The man who keeps the Wheels of our school running smoothly is the president, Mr. Schindler. He has a daughter in our midst and is well acquainted with the problems of the school and therefore generously and will- ingly devotes much of his time to them. He also has a son and daughter Who are graduates of H.C.H.S. Q. 7. rqmfmfion G. T. Anderson, who is just beginning his fourth year on the school board, is a very active and interested member. Through his son, he has kept in close contact with the needs and wishes of the school. A very civic minded citi- zen, Mr. Anderson is president of the Sports- mans Club and a member of both the Kiwanis Club and the Hillsboro Commercial Association. Uaaille pieuan Mr. Pierson was elected as a member of the board for the term ,43-,45. As a clerk in the Hillsboro Post Oflice, a position he has held for five years, he is doing his share for the war effort. He always greets you with a friendly Hello, there! His son is in the army and his daughter graduates with the class of 1945. U21 Y THE 1945 HILTOP Borad of Education ezmza aww, Mr. Charles Attebery has had many years of experience as a member of the board of education, as he has been a member of District 157 since its beginning. He has two sons and a daughter, his daughter is teaching Home Economics in our school. His oldest son is in the army, the other, a member of the grade schools. famed Gam Mr. James Cress, who has been a prominent member of our board for several years, has two sons, Lt. fj.g.D James Cress, and Lt. Bob Cress, both former students of H.C.H.S, who have seen active service abroad. His two daughters, Marion and Louise, are both married, their husbands also being in the service. Mr. Cress has served as sec- retary of the board for many years. Girhard, Pierson, Cress, Schindler, Attebery, Anderson 13 F aculty gngfidfz Busy is the word for her, teaching English I, advising freshmen, and directing the noisy Freshman-Soph- omore Girls' Chorus-that's Miss Beckemeyer. The sophomore boys all swooned when they saw their new English teacher, Miss Lemons. She is shy, yet very capable. Miss Bennett, a versatile teacher, knows her speech as well as English III, and what would the library be without her? Miss Manning gives to the juniors and seniors a keen knowledge of English, and her senior class play is always a hit. Whitten, Adams .fanguaged The efficient Mrs. Wingler certainly can teach the freshmen something new and differ- ent-Latin. She also has a second year class. Plus these, she takes charge of the Girls, Phy- sical Education classes and first hour study hall. To replace German, a new and more popu- lar language, Spanish, has been added to our curriculum this year. Mrs. McCall, who has studied extensively and taught a number of years elsewhere, makes a very competent teacher. 141 THE 1945 HILTOP Beckemeyer, Lemons, Manning Bennett A46-zkelftijiya Teaching plane and solid geometry, aero- nautics, trigonometry, being Hiltop ad- visor, assistant principal, and school treas- urer, Mr. Adams couldn't be guilty of loafing even if he wanted to. His students think a lot of him because he still remem- bers when he was a boy. Having taught in England for one year and having toured much of the continent of Europe, Miss Whitten has many intre- esting stories to tell. Besides teaching ele- mentary and advanced algebra, she is also dean of girls. Wingler, McCall THE 1945 HILTOP ant! Gaim Little Miss Horner sits in her corner-and gives forth voluminous epics in American his- tory. Not only history of the past, but also the present and future. Mighty discussions take place in her classes. Students look for- ward to the days when they can participate in some of these royal discussions. Her civics class isn't left out either. Keeping busy isn't difiicult for Miss Horner because, besides these classes, she directs Junior-Senior Chorus on Monday. To keep those noisy girls quiet is quite an undertaking in itself. Then, too, she always has charge of the operetta in the spring of the year. Class, I do wish you would learn the diff- erence between Louis XIV and Magellan. I've explained them over and over, but listen againf' Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Mrs. McCall has taken over the modern, medie- val, and ancient history classes this year. Her history classes are quite large and they get a little wild at times, but she man- ages them somehow. Don't ask us how, though! Faculty 9 1421251 As We enter the class of industrial arts, we hear the familiar voice of Mr. Mey replying, Get back to your benches, and let's have it a little more quiet in here. Mr Mey, the first to teach the skill of mechanical drawing and carpentry in our community high school, has added his knowledge to the faculty for four consecutive years. He attended Milli- kin University at Decatur for five years where he obtained his B.S. degree. After leaving college, he obtained a job as an in- structor of industrial arts in a high school in West Virginia. He took the job here as in- structor of 'wood mechanics in 1941. Mr. Mey instructs his Hrst year students to draw and read blue prints for the Hrst semester, the second semester they start learning the trade of wood work. His second year stud- ents work on more skilled woodwork. Be- sides instructing classes, Mr. Mey contributes his skill to the high school by making many handy articles for general use in the school. His hobby is making violins, and he has been very successful in this. His first violin was displayed at the Chicago World's Fair. He has made two bass violins, one of which is in Paul Whiteman,s orchestra, the other in Benny Goodmanis orchestra. Lenich, Athey, Horner Mey I 15 Faculty THE 1945 I-IILTOP G 0411411467506 Commercial geography and arithmetic are semester subjects taught by Mr. Urbanscek. t'Hav- ing lived on a shoestring so long, I think I am well qualified to teach commercial arithmetic, ,quips Urbanscek. He gives frequent ten minute tests to awake the nap- pers. Mrs. Spotti is a newcomer this year, teaching bookkeeping argl typing I. Listening to the chat- chat of the bookkeeping and the pick-peck of the would-be typ- ists is enough to try anyones Spotti, Kilpatrick, Edwards nerves, but Mrs. Spotti takes it all in her stride. The first year shorthand class frequently hears Miss Edwards expostulating, How dia' you get to be juniors? In teaching the shorthand classes, typing II, and transcription, her pupils admit she knows her stuff V, Mrs. Kilpatrick, who taught here before her marriage, is helping out again this time as a substitute bookkeeping teacher. She is understanding and helpful to her students. We say, Bring on more substitutes like Mrs. Kilpatrick! nwadhwe For the eighteenth consecutive year, we are glad to have Mr. Orland as our instructor of ag- riculture. Because of his impressive ways of teaching, Mr. Orland is well-liked by all his students. He attended the University of Illinois for four years where he attained his B.S. degree. Before coming here, he taught agriculture in Assumption, Illinois, and, believe it or not, his hobby is farming! He teaches his first year stu- dents the turning of soil and the planting of crops. The pupils who take agriculture the second year learn the knowledge of animal hus- bandry. The third year is spent in learning about the kinds of trees and knowing different parts of farm machinery. We think Mr. Orland has proved he is a very capable instructor. Orland I 16 I THE 1945 HILTOP Faculty .-,Fame gcannmioi Warden and Attebery Graduating from Millikin University at Decatur in June with a B.S. degree, Miss Attebery is very up-to-date with her teaching. Since she is so tiny in stature, it is necessary to take a second glance to tell whether she is student or teacher. The girls in the sewing classes are often asked, Are you sure your bobbins are in right? or Please, no chewing gum. There are about seventy girls taking the home economics course this year. This is the largest class we have had for several years. Skirts and blouses were made early in the fall, and they had to have an outside pro- ject completed before Christmas. As the young seamstresses progressed into the second semester they each made a dress and presented a style show for the Woman's Club and P.T.A. The cooking class canned a variety of fruits and vegetables at the beginning of school. As the girls learn to serve as well as cook, they assist Miss Reed in the cafeteria at the noon hour which is useful experience for them as well as being helpful to her. The different classes entertain each other and they also invite outside guests. The girls helped serve at the Farm Bureau Banquet, at the Country Club, and at several other occasions. Besides being advisor of Home Economics Club, Miss Attebery is also Junior Sponsor. ai Menghini Green, D. Grassel, Darrah Mehochko Spinner, D. Redman ' Boliard Madge T171 Iuniors Fearheiley Gmac! Science Between the two of them, Mr. Urbanscek and Mr. Fearheiley do a superb job of teach- ing the freshmen their science. And since the course is required, they consider them- selves lucky to have such teachers. In Mr. Urbanscek,s class, it seems, there is always something cooking. His timely wisecracks keep the class in a jovial, friendly mood. Students look forward to the days on which they have lab, thus getting a chance to fill in their slightly behind-the-datev note- books. Whereas in Coach Fearheiley,s class, the students resemble a lot of mice because they are always CPD so quiet, except, of course, when his presence is required at games, and then a rare old time is had by all. Coach Fearheiley keeps his class scratching at their heads by his frequent tests. Lab experiments relieve the monotony of the regular class periods. Between the two of them, the freshmen should find them- selves knowing a little more than some- thing at the end of the term. flfil THE 1945 HILTOP Scienced of great i11ftp01ft:z11Ce 6111061328 . . whether in war or Peace . . . efazaa, There are two classes of biology, one un- der Mr. Urbanscek and one under Mr. Cox. To the students, the amazing revelations in biology become more complicated. For in- stance, do you know why plants turn their faces toward the sun and students turn theirs toward the clock? Mr. Urbanscek shows his sincere interest in the subject by doing experiments in his home which cor- respond to the current ones in the class. Perhaps the most harried teacher in H.C. H.S. is Mr. Cox. Hurrying back from the bedlam of band the first hour, he delves into his first class of biology the third hour. Mr. Cox is teaching biology for the third year. This was his major in college. Urbanscek THE 1945 HILTOP Piqua Did you ever hear so much noise? Where does it come from? Why, the physics class, of course. They have a jolly time up there. For a While, that is. Suddenly and myster- iously, the laughter and chatter stop. But we all know why. Mr. Girhard has just stepped in. Usually, Mr. Girhard is heard before he gets there since he carries a great bunch of keys on one key ring. Sometimes, tho, the noise they make is deafening even to themselves. So when Mr. Girhard steps thru the door, startled students gap, Yipes, I didn,t hear him, did you?', With all he has to do, we wonder how Mr. Girhard man- ages to meet two classes of physics each day, with lab twice a Week. Often, he livens the class up with a peppy, humorous story of some of his adventures, or misadventures. He served in the Navy in World War I for two years and many are the tales that he can relate to the class Cand generally they're connected in some way with physics.D Seniors Giwmabuf Crash, clatter, tinkle! You,re right, another test tube gone. Quietly Mr. Cox replaces it. The odors floating through the halls can without a doubt be blamed on the amateur laboratory technicians in chemistry lab. Rotten eggs, sulphur, and other such smells are their specialty. Crash! KNOW, if you people aren't more careful, we'll have to begin charging you for the things you break, warns Mr. Cox. That might be rather expensive, we think. fDid we say mtberj. Two days out of the week the class has lab and the other three are spent in the lecture room. The lecture room isn't really as bad as it sounds. With Mr. Cox as head man, we're just like one big family. You know how families are. Darn it! This is Mr. Fearheiley's 18th year as head coach here at H.C.H.S. and during this time he has produced teams in football and basketball that average an 85? win. This is indeed fine and H.C.H.S. considers itself lucky to have such a fine man as head coach. Coach Fearheiley not only teaches the boys how to play basketball and football, but also tries to build character and sportsmanship in the boys. All in all it can be said that in the opinion of the players he is one swell fellow. liaaketddl 1945 iss Benny, Rappe, Sitton, Jagosh, Mizera, Telfer Droste, Hailstonc, Pulliam, Sears, Rovina, Betoche, Sturgeon Anderson, Funk, Jurkanin, Ware, Manning, Gorsage, Fearhciley The basketball cagers had a fair season as far as wins and losses are concerned, com- ing up with 17 wins and 12 losses. There were plenty of upsets and surprises, too, es- pecially when they came through to upset some of the strong teams in the Midstate Conference and managed to hold Taylorville down to fewer points than they got all year. By being able to use a man to man and a zone they were able to hold the high scor- ing teams to low scores. Co-captains Funk and Gorsage with our Panama transfer, Manning, boosted our scores to a level above the half-way mark on the Midstate rat- ings. Ed Ware was always in on the scoring kill during the last half of the year. Thus these four with the rest of the lettermen plus some fast offensive plays, managed to keep the scores close at all times. All in all, next year's team will be well on the road to greater victories, for fifty per cent of our lettermen will be back on the first team lineup. 1 THE 1945 HILTOP Mmwgm Mawqm Jim and Gene kept the basketball and suits neat and clean throughout the sea- son. DALLAS MANNING From Panama came an outstanding all-round athlete, Dallas Manning. He was particularly good at defense and long shots. His high scoring won many games for us. This year the honor was conferred on one of the most outstanding girls in the community, Mary Pauline Hartline. An active girl through all her school years, Mary has received many honors in musical contests where she always plays her cornet so well that she is known among musicians as a usmooth trumpeterv. Her talents are not limited, however, to trumpet playing. She has a natural rhythm and grace which make her an excellent dancer, and these same qualities help her in her vocal music. It is Mary Hartline looking like a vision in he her full yellow net formal sparkling with sequins and enhanced by the blue velvet royal robe. Four small boys dressed in Eton suits are her train bearers-David McLean, Eddie Tobias, Eddie Wingler, and Mike Blackburn. Our King this year is our handsome senior class president, Bill Settle. He sits on the white-mantled throne with the ease of a professional monarch until his queen is announced. Amidst a great silence, he rises and crowns her Queen of Love and Beauty. After a long applause from the audience, Dorothy Pierson sings One Kiss , and Dick Wolf plays Beautiful Coloradov on his saxophone. As Dorothy and Dick bow to their majesties, the maroon velvet curtains close on the line of aqua, gold, and orchid formals, the flower baskets, the white throne, and the end of another successful carniva . 65 Queezfs C Our! rqillencfanll far! 3 THE 1945 HILTOP Lohr, Phipps, Elam, Corbin, Pad- dock, Frkovich, Andcrwn Luck, Dorsey, Jean, Zeller, May, Gracie, Johnson, Hulrs. This year the Auditorium show presents a little number about one of the girls who has grown up so fast during the bobby-sock age. As the curtain opens, we see a group of teen-agers registering for high school. Standing off from the group is a girl who thinks she,s learned enough. My! but how smart some of these girls think they are. She is a fine example. The teacher, seeing the girl looking very bored and disinterested, asks what is wrong? Walking about with her head pointed at the ceil- ing, she replies that she wants to marry and settle down. Anyway, she is too grown-up and doesn't need to learn any more of that corny stuff. Their prowess as a marching band has yet to be excelled by any of the neighboring communities. Aside from this, though, is their ability to render diflicult concert overtures with the ease of experts. From this band, many have gone out to play in college bands and orchestras and in dance orchestras all over our country. The train- ing the young musicians receive under the able direction of J. B. Cox is a perfect foundation for future work in the field of music. Even the members who have no intention of using their music for any other pur- pose than their own amusement and enlightenment are given a lot of fundamental work that is highly educational and most enjoyable. The black and orange uniforms in which the band performs have a striking effect upon the eye. Smooth and military they lend an atmosphere of good taste to all public performances. Every month the Com- mercial students, under the direction of their teachers, Miss Edwards, Mrs. Kilpatrick, and Mrs. Spotti, and their own student officers, gather for a meeting in Hall I to discuss affairs of vital importance to all business- minded young people. To open every regular meeting, the students stand to sing their praises to Q'The Star Spangled Banner. At the conclusion of the national anthem, the president calls the meeting to order and the group has its attention deftly turned to matters of com- mercial importance. Proceeding according to parlia- mentary law, the meetings run smoothly even over mat- ters where there is a certain amount of dissension. The very life of the discussions, in fact, is in these controver- sies. By maintaining order throughout the meetings, the president gains Valuable experience in leadership, and the members learn the importance of correct beha- vior in the business world. Various topics claim the THE 1945 I-IILTQP Commercial Club 0wz14im...5 E attention of the club, all of which are impartially and thoroughly discussed. Speakers are called in to help Edwards lead these lively discussions, to give their ideas on the topic being talked about, and to help the group come to a logical solution of the problem. Upon the close of the discussions, satisfied smiles can be discovered on faces all over the big room. Each time one can hear young voices exclaiming, Well, whadda ya know? Imagine learning all that in forty-five minutes! Why, all that is lots more interesting than I ever imagined! When a speaker hears remarks such as this one, he is doubly re- paid for the inconvenience he might have had in arrang- Kessingef ing to talk at school. Educating these young minds is indeed an essential task. The huge world of business will profit from the time it spends at school discussing its affairs with the students. Proudly and efficiently they work, ever eager to learn their skill. The afternoon clothing class, too, purrs with activity. Here we see a girl working quietly, her scissors sharply clipping the patterned goods. Another stands with her mouth full of pins, judging the length of the skirt she is hemming. At Christmas time the girls celebrated by making gifts for each other. They also learn to identify their materials and to buy them at correct prices. Their first sewing was a gathered skirt.
