming 1980 season. But, for the beginning of their season, the 'Toppers continued to defy the predictions and tallied one win after another. Stunning wins over Gillespie and Pana opened their year and carried them high, until they were upset by Greenville midway through the year, a definate turning point in their season. From there, HHS went on to post a mediocre but nevertheless, win heavy, 5-4 record. The Hiltoppers were 3-3 in the Midstate. Ten seniors pictured below were featured on the 1980 squad, which was heavily composed of juniors. On this note, there seems much reason to be optimistic for the upcoming year. But, in reflection, certain moments of the 1980 season will live on forever in the minds of the young men below. When in retrospect, they are sure to remember their 3, impressive shutouts, numerous last minute rallies, a heartbreaking homecoming loss, and the fact that, under the direction of Coach Dave Ball, they were able to defy the predictions. it ' se va., , , tar' 'Q VW-F3 T i ' M V Q , ., 5 -if ., . Unfortunately, this was reflected in the fact that victories seemed to be few and far between for the 1980 harriers. Many of the squads prob- lems can be attributed to the numerous graduation casual- ties and consequently 1980 became a year of planning and reconstructing HHS's Cross Country team for fu- ture seasons. Only two sen- iors filled out the 'Toppers roster, Will Ginos and Tammy Hughes. Each year, the Cross Coun- try circuit has seen more and more females participating. For the first time in Hills- boro's history, females found their way to the 'Toppers ros- ter. Coach Ken Schaal's crew consisted of three young women, and the trend is like- ly to continue. So many new beginnings were set into motion during the 1980 year, and promise of a broadening Cross Country squad seems eminent. CROSS COUNTRY! 101 ANOTHER CNE BITES ,,,. , Y I. Coach Harland Schei- bal's crew faced many a disheartening contest throughout the season losing several by narrow margins. Despite a number of tight contests, the 'Topper came up on the losing end more often than not. The ball club did have several glimmering moments in an otherwise lackluster season, including a second place finish in the early season Greenville Tourney. The 1980-1981 cagers are sure to remember also their triple overtime loss to Taylorville. Only one graduation casualty will hurt next years Hilltopper squad, the lone senior this year being Kent Lovelace. The orange and black varsity can look forward to an experienced ball club next year. w.x Next Dance?! .A nl' 9 JV-Q 1-r bf' 1 y 3 Was'5'1xx1ws'w33:4si:vEs ,,::'V '-Visits + Q1FgIiWEWf'5'- ' '- Xi -ll-53-. fi' V.Vgr:T1-Q -'i A ,., ?rf'V'EZ.'E ? Coach Dave Ball rebuilt his squad for '81 and romped through the season to tally 14 wins and only 6 losses. Indeed it was a season of unexpect- ed accomplishments from the local grapplers. Their first place win at the Shelbyville conference tourney and their second place finish at districts are two such commendable feats. Post season action was impressive also-five wrestlers traveled to the sec- tional competition. Three 'Toppers, Mark Calufetti, Ernie Renfro and Alan Young, won their way to state competition and were also named to the State Register journal wrestling honor roll. Next year, Coach Ball doesn't face such mammath senior losses as he had coming into this year. Neverthe- less, six seniors will have to be re- placed-they include: Paul Milburg, Mark Calufetti, Paul Loucks, Bob Ei- fling, Todd Bennington and Alan Young. 1 1 i Kneeling left to right: B. GIRLS BASKETBALL BASKETBALL All season, the HHS girls basketball squad was plaqued by taped ankles, a sparse roster and a rigor- ous schedule, yet continued stamina and determina- tion on the part of the Hilltoppers brought them through. Coach Pam Roper's ball club managed to weather the series of ills and post a 12-12 overall record. The girls ball club, now in its third year as an HHS winter sport, had several highlights to their 80-81 season. The female cagers will never forget the fact that they made it to the regionals champion- ship. But, the most vivid of memories and reward- ing of accomplishments, it undoubtedly the fact that they fought back. When there was speculation that the club could kiss their win-loss record good- bye, the girls came roaring back and closed a seem- ingly insurmountable gap between win and losses. The girls' basketball team this year contained two very important seniors- Kelli Seaton and Patty Ru- fus. Patty is a 4 year varsity letter winner. She also holds the record for most assists in a single game f11j and was voted 1981 Most Unselfish player. Kelli also is a 4 year letter winner. She was select- ed as an all-area player by the Decatur Herald and to the all-tourney team for the Carrollton Tourna- ment. In that tournament, she set a new scoring record with 42 points. Her team honored her for these achievements by naming her as their Most Valuable Player and Best Defensive Player. The real excitement started for Coach Diane Wood's squad during f-'.. 1' l the post season events when the girls broke six school records at sectionals. Two Hilltoppers qualified for state competition that same day, C. Hughes and J. Wisdom. Cindy went on to place at State in the 800 and 3200 meter run. Many of the girls were also invited to postseason events such as the Springfield Best Meet and Area Best in Decatur and several did well. The raqueteers losses included several disheartening single point defeats and and cold and rainy weather con- ditions prevailed at several early season bouts. Late in the spring season, the club put it all together to take second at the Midstate Conference Tourney and were only one match short of the coveted title. Neverthe- less, the second place finish was commend- able. Two seniors, Brian Graden and Todd Bennington, have served their last games of high school tennis.
