Nicholson The 1963 Hillslmrro honors a teacher who is dedicated to THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. Through his American history class, he teaches his students to appreciate their rich heritage in democracy and to become better citizens by keeping abreast of current events. It is his responsibility to teach hundreds of students to respect the rights and properties of others in the study halls. He has made the Hi-Y program at Hillsboro become one of the best, providing extracurricular association for junior and senior boys and leading the Hi-Y basketball team to championships in recent years. As a sports enthusiast, he serves as the commentator at home football games and a TSSAA official. Each of us had a brief moment of glory . . . on the playing field, in the classroom, or that special date. We felt the hopeless reality of exams, projects, deadlines, semester grades, college applications, and Monday mornings. 3:45 became 3:30, and geometry classes were uni- fied and for sophomores. There were the usual green freshmen, noon-time cafeteria rush, crowded halls, and blar- ing pep band. With Cuba came civil defense drills, noontime alerts, and concern. Through crisis and learning, we all became more appreciative of THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. , f,w1 iQ .41 iv 5' g EDUCATIO Q Q-ffyglggzk. .5 -f My if V,-bf' 3 9 92 1: ,jif fg gy ,, , I. ,J 'QTHIC FOUNDATION OF ANY STATE IS TIIE EDUCATION OF ITS YOUTH. Mr. Fix-it himself, Lionel Buchanan To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die, A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted, A time to kill, and a time to heal, A time to break down, and a time to build up, A time to weep, and a time to laugh, A time to mourn, and a time to dance, A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together, A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing, A time to get, and a time to lose, A time to keep, and a time to cast away, A time to rend, and a time to sew, A time to keep silence, and a time to speak, A time to love, and a time to hate, A time of war, and a time of peace. Charles Suite helped his students to learn to think for themselves and form their own ideas. He was single- minded in his devotion to Hillsboro and its ideals. Through his life, philosophy, and deep knowledge of American government, he was able to give each of his students an insight into the true AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. It will be difficult for a man to achieve quite the perfect -balance of serious purpose, sense ol humor, and keen informed intelligence that Mr. Suite possessed. W ix w 1 -Q-ex , W? 7 Q N . School life is not just merely a daily routine, but a most unique phase of our youth. It includes not only regular classes and assemblies, but also clubs, service com- mittees, and socials. One is always free to choose the way in which he wishes to manage his school life. Whether it be through pep rallies, games, dances, or service to the community, each student acquires a separate feeling which makes him proud to say that he is a part of Hillsboro. Each one of this institution has a noted advantage toward mak- ing his school life more meaningful. The more one participates in his school life, the better he will be prepared for participating in THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. The faculty of Hillsboro plays a definite role in school life. Through these persons, we acquire both known facts and respected opinions. Our teachers often make great sacrifices for the benefit of their students. -as f Academic life is the mainstay of American education. At Hillsboro, one is introduced to the most modern and efficient methods of teaching. Here a student may enroll in a modern math course, an experimental chem- istry course using a Well equipped laboratory, American history and biology courses with supplementary teachings through the facilities of educational television, excellent language courses with a laboratory for the further de- velopment of the conversational languages, valuable business courses, and even vocational courses, making use of a fine shop. Although the programs presentecl are quite variecl, they are always interesting, in- formative, and most enjoyable. Some of the featured programs incluclecl a concert by the Evans- ville College Choir, an aclclress by Vice-Mayor George H, Cate, Jr., anrl the appearance of Bryan Green, the famecl English evangelist. The Buncl Concert Career Day Bryan Cn-on Cheerleader Try-outs These scenes are incidents of a routine week at Hillsboro. Things which now seem unimportant will probably be the best remembered portions of school life. Whether it be a hall scene, Mr. Harris's daily pose, getting an excuse, trying to find a place in the cafeteria, or a humorous classroom happening, memories of all these will linger in the minds of Hillsboro stu- dents. .n r Mr. Harris's daily pose Getting an excuse Finding u place in the cafeteria 1? For youth, the most noticeable change came in dancing with the arlvent of the unmistakable Hugh-Baby. ln music, the folk singers ruled, and in movies it was The Wes! Side Slory. No wardrobe was com- plete without maclras and Weejuns. For Nashville came Metropolitan gov- ernment, a new mayor, anfl ice hockey. Those who take part in it are divided into two main groups: those who sing and those who Work with instruments. These primary divisions are subdivided into smaller ones, such as the Pep Band, the Madrigal Singers, and the Glee Clubs. The music department is left open for all students to enter into, however, during the lunch periods. At this time many are found in the choir room-newly equipped with a very fine tri- speakered stereo system and resilient wall board-listening quietly or studying to the music being played. Mrs. D. J. The con- cert band often entertains the stu- dent body in assemblies, and we all realize the contribution made by the Marching Band and the Pep Band during the football season, particu- larly. The band practices during the sixth period each day, led by Mr. Simms, one of the finest directors in our city. The Marching Band boasts both a Color Guard and Majorettes, all of whom play an in- strument in the Concert Band, also. The band participates in parades and festivals, and is always well repre- sented in the All-Star and All-State bands. These people are hard work- ers, and they are great assets to Hills- boro High School. This year our band is composed of particularly talented people, as We discovered when ,Ian Wing won the Talent Contest with her drum solo, and was followed closely by the Majorettes. The Burros defeated Franklin lt!-O in the homecoming game to make the joy of the occasion complete. MBA, evpecting an easy win over long time rival Hillsboro, got a shock when the Burro team evploded onto the field. Outstanding play on both offense and defense was led by Captain Charles Gibson and Uuarter- back Marbut Gaston. The fired up Burros gave MBA fits rifxht down to the final gun.
