As the band began playing 'LThe Pilgrim, the first girl and her escort appeared cross- ing the gymnasium in front of the bleach- ers and down the center aisle. She was dressed in a gown of moray taffeta, trim- med with ruffle, edged with black velvet and contrasting crystal buttons. She car- ried a nose-gay of assorted flowers outlined in blaclc. The procession formed a rainbow consisting of five different colors: gold, rose, blue, turquoise, and peach appearing alternately. Coronation After the shows were closed around 11:30 o'cloclc everyone filed over to the New Gym to await the crowning event of the evening. As the band played the an- nual crowning march, the fourteen lovely queen,s attendants and their escorts walked stately to the stage of the gym. When the time came our Queen of Love and Beauty, Joan Telfer, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George Telfer, of Hillsboro, was crowned Queen of Hillsboro Community High School for 1943 by William Hensen, pres- ident of the senior class, as lcing. Nancy McHugh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. McHugh, of Hillsboro, as runner-up in the voting, during the evening, was the queen,s maid of honor. The queen,s train bearers were Ann Col- lins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shirley Collins, and Sybil Andres, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Andres. Claudia Col- lins, daughter of Mi'. and Mrs. Shirley Collins, scattered flowers down the white carpet-way, while Raymond Bellaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bellaver, carried the pillow and Larry Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Adams, bore the crown. After the crowd had become quiet again our majesties were entertained by a dance number composed of Theodora Marcolini, Wayne Welge, Winifred Rogers and Royal Cloyd. Then Anita Mae Turner and William Rutledge sang a vocal duet, My Hero,', from The Chocolate Sol- dierf, Varied lighting effects in pastel colors, during the coronation ceremonial, made the scene a beautiful one. MINSTREL AND PUPPET SHOW! TI-IE 1943 I-IILTOP Yabsuff' A M insrrel All the negroes and their mammies genially convened in Study Hall I to join in a hot, hilar- ious time with corny jokes and rhythmical tunes to entertain the over-anxious crowds that thronged the door at the close of each show. High spots in the performance were: Cynthia Ann fOline Giesej vocalizing on Darkness on the Delta with the remaining chorus keeping time with their feet and hands, Lindy Lou QMary Vandeverf cutting the rug to the tune of Mister Five by Five , Eight Ball fFrank Dentonj telling us about Abraham, the darkies' favorite, and Blackout flames Corbinj praying for the adjournment in Amen. As a joyful spirit prevailed we felt in a mood to forgive any shortcomings which could 1101 have resulted from lack of practice because we were faithful to rehearse each morning before school. Corns A -Popping Passing by the library door, one has the impres- sion that a burlesque is in the ofhng. Miss Bennett, with the able assistance of Miss Lockhart, produced this jolly show. Ir was chuck full of gay songs and lively jokes. With heads bobbing up and down and feet L,shu'ffling to the tune of the Strip Polka, the show q opened with a Hourish. Glamorous movie stars, such as Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner, Ann Sheri- dan, and Greta Garbo, dazzled the spectators with their breath-taking beauty. Playful skits were handed in by the comedians. Of course, these stars were portrayed by a group of students. Popular songs, such as Roll Out the Barrel, Mr. Five by Five, Nursie-Nursief' and Der Fuhrer's Face headed the musical bill. After the program, the people hled merrily out, quite con- tent that they had spent a memorable hour. fi ,5.,,-5111 ' 4 l , A fi rl ' NF ,1 ,ff f v ip, Hill, Edwards, Skin, Andres, Markel, YX ilson, Brown, Cole Denton, Franklin: Brown, Harold Seymour, Nlaryg Rogers, W'inifred THE 1943 HILTOP LIBRARIANS K Bennett, Sturgeon, ,.aa Cole, McLean Seymour Grassell I-lickman ones Moore Ellin ton, Arnold, May, Wright, Andres, Vandever S Before School .,.......... The library, in cooperation with the U.S.O., held a book drive for the enjoyment of the Armed Forces at home and abroad. With the able assistance of the librarians the drive for books was a success. That is one word used and over- used by every member on the Hiltop Staff. Last spring all thought it quite an honor to be selected by the staff to edit the 1943 yearbook, but at that time we diclnit know the work connected with it. Yet I am sure there isn't one person who would willingly give up his place so another could take it. Although there are countless worries and responsibilities and much work, we all love it. The financial department, circulation managers, business managers, and candy girls, keep the bookkeeper con- stant.y juggling and rejuggling the finan- ces. They must come out right! Earning money was our biggest worry this year. Prices of all materials used in the book had leaped skyward and our proceeds from candy sales had surely precipitated-in the opposite direction. But as the old saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way. So we managed to publish our book. Preparing the I-liltop for publication more or less follows a set routine. The art editor and her assistant plan the book. First they make a dummy on which the pic- tures are pasted and spaces are allotted for write-ups. This is quite a responsibility because the appearance of the finished book depends upon the accuracy and orig- inality of the set-up. The literary and sport editors and their helpers slave over copy. They are rhe ones who must see alll' and know all that is going on around the school. Their headache comes when they try to fit the copy into the space allotted to them by the art editor. The kodak edi- tors take all the pictures. Their worry is to remember to change plates. The typists type all the written material in the book, so you can see they are kept pretty busy. The underclassmen representatives do a little of everything. They are always willing to help where they are needed. The job of rhe editor is to keep all departments working together and to help everyone. Although we all have to work, we find plenty of time to have a lot of fun while doing it. I am sure everyone in school has heard us laughing at one time or another. Our motto is, c'Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone. We owe much of our success to our capa- ble and ever-willing advisor, Mr. Adams. THE 1943 HILTDP Hiltop Staff HILTOP' STAFF Mollman. E. Brown, H. Pattie. D. Hensen. W. Denton, Ware, E. Adams, L. R. Much is to be said about the drills and formations of this past year, planned by our versatile leader and executed brilliantly fafter weeks of hard practicel by the band members. Most outstanding of this year's marching shows was a salute to the Navy, entitled, Ship Ahoyln After a single file entrance, forming of ranks and numerous drills, the band formed the word, 'CN-A-V-Y,,' causing wild, rousing cheers from the patriotic audi- ence. Moving out of this formation, the band swung into a straight, counter march headed down the gym floor again, led always by the six acrobatically inclined drum major- ettes and their strutting captain, Patty Andres. By moving into anchor formation, they again scored a hitn with the crowd. As final salute a navy bell was made from the accumulated lights of the band members, hats. Moving off the floor, playing spirited naval marches, as they had through all their maneuvers, obeying Pattie's directive baton and whistle, brought final applause and shouts from the people. skill by playing for all basketball and football games. All such games wouldn't have seemed complete without some peppy marches from a band who knows how to play them! But to prove further their adaptability at playing all sorts of musical compositions, the band ended their successful school year with a '6Victory Concert on April ZZ, 1943, with war bonds and stamps as admission prices. The evening proved a huge success, with light classics, marches, group ensemble work and comedy band skits. Few people except the perspiring members knew of the months of hard, serious practice it took to make such a success. Mr. Cox, whose musical background and study, personality and leadership, is to be complimented for his part in making our band what it is-an organization noted throughout this part of the state for its marching and concert ability. Some credit should also be given the members themselves, a few of whom are state contest winners of previous years, and who have led in initiative and persever- ance all year. If music is a morale builder, the Hillsboro Community High School Band has and is contributing its share of this noble quality to our community. In the movie she promises to wait for her soldier sweetheart-so he plans to have Andrea make Kip fall for her-and she'll promise to wait for him-just as in the movie. It will be a cinch for publicity! Everything goes all right, except that Andrea and Kip fall hard- and it is the real th' f ing or both of them' The press agent isnit taking any chances, and at the end of act two the house is swarming with soldiers, who plead with Andrea to wait for them. Kip is furious does she want the whole United States Army to wait for her? Then, Paula, an adoring girl friend, and Coralie, a baby-talk girl friend, whom Kip has been stringing along show up, and Andrea accuses Kip of being a Don juan. The chances of bring- ing the two of them together get slimmer and slimmer-until the final curtain, when Kip dashes off to catch his train for camp, and Andrea prom- ises to wait for him-but it is the real thing at last. . Pierson, Puccetti, Hartline, Wilson. MGSQME and Gavel Masque and Gavel, the national recognition society for the promotion of speech, for use in sec- ondary schools, was recreated to serve students and teachers interested in the better usage of American English. The obiectives of Masque and Gavel are three- fold: fl, To recognize and promote significant student achievement in any area of speech in the high schools. Qi To assist the student in raising his standards of speech by providing services of analysis and advice, and by publishing a quarterly magazine. QQ To sponsor a better relationship between the high school and its community through a co-operative program with national service organ- izations, and churches. Now for our own chapter in H.C.I-I.S. Our sponsor is the capable and lovable Mrs. Neylon. She gains much helpful advice from Miss Manning in selecting and directing the members of Masque and Gavel. At the beginning of each school year they inquire of their upperclassmen, those who are interested in speech. After much thinking and sorting, the students who are officers and Mrs. Neylon contact the parents. These letters must be signed by the parents, and then the new members are ready to be initiated. The officers this year are: President, Eileen Wil- son, vice-president, jane Hartline, secretary and treasurer, James Pierson, sergeant-at-arms, Albert Puccetti. Two of our officers have left. lames entered the University of Illinois, and Albert is now in the U. S. Navy. Nevertheless, our chap- ter has not been idle. A war stamp and bond drive was sponsored by Masque and Gavel, and Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary Juniors. Every noon period there was a stamp and bond booth in the corridor with members of Legion and Masque and Gavel. Tuesday, first hour, a representative of these organ- izations sells stamps and bonds to the students. Another highlight of the Masque and Gavel year of '43 was the play, Elmer and the Lovebugf' It was purely comedy and Frank Markel made a per- fect Elmer. As the school year was passing, it seemed the Masque and Gavel was doing little, but now we look back and recognize the fact that this organiza- tion has clone its share. G. A. A.
