To view his achievements we merely have to look around us and see a school system that runs smoothly between teacher and student. The student body realizes that under Mr. Beane's leadership, edu- cational advantages at H.C.H.S. are rapidly increasing. Mr. Beane con- ducts our school system not only with careful thoughts of the present, but he has constantly kept an eye to the future. We salute the sound judgment of the board of education in selecting such a capable man. Mr. Beane cer- tainly merits the sincere thanks of the students and the community. Although we hardly know they are around, Mrs. Draper and lanice Gross, two very capable secretaries, keep Mr. Beane's office running smoothly. Their jobs are time-con- suming but in their quiet efficient way, they quickly dispose of all daily tasks. Their duties consist mainly of typing, taking dictation, and keeping the accounts in top-notch order. Their friendly smiles and personalities make visiting our unit office an en- joyable experience and one to look forward to repeating. RECONSTRUCTION WAS STILL UNDER WAY WHEN SCHOOL 71 You should see it now. U'lmt I1 mess .' Wu' Close twins fompare sfhedules. Early one morning last lune, fire spread through part of the rnain building, totally de- stroying sorne of the roorns, and spreading extensive srnolce damage through the rest of it. The reconstruction was begun in the summer, but was not completed by the beginning of school, so for several weeks, students tripped around over ladders, buckets, and other things, not to mention each other. However, this didn't seem to daunt anyones spirits and everyone was very patient about the obstacle-s. As a result of the fire, Mr, Tuthill has a new office, complete with an inner sancturnn room, the Chemistry lab is equipped with new materials, and the hidden room has come into its own, with a door opening to the hallway. Overall, the school is more attractive, cheerful, and more friendly than ever before. BEGAN IN THE FALL. THE SOCIAL LIFE At the opening ol school the PHA sponsored a get acquainted dance on the tennis court. Amidst floats, players cheerleaders, the campus was in continuous hubbub with excitement and anticipation. AN AIR OF FESTIVITY PREVAILED DURING The homecoming activities began on Thursday night with a huge bonfire and pep rally, The band played our loyalty and a few pep songs to encourage our team on to a victory. After the pep rally everyone scattered to work on the floats, which their hoinerooins were making for the parade. Friday rnorning was one big hubbub with all the last minute things to be done. The parade was held on Friday afternoon. The band helped us out again by leading the parade up through Main Street. The parade stopped at the court house as the cheerleaders did a little rooting, then the parade continued down Main Street and out to the high school. After the parade everyone hurried home to get a little shut-eye before the big game and dance that night. -vs , .. -- ivy,-55 -. 'SAM' . Yjgrfly l Q v X V L. , g,f,g. sr rvllu 4 . These people, under the super- vision of Mr. Cornett, plan and assemble the book that finally turns out as your Hiltop. They get the pictures of every- thing and everybody at f-l.H.S. and arrange them in the book as they should be. They write the copy to go with the pictures They plan the theme of the book and the artwork in it. They arrange things with the printers and engravers. Early in the year they attended the Shriner's Picnic at Springfield and during the year various organizations in the surrounding area asked for their time and talent. After the many athletic events held throughout the year, they furnished the music for our enioyment and played for several of the dramatic productions given by our school. Considering all this, they have been a very busy group. lOl MR. PENCE, CHORUSES AND BANDS HAVE I Qian in his own achieved much students. 'J .,., SUPERIOR RATINGS IN ALL THEIR DIFFICULT AND VARIED ACTIVITIES Une of the most time-consuming tasks that the band was called upon to perform was the marchinq for Old Settlers and for the football qames. 'Nork was begun early in the summer to teach new members of the band who had never marched before some of the fundamentals as well as to review for the experienced band members these same fundamentals. ln addition to marchinq for both the kiddie parade and the main parade the band played a concert Old Settlers afternoon which was broadcast on VVSMl. At the beqinninq of the school year work was begun on the football rnarchinq shows. These required much hard work, time, and co' operation, for they consisted of dance steps difficult to master with horns and music as a hinderance. The hard work paid off in shows well received by the crowds at the qanies. Part of the success of the shows was due to hard work which the rnaiorettes put in. Several mornings each week all through the year they drilled to perfect a qood maiorette section. At the end of the year they were featured in a number on the spring concert. Comprised ot students elected by their fellow classmates from each home room and class, they have done a wonderful job in helping to govern our school. Alter our athletic events, they sponsored many dances and other parties throughout the year. Besides helping our school, they have also helped themselves, by learning the true meaning of democratic procedure and leadership. They have not held many meetings but at the few they did hold they accomplished a great deal. So we salute the Student Council for a iolo well done. ,J , A 'IWW Q , I K 1'-1-umm Mary and Janice help Jane check registration f A A aff ' OFFICE WORKERS ARE AN ASSET T0 H. H. S. Although we suf- fered a defeat from Litchfield in the earlier part of the season, we came back fighting and de- feated them with a margin of 19 points, making our year even more successful. Their showing at the Pontiac tournament sur- prised and delighted everyone who is a loyal basketball fan. Prior to this time they had a record of 3 wins and 4 losses. In spite of the poor rating they were given, they returned home with a fourth place trophy. After the holiday our team set a wonderful record with a winning streak of l4 games which was snapped by a defeat of l point at the hands of Gillespie. This defeat came in the Regional tournament held at Carlinville and was brought about in the last few seconds of an overtime. Although heartbroken our boys proved to every- one present that they could be splendid losers as Well as modest winners. This page spcnsore.. h 1 City Dairy 24 .? I fm. ki, 1-if 92 f in Q. ' ,. L. Grainer WHEN SPRING CAME, TRACK Our track season was a very successful one again this year. For our first meet we tied with Vandalia and went on to place second in a triangular meet with Pana and Kincaid and second in another triangular meet with Vandalia and Greenville. In the conference we placed fourth and tied for fifth in the District meet. Dave Calu- fetti broke a half-mile record at the mid-state conference meet and our mile relay team won first. Dave's placing in the half-mile at the district meet enabled him to par- ticipate in the state meet held at Champaign where he placed ninth, an accomplishment of which the track team is very proud. 3, LH. Dur- ing the regular season play, the team won six games while losing only three. The Worst part was that two of our losses were to our arch-rival, Litchfield. Then in tournament play at Nokomis, the Hiltoppers were nosed out in their tirst game by Shelbyville by a score of 8 to 2. Thus the season ended with a 6e4 record.
