S., l lirst recall the prelimi- nary period which was set aside for plays, ly- ceums, announcements, etc. l can still see Pick as he strolled to the altar with his royal crown cocked on one side as he portrayed a character in Wliy' the Chimes Rang , given by the Ger- man club. Oh! yes, remember how Margaret Smith made a perfect housewife in the Christ- mas playg and then we couldn't overlook all the interesting lyceums. I remember especially the man from jamaica and the Swiss Yodlers. Going from the auditorium to my first hour class, I was always deafened by a loud din of voices and a clatter of footsteps. As the con- glomeration of people finally subsided, the few lingerers rushed madly to their classes as the bell rang loudly starting the first hour class. Re- member when we walked into the auditorium one morning and held our breaths as we saw six chairs balanced carefully on one tiny table. After we viewed the state of affairs we scurried over to band and what did we hear but a band screech of trombone which turned out to be just jerry Yorlie imitating Tommy Dorsey. Un top of that we looked around and saw Lindh Young wiping lipstick from behind his ear. I wonder what julia Anne meant when she said, Is my lipstick smeared? l could go on for- ever telling you about the Hrst hour but as you read on through this book you will learn more and more about life at H. We've all enjoyed im- mensely their grand marching this year, especial- ly the patriotic demonstration. On those days that Mr. Girhard was detained in the ofhce second hour, a low mumble of voices that later developed into a jam sessionl' could be heard in the upper corridor. Could the physics class have been locked out of the lecture room again? We remember too the loud crash that penetrated our ears on the day that Stuart Cole fell out of his seat-of-honorn in room 13. The students in the classrooms near the foods laboratory no doubt enjoyed the delightful Z6 Beckham. Rill, Guile, Niehrand, lfnster PERHNJ aroma of home made candy the week before Christmas-Miss Foster's girls' contribution to the Christmas cheer in their respective homes. With the coming of spring, we understand that the freshmen were so overcome by spring- fever that on the first warm day Miss Whitten was forced to let them take a turn around the building to subdue their vagrant impulses. This also reminds us of the time when Miss XVhitten spent part of second hour in the library thinking it was third. This, the so-called serenity of the second period of our school day, was always broken by the thud of twelve hundred feet hitting the floor at once, and the corridors buzzed again with lively excitement. You can always use pencils. Then, somewhat dejected due to the profound empty feeling that began creeping over us at the beginning of the period, we half-heartedly sank into our respective seats at eleven-fifteen and immediately began listening for the twelve o'clock bell. We recall several incidents that occurred at dif- ferent times during the year to verify the fact that our minds strayed from the straight and narrow track quite frequently the fourth period. Two seniors found that the last forty-live min- 38 utes before lunch sped by much faster when they were engaged in a game they called pincl1y-winchyn, and Mr. Adams had to apply a more forceful power than words to divert one of his trig student's attention from the back of the room. Finally at eleven-fifty-nine, as if by instinct, notebooks were snapped shut, books were closed, and the arms of the auditorium seats were put down. We sat tense, barely clinging to that edge of our seat which was nearer our source of food-either our locker, the cafeteria, or some- times the candy stand. After an extra long minute, we saw, and heard the race from the New Gym, and then the stampede began once more. THE 1941 HILTOP TEACHERS UU Il TE lllllfll Y . I, L L. These thoroughbreds are racing furiously as they near the last turn to the lunch line. At the sound of this bell some of the more drowsy students liven up and get into the routine of school. Of all the hurrying and scurrying dur- ing a day at H. C. H. S., none can surpass this inad rush at lunch time. Une day as I was coming upstairs from lunch, I noticed Velma and Casanova. I suppose you all heard about that little affair. W'hether it was serious or not, all passers-by just had to chuckle to themselves. Can't you remember the startling surprises that have happened in the first floor corridor? Thanks to Mrs. Neylon you can actually walk through the hall without being pushed from one side to the other. One day when our boys were going to meet those daring l,itehHeld lads, we had a pep meeting in the corridor and it was so much fun. liveryone showed vim, vigor, and vitality, and there was so much enthusiasm in their cheers that it gave new courage to our boys. After noon hour things begin to quiet down and fifth hour starts. Many activities go on such as: Girls rush to Chorus, boys go to their Glee Club, and others to German Club meet- ings, Commercial Club meetings, G. A. A., Girls' Clubs, and to top it all oil Hiltoppers are .ill over the building at once. They are taking pictures, running down delinquent payments, meeting salesmen, and then back to lliltop. This year the girls have taken part in more outside activities than in the past, and several interesting meet- ings have been planned for them. At the first meeting Elva Long was chosen for president, Margery Davis for vice-president, and Mary May for sec- retary. The club sent Elva l,ong and Mary May to the Home Economics meet- ing at Springlield, and they gave their reports at the second meeting. A vocal solo by Jeanne Neece was also enjoyed on this particular Vfednesday. Those on the program for the third meeting were Margery Davis who gave a report on the Litchheld meeting which the girls at- tended, and others who provided musical entertainment. During the year the girls not only found time to make new drapes for their class rooms, but also did a great deal of sewing for the Red Cross. Both the foods and clothing classes have new laboratory equipment this year which makes their work more enjoyable. THE 1941 HILTOP BOYS' GLEE CLUB HUDDYQY RULIBADUURN If someone should be walking down the hall during the iifrh period on Thursday, he might hear the harmonious sound of Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock vi- brating through the walls of the old gym. To be sure it would be enough to arouse anyone's curiosity and upon a little investigation he would find it to be the Boys' Glee Club just striking out on the last note of Grandfather's Clock. twe wonder what Grandfather would think if he could hear it!j The Glee Club is an organization, com- posed of the first and second tenors, bari- tones, basses, and those who just sing. Mr. Radcmacher wields a wicked baton, Nancy Dammann beats it out eight to the bar, and john Strausbaugh, the President, does not much of anything in his high position but gives his moral support. These went together to make a very impressive picture. The Club did itself proud this year as it had not only a quartette which was composed of Lindh Young, Kenneth Ellington, Paul Welge, and Joe Ven- turelli, but also a trio, of which the mem- bers were Lindh, Kenny, and Footy.D They had a very successful year and had the opportunity to sing at many schools and outside entertainments. Some of their favorite fours, tooj numbers were Go Down Moses, K'Sweet and Low, and Stand Up and Cheer --and everyone did! THE 1941 HILTOP ll I Il L I' , - 'k CHOIR Llf We attended the first few meetings of the Girls' Chorus in the New Gym where the freshmen and sophomores took their places along the top rows of the bleachers to form an audible, as well as picturesque back- ground for our skilled senior singers. Our capable orlicers, kleanne Neece, Martha lirnst, and Bette Mclean were elected at the first meeting. Due to the large enrollment, it was necesf sary to divide the chorus, and Miss Biggs took charge of the freshmen and sopho- mores after the first two meetings. Theo- dora Marcolini was chosen as corresponding secretary. and Mary Illlen Attebery was the accompanist. We gladly donated the printed song sheets to them, and every Tues- day, the fifth hour, the rafters rang with The Glow XVorm and other favorites. Miss Horner kept her juniors and seniors, but as soon as the winter blasts began to blow and snow flakes began whirling about us as we ran from the Old Building to the New Gym, the meeting place was abruptly transferred to the Old Gym. There Ifloi' Marie Strange furnished the down-beats, and the rest sang from honest to goodness music with notes. THE 1941 HILTOP CIR Lf' lfHUhLlf Our interest in Girls' Chorus was constantly stimulated by the frequent programs. Remember .the one based on Stephen Collins Foster? lt was educational as well as interesting. This year we enjoyed those last few minutes of each meeting when rhythm reigned even more than cv- er before. In fact, the Girls' Chorus now owns a good many of the sweet popular pieces - Trade Wii1tls, etc. Then spring was in the air, and we blossomed forth with all the added enthusiasm that is always present during the operetta season. We were undaunted by the epidem- ic of mumps that raged through the school, keeping some of the leading characters at home for a few days. Witli the help of the Boys, Glee Club--both direct and indirect-and with Miss Horner and Miss Biggs guiding us over the bumps, we succeeded in producing another successful operetta on the stage in the New Gym- Hansel and Gretelf' Top Pltfrului Davis, Rowman, jagoxh, XVall, Rohal, Dra- hant, Paris, Ciaddis, Coderko. lidwards, XVeiss, Davis, Menghini, Huber, Mehoc Hartline, Potts, Telfer, XY'ilson, Andres, Pulliam, B., Marcolini, Steele. President, Herr Russell Pickerill, took charge of the meetingsg viee-president, Herr Willie Mikeslta, patiently waited for the day to come when he could take the president's chair: and secretary- treasurer, Fraulein Rosalie Greene, did her best to keep the wolf from the door. Club meetings were made in- teresting by singing Deutsch songs under the leadership of our advisor, Herr Rademacher, and also by the very exceptional programs which were given throughout the year. Instead of having the annual weiner roast, a dance was held at the Country Club and the Music swung sweet and slow, Wtls styled by Kepper, Ben, and Moe. Everyone had a wonderful time. Aufwiedersehen. THE 1941 HILTOP The Girls Athletic Association is an active and energetic group whose many activities consist of initiations, teas, bas- ketball spreads and an, annual May Fete. This year their eflicient officers are: President-Helen Cramer Vice-President--Iune Hill Secretary-Treasurer-Bernice Pulliam The membership of G. A. A. reached twenty-nine this year and the organiza- tion welcomes all new members. Last summer four girls, June Hill, Ber- nice Pulliam, Ruth Kessler, and Grace Osborn were sent to the Central G. A. A. Camp at Bloomington. Grace took care of her own expenses but the G. A. A. paid half for each of the other girls. This year the G. A. A. intend to pre- sent to you The Quest of the Firebird. The leads will be very capably performed by Hope King and Elio Fiocchi. Hope portrays the part of the Firebird and also Princess Arora. Elio is Prince Iioreas. The Lady of May sends the Princes in quest of her waiting maids. One by one the Princes return bringing with them not the firebird but something which equally pleases the Lady of May. Finally, with a loud fanfare, Prince Boreas enters triumphantly for he alone has captured the Firebird. Soon the Firebird is released from her spell cast by the wicked witch and becomes the beau- tiful Princess Arora. Upon seeing her, Prince Boreas exclaims that she is his heart's desire. After the play, awards will be given to the seniors. G.AA N 1. . .. ..,.. ui...- Greene, Guy, Gaddis, Laurent, Fuller, Lynch, Kessler, Pownall. Dr. and Mrs. Wood, the tolerant, understanding parents of Penny, through their good humor and charm, have made their home a rendezvous for all their neighbors. The story concerns Penny and Chuck Harris, the boy next door, as they go about the frequently diflicult, but always amusing busi- ness of growing up. When Penny's Uncle Mer- vyn, only five years older than she, brings Roger Van Vleck, a senior and killer-diller, home from college, she forgets to be a man-hater and sue- S6 cumbs to an attack of calf-love, writing him lush love verses and buying a flaming red evening dress to impress him. Meanwhile Chuck is having problems of his own, the most per- plexing of which is a struggle with his father over a glider. After Chuck has a narrow escape with the glider, Mr. Harris comes to a more sympathetic understanding of the trials of youth. Penny's efforts to make herself attractive to the fascinating Roger almost disrupts two families, but the discovery that Roger is double-crossing Mervyn by trying to steal his girl, brings her back to normal, and incidentally, to Chuck. Then I always laugh when I think of the day we passed Audrey's shoe around the room and also the time when Rody was so astonished to see one of his prize pupils stick out her tongue at him. You always say that slips don't count, and I guess it's a good thing they don't sometimes. To go on to the biology lab, I can still see the look on Nancy's face when she found Rodie', fthe toadj in her purse. By the way, those were queer names for toads weren't they? The six periods that had been left behind-and incidentally had been long forgotten in most cases-had reduced our vitality to such an ex- tent that we no longer made an effort to over- come the power of sleep that was steadily creep- ing upon us. Neither had the invigorating an- ticipation of hearing the buzz of the three-thirty bell produced its effect on us as yet. How we envied those seniors who sat in the front of the study hall-far enough away from Mr. Adams to be confident that their daily seventh hour snooze would not be interrupted. The unfor- tunate creatures who had to spend this period in a stuffy classroom were frequently forced to rely on each other's support to prevent such accidents as often befall vertical slumberersf' The few hints of excitement that revealed themselves during this period found practically no competition. Thus such trivial things as tacks and cats soared into the limelight and at- tained fame over night. QWe do, however, realize that a tack, though it seems so small to the majority of us, is not a thing to be laughed at-if you get the point., Suddenly without warning the seventh hour lull began to break. The study hall dozers slowly come to life-some nonchalantly-some to the rare amusement of those around them. Then the entire student body, now rested and aware of the fact that there was only one more class ahead, revived and were once again in con- dition to sit erect in their eighth hour classes- with their coats on-and not so much as bat an eyelid. 63 TEACHERS THE 1941 HILTOP 6 A U Ll lol TE CHEIL' B. That was the period when we wonder- ed whether to take our coats to class or not, and also the time we debated with ourselves as to whether we should take books home or spend the evening at the basketball game. In the eighth hour students went to sleep in study halls, exhausted from a busy day, and certain people read such interesting articles as Why' Witlows are Dangerous. Then there was that day that Rody told Gordon to remove his feet from the poor mistreated chair, and Gordon laughed till he developed a bad case of hiccups. I heard also that there was at one time a cer- tain corporation of four boys in history class. I wonder if they ever consented to paying their income tax! How well I remember the time when Miss Wlaitteil was late for class and Bob took over, acting very intelligent with his high-minded ideas and uteacherly' ways. That was when we learned what a wide held of education ad- vanced algebra covered. With each eighth hour came the end of the school day. To some of us it was an exciting day full of fun and enjoymentg to others it was only wasted hours of dull, tiresome classesg and to the majority of students it meant only another leaf torn from the school calendar. 65 TEACHERS Mollmun, Lemmon, Crabtree. They usually decide not to take any book after you've shown .them every single one in the library. Meanwhile, someone comes in who knows a very deH,nite book that he wants and if it is out, he decides to wait until it is returned. 68 Last but not least is the person who after being shown every book decides upon the first one shown him. PAUL WELGE Paul's long shots kept Hillsboro on top during many games this year. He played as a main- stay for three years. ROSS MORMINO Rossie's overhead shots and offensive playing made him a member of the team for two years. JACK OTT Jack was a flashy forward uncovered in his junior year and improved greatly. His ability to handle the ball saved the game many times. ROBERT JONES Bob played as a sub his junior year while this year he took over his duties as center. Every- one counted on Bob to pull the game off the ice, as he frequently did. KENNETH WILLIAMS Tubby held up his end of the defense and came out with flying colors. Long shots were his specialty. Tubby looks forward to his senior year. ARTHUR SALSI When we got in a tough spot Coach Fearheiley put Art in to give the team that extra pep they lacked. WAYNE WELGE Wayne played as a sub on the team this year. Whenever we needed the rebounds the Welge brother combination gave us the support. KENNETH ELLINGTON Kenny showed his speed on the floor and could always be counted on for those much needed points. BILL DAGON Bill was a new find in basketball this year and looks forward to his senior year. 78 KENNETH LONG Kenneth played mostly on the second team, but also did his part in playing as a sub on the first team. KENNETH PHILIPS Kenneth surprised many fans by his ability as a basketball player and shows initiative. ALBERT FISHBACK Albert is only a freshman and shows much promise in his three remaining years. ROBERT FERGUSSON He played as a regular on the second team. He shows the makings of a Hne athlete. MIKE FUDOLI Although Mike uses his mouth too much, it came in a little handy when he played with the second team. MAURICE SUITS Deacon's ability to handle the ball shows great possibility for the future. FRANKLIN DENTON Franklin played as a sub on the second team but always put in his share of playing. LAMAR PHILIPS Lamar, a brother to Kenneth, helped the sec- ond team to many a victory by his perfect team Work. FRED ROOT Fred, a senior, was ineligible for football or basketball but helped keep the boys' suits and clothing in shape. The audience went wild when john Strausbaugh, wielding the baton, and his little German band QGeorge Jones, Ventu- relli, Iired Zellmann, Lindh Young, Jerry Yofhe, and Bob Ludwigj swung out to the tune of South of the Border. As -Iulia Schluckebier announced them, six countries appeared in person to us. Under their disguise we saw John Paul Summers, Martha Ernst, Rosalind Guy, Margaret Smith, Mary Welsh, and Elio Iiiocchi. To present a better picture of their representative country, they sang, danced, played a musical instrument, or gave a speech. Then Noretta Hicks, Irene Orvis, Patsy Lyer- la, Norma Phillips, and Ruth Kessler tripped out as dainty Dutch lassies. They whirled and 82 twirled in their wooden shoes as if they had lived in Holland all their lives. As the curtains parted, we saw Jeanne Neece with her seven Indian maidens seated around the campfire. Supplemented by her fair maidens fRosalie Greene, Helen Todd, Bette McLean, Betty Sturgeon, Eloine Simmons, Dorcas Stur- geon, Marjorie Wolfj, Jeanne sang an Indian song. Last but not least was this troop of dainty, graceful ballet dancers. Under rouge, lipstick, hair ribbons, and curls were Fred Root, Kenneth Willianis, Willy Mikeska, Jack Ott, Arthur Salsi, Kenneth Ellington, Ross Mormino, and Paul Welge. The crowning glory came when Ar- thur's skirt flew out into the audience. Their teacher and leader was Evangeline Ginos. THE 1941 HILTOP CARNIVAL T V A Oh, my stomach! Wfell, it really wasn't that bad. Those freshmen girls are good cooks, when they stop fooling around. The stand they dec- orated looks like a penitentiary offense with all the stripes. lt's a good group of mothers we have to bring candy for us to sell and help swell the prohts. Mary probably told Shirley a good fortune. lt's in the cards. The fate of many people was decided by the able fortune tellers in their gay dresses and weird surroundings. The as- sistant, in this case. was unnecessary. Oh, the awful bugbear-blocking. But it is required for a minstrel show. Miss Manning knows how to smear it on and hit all the high spots. Miss Biggs had charge of all of the music and accompanied each number on the piano. The Nlinstrel Show was one laugh after QII1- other. All was ably managed and kept going by the interlocuter, NV. W. Welge, lfsq. A Girls' Quartette flirted through a number that was genuine art. Several of the teachers had slightly tinted faces, after some of the jokes concerning them were given. All was good, clean fun. The rootin'-tootin'-rodeos directed by Miss Clark was a rip-snortiny, gun-tootin' shindig. The songs they sang packed lots of wim, wigor, and witality. Some of the jokes they gave out were true masterpieces in their line. The solo by Nitro Markel was beautifully rendered, with an accent on the rendered. Mel.ean, llicknian, Latham. The senior class of Hillsboro High have been most successful in getting whole- hearted cooperation from the student body and from those business and professional men who advertise in our annual. It is the accepted fact that the heart of a yearbook is the advertise- ments. Since our first high school yearbook was published in 1923, the leading business and pro- fessional men of Hillsboro and concerns with which we have had contact have given the sen- ior publishers their loyal support. From a careful survey of previous editions we have compiled an honor roll of those who for a decade or more have ads in our book.
