Fa ll Scenes Mock Election School Principal and Prexy DEDICATION MR. FRED HATCHETT Mr. Fred Hatchett As the seasons ofthe year pass and the pages ofthe HILLSBURRO turn, there is a person who will be remembered as a genuine friend, a lasting and favorable impression to everyone who had the privilege to work with him. When not teaching, he seems to spend all his spare time working in the office, counseling students, working in his laboratory, taking pictures, or managing the football and the basketball teams. But no matter how busy, he alvvays has time for a friendly word and his interest in Hillsboro students is ever apf parent. It is with these thoughts in mind that we, as seniors, would like to say thank you, Mr. Hatchett, and to dedicate this, the pleasureful moments of our last year at Hillsboro, because you have helped make them memorable. Foreword y 1961 l I How full and memorable the year has been for us. The Pirates won the series, trouble brewed in Africa, Kennedy won the election, and kneefticklers became the rage. As season has faded into season, countless events have constituted another un' forgettable year at H.H.S. The Hillsbtwvo does not pretend to capture what Hills boro is either verbally or pictorially. Its purpose will be best realized if it evokes from timefhazed memory, novv, and in years to come some of the treasured moments of your Hillsboro days. For this year has not ceased to be, it has merely finished with time. S Fall - Faculty .... Academics ..... Freshman Class. Football ....... Fall Features . . . Organizations .. A. HOLCOMB BURROS 6 LAWRENCEBURG 20 In the first game of the season, the crippled Burro team ventured into the vicinity of the Lawrenceburg Wildcats. Absent because of knee and ankle inujries were cofcaptain Tommy Scoggin and end Tommy Law. This put ter' rific strain on the part of many inexperienced substitutes. However, the Wildcats had play' ed three games previously and at that time had their singlefwing offense clicking with David Childress, who scored two of their three touchf downs. Even though game experience was in their favor, they couldn't contain the Burros' Steve McLean who plunged over from the ten yard line during the fourth quarter. Season begins with out of town teams BURROS 6 SPRINGFIELD 7 In the second game, the Burros met the Spring' field Yellow Jackets on the rainfsoaked Hills' boro turf. The Burros went into the game as an underdog Qby 32 pointsj but on that night a near upset was in the balance. If the victory had been on our side, it would have to be credited to the powerful Burro defense. Gang tackling and brilliant punt coverage constantly heckled the highly rated jacket offense. Outf standing defensively that night were Ira Reese, Bill Cochran, Tad Gardner, Tommy Law, Tom' my Scoggin, and Bill Weatherford. These boys held the Jackets scoreless for the first half but had to give up seven points during the third quarter after a tireless offensive attack. 41 FRANKLIN COUNTY 6 HILLSBORO 6 Witli the Franklin County Rebels L1 nine' point Rworite, the Burros held them to Ll 6f6 tie. By means of a fake play, one of the Rebels' 200fpound lineman got the ball on ll fumble and went for 21 six point lead in the first quarter. Later in the second quarter the Burros began to get fired up and cleared the way for fullback Wiltoii Burnette to tie the score. In the fourth quarter Athe Ballentine to Gard' ner combination began to click. and they moved the hall for thirtyfeight y11rds. The next play Ballentine's pass was intercepted by ll Rebal guard. Then, because of the defense of the Burros, the Rebels were forced to punt, and eofcaptain Tommy Scoggin took the b11ll with thirtyfnine seconds to go. A free kick was called for, but the uprights were too far away for Power, and the game ended in a tie. and a successful season continues BURROS 7 COLUMBIA 0 A perfect Homecoming game was created by fullback Larry Boese against the Columbia Lions. Larry faked Ll punt and passed to Dixie Ballentine for a first down. Then Steve Mc' Lean carried for nine yards. Boese then carried two more times and on ll third carry pounded over the Lion's defense for a 6fpointer. Dan Golden Toe Power booted the conversion and the Burros boasted ll sevenfpoint lead which later meant ll sevenfpoint victory. Tommy T Gossett played powerful defensive ball and succeeded in blocking a Lion punt. In this fourth game of the year the Burro team was maturing into a hardfknocking and hardftofbear ball club. 42 BURROS 11 LITTON 13 In the fourth game, the Burros ventured into the Lions' Den. The Litton Lions, No. 3 team in the state, sought to have an easy victory. But these dreams came to an abrupt end in the second quarter. Alert defensive end, Tommy Law, jolted the ball loose from the Lion's quarterback while he was in the end Zone. A Litton halfback tried to run the ball out, but due to a crushing tackle by jerry Snater, he found himself both 6 feet behind and 6 feet under his own goal line. This gave the Burros a 2fO lead. Due to the safety, the Lions had to kick off to the Burros. The Burros were still hot and, upon taking over the ball, Dixie Ballentine immediately hurled a 40 yard pass into the awaiting arms of Wibby Fidler. With lirst and two from the goal, both Ballentine and Wilton Burnette were unsuccessful in trying to score. On the Hrst play of the second half, the Lions recovered Tommy Scoggins' fumble and went on to score. Later in the quarter, a 15' yard penalty drawn by the Burros set up the state's high ranking team for another 6fpoint score, making the total 13g9. In the fourth quarter, the Burro defense tightened up. The Lions were forced to punt from their own end zone. Rather than risk a blocked punt from the Burro forward wall, the punter fell to his knees in the end zone, Hometown foes BURROS 7 RYAN 14 This game was another third quarter heart' breaker for the Burros. At the half, it was a 7-7 tie with the Burros making a powerful show. The Burros score was accomplished through the hardfrunning efforts of Larry Boese, Wilton Burnette, and Steve McLean. Dan Powers topped off the 67fyard march and scored with a one point conversion. In the third quarter the Panthers threw up a strong defense and stopped the Burros on the four yard line. Golden Toe Powers missed a 10fyard field goal attempt and the Burros fell victim to a 55fyard touchdown pass play. This gave the Panthers a 1497 lead and also decided the victory. 43 BURROS 20 FRANKLIN 0 After two close losses the Burros decided to come back in a big way, mainly on the effort of junior fullback Wilton Burnette who rushed for 78 yards. The Burros had 255 yards rushing. In the first quarter Steve McLean breezed across for a six point lead. Later McLean scored again after a Zlfyard carry. Dan Powers put the pigskin through the upfrights with ease to end the half with a 13fO lead. In the fourth quarter, Coach Nance put the juhior backfield in. With junior quarterback Tom Davis calling the plays, halfback George West went for a 49fyard touchdown run. Powers converted to end the game with a 2040 victory. burros deal big defeats BURROS 35 COOKEVILLE 0 This game, as the score indicates, was one of the most impressive examples of Hillsboro's mighty Green and Gold Squad. The Cavaliers came very near being blasted into orbit that night from their own homefield turf. Key passes by Dixie Ballentine plus the savage cnf slaught of bacldield running led by Steve McLean, Wilton Burnette, Tommy Scoggins, George West and Larry Boese gave the Burros a much needed win. The Burros brilliant defensive efforts must also be applauded because the first three touch' downs were set up by alert punt coverage. A key interception by defensive great, Tad Gardf ner also set up another Burro touchdown. Dan Power capped all five scores that night with successful onefpoint conversions. One of the most impressive plays of the night was a Ballentine to Law pass play which ac' counted for 6 points. At the snap ofthe ball Law blasted into the end zone, Ballentine Hred the ball, Law made a near professionalftype catch, two yards from the line of scrimmage. 44 BURROS 12 LEBANON 0 After a twofgame shutout streak, the Burros played host to the Lebanon Blue Devils. The greatly improved Burros rolled up 260 yards rushing with 13 first downs. Using the Blue Devils as a practice team in preparing for the M. B. A. conflict, both the offensive and def fensive teams made excellent showings. The game was enlightened by a stirring 64fyard run tallied by Bill Cochran with key blocks thrown by both Wibby Fidler and Tad Gardner. The next score was made by 'iSnooz McLean who bolted over from 11 yards out for the 6fpointer after receiving a 27fyard pass from Larry Boese. Inside Linebacker jim Turbeville made a sterling pass interception and many key tackles. Also proving his defensive talent was outside linebacker Andy Goutras. Both were conf stant thorns in the Blue Devils' side. Winning streak continues BURROS 20 M. B. A. 0 On the last game of the season, the Big Burro team met the little Reds on their own field to decide who would take the third place in the AAAA. The little Red's morale weakened when powerful Bill Cochran received a flimsy M. B. A. punt and easily pranced by every red and white defender. Tremendous downfield blocking by determined Burros such as Big Daddy lra Reese, T Tommy Gossett, Jerry Snater, and Wibby Fidler bowled down the red IO pins for a 56fyard touchdown. All through the slaughter center Robert Howell and guards jim Turberville and Fran Bass put conf stant pressure on the little Red's Mack Travis, David Wzilker, and the little Red headed Metcaff. This enabled Turberville to recover a M. B. A. fumble which set up a 37fyard march that was topped off by fullback Wiltoii Burnetteis blast from the five yard line. Golden Toe Dan Power booted one of his two conversions and the Burros led 13ffO. The Big Burro defense was relentless through' out the game. Such stars as Tad Gardner, Tommy Scoggins, and Andy Coutras kept the reds totally powerless. 45 Back Row: Coach Younger, Billy Holbrook, Jody Folk, Danny Herndon, Mark Osborne, Mike Brown, Billy Morris, Billy Cope, john Broderf ick, Ernie Carmen, Grady Warren, Bobby Bernard, Randy Silver, Asst. They opened their season with a 12f7 victory over Father Ryan. But in their second game they encountered the Overton Bobcast and had to settle for a 64 tie. In the Litton game, the scoring went wild. But the Burros came out victorious with a ZOYI4 blast. Columbia was their next victim and they fell 13'--6. But the last game was a heartbreaker. The Burro team fell victim this time to arch rival M. Kneeling, Don Packard, Manager, Coach Coutras, Philip More- head, Manager. 19604961 became a big year in basketball as well as football for Hillsboro. Many injuries plaqued the Burro Basketball team throughout the year but the Burros rolled up a topfnotch 16f4 seasonal record, a total of 1,063 points as to 933 by opponents, and an invitation and win over Ryan in the annual Polio Game. The Burros were fourth in the 19th District and proved to be a real uheads upl' rugged ball team. Highlight games of the year were the highly exciting Madison, Du Pont, and West games. These three teams were rated the city's most powerful clubs. All but one CWestD fell before the wellfengineered Burro squad, 46f43, 7457, and funfortunately the lossj 3749, respectfully. Due to the Burros fine record and play, the Burros were asked to par' ticipate in the Polio Game. Going into the game 12 point underdogs, the Burros came out a 22 point victor over Ryan, 55f33. Individual scoring for the regular season went like thisfTommy Law, 263 points, Joe Bob Geer C16 gamesl 246 points, Larry Boese, 223 points, Tad Gardner, 151 pointsg and Tommy Scoggin C13 gamesl 56 points. In the tournaments, the Burro hopes for a state bid were high. They started off with a blast, but the key seasonal injuries proved to be of needed importance. After Hillsboro defeated Joelton C64f32D Tommy Law and Larry Bo :se led the Burros past the Antioch Bears 62 fto 51. In the next game, the Burros met the 19th district champions, Madison. For a while things looked bad for the Burros, but the LawfBoese combination began to hit and the Burf ros won 4Of33. This victory enabled the Burros to meet Donelson for the tournament championship. The Burros fought haid bit Lady Luck sided with the Dons. A lastfsecond basket handed the victory to Donelson 4Of38. Although th: Burros lost the tourney crown they still were able to enter the Region V tournament. But again Lady Luck sided with the opponents and Hendersonville shot 44.9 per cent to down the Burros 64 to 46. This scattered the Burro hopes for the region and the state. 126 -SY fi A '?.
