Hillsboro, hear our song, Our Alma Mater, School days to you belong, Tears mixed with laughter, Now hear us pledge anew Vows broken never, O happy memories Cherished forever. Hillsboro ln every society there are people who raise themf selves above the crowd in an effort to gain the praise and adulation of others. But more important than this recipient of glory is the individual who takes time to perform the small assignment and to conf sumate the unfinished. Such has been the life of Mrs. Price during her years at Hillsboro. Mrs. Price, the school secretary, has endeavored to transf form herself into a private secretary for all who ref quest her assistance. While working behind a high stack of college apf plications, she is often seen with the purse strings of Hillsboro's financial matters in one hand and at' tendance records or a telephone in the other. She is truly the one with her fingers on the pulse of Burro activity. In the midst of ringing telephones, she still manages to ask with a smile, 'LMay l help your Although she seldom has the opportunity to at' tend school assemblies, she exemplifies the all imporf tant words 'ischool spirit. So it is to Mrs. Mary Price that we dedicate this record of our last year at Hillsboro. sf-vu, 'Wing N.. NR-...f Mrs. Mayfield and Mrs. Price discuss one of the many problems that occur during a normal day at Hillsboro. 4 Dedication W? Y 1 X, 5 in We S Y R fx Nm 3251. ,, 5 1 MRS. MARY PRICE, School Secretary l I Foreword The seconds have passed into minutes, the minutes into hours, the hours have blended into days, days which have crystallized to form our unforgettable experiences at Hillsboro. A voice, a chuckle, a friendly smilefthese mo' mentos encompass the ecstasy of our senior year. This has been a time of aspiration, expectation, mo' mentary failure, and finally, a reward for the un' daunted-the sweet smell of success. As we have strived for success, so has the world about us. This was the year in which melody ref turned to music, when La Pizza and crew neck sweaters were the rage and when Mike Todd took 6 us Around The World In 80 Days . Sputniks and missles were sent into space, unemployment rose to five and onefhalf million and it was a dark day in Mudville when the Bums forsook Brooklyn. As we walk down the corridor of time, we are able to say that our final year at Hillsboro was a period of surprise, a year of grandeur, and a time of perception. On graduation as we are asked to ref ceive our diploma, there is a pause, blissful yet nos' talgic, as we recall the last melodious minutes of the prom, the tenseness of a crucial game. We say goodfby, not to an edifice, but to Hillsboro, our Alma Mater, for this is-fAS WE HAVE LIVED. CONTENT Features ........ JOHN KOEN, Principal B.A., M.A., Peabody College Facult Ranks High In the last sixteen years Hillsboro has risen to be' come a leading high school. Mr. Koen directed, and now maintains this accomplishment through his out' standing guidance of our everfincreasing enrollment. Three groups receive the interest and concern of Mr. Koen. Although teachers and parents are conf sidered important, Mr. Koen thinks Hrst of the stu' dents. Each individual finds him a most capable adviser. Maiiy worthwhile projects of the student body are encouraged by Mr. Koen's wholefhearted endorsement. To him the success of any student is a cherished joy. At weekly meetings Mr. Koen is constantly workf ing with teachers for the betterment of our education. At parent organizations, he draws our parents closer to our school activities. Mr. Koen, having promoted these interests. has brilliantly guided usf-As We Have Lived. 26 Dev Doster is assured by Mr. Koen that her credits will transfer to Sullins College, while Myron Manker awaits advice concerning the Naval Acad' emy at Annapolis. 11 .memnriam Miss ROBBIE PHILLIPS B.A., University of Georgia At only fortyfsix, Miss Robbie Phillips passed away. She suffered with a cerebral stroke while spending the past summer at her home in Calhoun, Georgia. In her last fourteen inspiring years Miss Phillips had lived as an outstanding algebra teacher at Hillsboro. She suffered from arthritis. The spirited op' timism with which Miss Phillips fought this ever present source of pain and affliction demonstrated her vigorous faith. Hopeful planning of the future was symbolic. In addition to her ability as a teacher of algebra, Miss Phillips contributed much more to Hillsboro. Many clubs were founded and became well estabf lished under her guidance. Her homerooms showed their well known loyalty, as they always ranked high in all school drives. For five consecutive years Miss Phillips sponsored The Hillsbwrro. She also attended many ball games and other school functions until her arthritis became acute five years ago. We students will never forget Miss Phillips as a sincere friend and brilliant humorist. just as we now recall her witty remarks, she not only remembered, but amazingly kept up with each of her past students. Students and faculty alike realize the great asset Hills' boro has lost. 27 The Facult JIM LEE ALLEN B.A., University of Tennesseeg M.A., Vanderbilt Uni- versityg Mathematicsg Civinette Club Sponsor. Thus composed, they discussed and planned the calendar and gave thought to pressing issues of the school. It has successfully sponsored the dances, promoted morning devotionals, and aided the P.T.A. in its projects. With the dignity and perseverance of the responf sible body it is, it has served the school well and guided the students through a prosperous yearff AS WE HAVE LIVED. Its memhers are cletlicated to its service as was demonstrated this year when they marched through six inches of mud in the Clinic Bowl to present to the spectators a wonderful halff time program. As well as the Clinic Bowl, they per' formed at all foothall games last fall, and a portion of them in the form ofthe Pep Band was present at all pep rallies to lead the Burro spirit. During hasketf hall season this year they sponsored the Bellevue game, the proceeds of which went to the Band to finance a tour in the spring. Needless to say. the Hillshoro Band has heen one of the hardest working organizations in the school. and they will always he rememheretl. and appreciated for their devotion to Hillshoro, and its students. The experience gained was well worth the time sacrificed to rehearsals and in making every Madrigal member to become a deeper person. Memf bers are provided by the boys in the Choir and any other boys who have an interest in music and a def sire to express themselves through this medium. BURROS 6 RYAN O A capacity crowd of 4,500 fans saw Hillsboro upset a favored Ryan eleven 6 O in the season's opener. The Irish took the opening kickoff and marched to their own 48 yard line. At this point Anthony Gill. Ryan halfback, was smacked hard by Burro defenders and fumbled to Al Gaines. Five plays later Carl McNeese sped 15 yards to paydirt and gave the Burros their margin of victory. The only serious Panther threat was thwarted in the third period on the Burro 12. It was a seefsaw battle all the way with Hillsboro having the upperhand. For his fine play Selden Longley was honored as Lineman of the Week. BURROS 38 GOODLETTSVILLE 6 BURROS 38 LAWRENCEBURG 6 In the second game a young hut scrappy Lawrenceburg team fell to the Burros 3Sf6. Phil Grammer took the opening kickoff and shortly thereafter the Green and Gold pushed across its first score. The Wild' cats retaliated quickly to knot the score 6'-6. The rest of the game the Burros scored practically at will, the subs playing a good deal of the last half. For the evening Carl McNeese and Danny Neal scored 3 T. D.'s apiece. Hillsboros touchdown twins , McNeese and Neal, once again led the way as the Burros won by the same score that they had the previous week, 38 6. Mac scored 3 times, one a 79 yarder, and Danny twice as they bowled over the Trojans. The reserves saw much action and Robert Woody raced for one of the T. D.'s with a stray Trojan aerial. Goodlettsville's flashy passing half was overshadowed by the Burro's 333 yards rushing. The Trojans lone tally came on the last play of the game against the subs. 152 ' BURROS 32 LITTGN 13 Even the most ardent fans were stunned as Hillsboro crushed favored Litton 32 f13. The Green and Gold led all the way as Don Brown and Jimmy Hicks scored once each. and Thau, Foxall and Gshorn were outstanding in the line. For his great performance joe Foxall was named Lineman of the Week. BURROS 28 COLUIVIBIA 6 After rolling to 21 0 halftime lead, the Burros slowed down and heat a very rugged Columhia team 28 6, Hillsboro wasted little time when Danny Neal flew 80 yards to paydirt with the opening kickoff as he scored the first of his 2 T. Dfs. Carl McNeese added two more, later in the game. A hlocked punt late in the fourth period accounted for the Lion's only score in the muddy duel. BU RROS 47 EAST 14 East's visions of an upset were shattered and their homecoming spoiled as the Burros slaughtered them, 47' 14. Except for their ace, john Griffin, who gained I I I yards, the Eagles were held to a -2 yards rushing while the Burros gained 352 yards. Neal and McNeese paced the scorf ing with 3 T. Dfs apiece while Phil Grammar, Terry Hunter, and jimmy Hicks scored one each. Hunter's was a 70 yard dash with a stolen pitch' out. The second team proved to be the regulars equal this time as they pushed the Eagles for two quick scores, 153 BURROS 54 CENTRAL 0 A listless Central team suffered their worst defeat in the history of the school as the Burros buried them 5410. The Burros hit hard and often to gain 497 yards and score 8 T. D.'s against the Tornadoes. Danny Neal zipped across the goal 5 times to take second place in the state scoring race. Although Carl McNeese and Steve Kinnard also scored, the highlight of the game came when twinkle toes Foxall raced 70 yards with a loose fumble to score. The Burros were forced to punt on first down late in the game to avoid running up the point total. ln the top AAA game of the year the mighty Burros sent the Big Red home crying with a 13---O defeat. The overflow crowd of about 7,000 was disappointed since they had hoped to see a contest. It was evident early in the game that the Maroons were overrated. It seemed apparent that the Big Red didn't have enough spirit to make hut one serious threat. After the hall had changed hands several times, Carl McNeese pushed over for the score on a fourth down play. Passes from Gary Hudson to jake Lihhey and from Don Brown to Carl McNeese set up this first tally. The Maroons hardly got past midfield the rest of the night. ln the third quarter Don Brown broke loose for 35 yards deep in MBA territory, but there was a penalty on the play. Phil Grammar likewise streaked for a 45 yard T. D., but again a red flag was on the field. The Maroons luck finally ran out when Phil again raced 60 yards to their own 5 yard line and the Burros went on to score. AllfCity Tommy Murphree was bothered all night due to the Burro line, but still managed to throw a few completions to Hillshoro defenders. Al Gaines, Bernie Thau, joe Foxall, Don Brown, Bill Settle, and Cary Hudson were a few of the Green and Gold standouts. When it was over, the Big Red was lucky and thankful that they had not heen beaten 4 or 5 touchdowns instead of onlyitwo. BURROS 40 DUPONT 6 A rugged Bulldog eleven and speedy Zollie Sircy held the Burros to a I4-e6 halftime lead. In the third period, however, Sircy ran into a host of green-jerseyed defenders and had to be taken to the sidelines. The Scarlets hit a good lick but they couldn't stop Danny and Carl, who scored three times each to turn the game into a rout. Ray Cooper ran well for Dupont, but his yardage was minute compared to the 322 yards that the Burro backs gained. CLINIC BOWL A mammoth Springfield forward wall and the worst playing conditions possible held the Burros to a O-O tie on Thanksgiving Day. Dudley Field was a quagmire as a torrential downpour came down all afternoon. Bone crushing Larry Mayhugh was held to practically a standstill by the Burros, but our backs could do little better against the Yellow Jackets. A punting duel between jerry Pearson and Cary Hudson was the high- light of the afternoon, Gary punted 7 times for a 39.3 yard average. The Green and Gold outgained the jackets 150 to 53 in yardage, but that didn't give us victory. Captain Don Brown gained 69 yards to take rushing honors in the game and was elected the most valuable player. Coach Nance was elected Coach of the Year. BURROS 33 COHN O In a game that had been postponed by flu, the Big Green turned in a sub'par performance but still won 33- O over Cohn. Both sides played sluggishly due to the oppressing heat and humidity of that Saturday afternoon. Despite this, Danny Neal raced for four tallies, Seldon Longley returned a Cohn pass for one, and the Burros had the AAA champion' ship in their hands. Tempers raged all afternoon as numerous personal foul penalties were called and several players ejected during the heated contest. After this victory the Burros were rated 1st in the entire state by the Litratings and Danny Neal was second in the state scoring race with 154 points. 155 J . milf FL . i.. ' . As far as seasonal play this year was concerned, the Burro cagers had only a mediocre 10011 record. The team was young with Charlie Walton and Jackie Brown being the only veterans until Don Brown was able to play. They won and lost in spurts, and the starting lineup was juggled constantly as Coach Harris sought a winning combination. The team boasted twin victories over Franklin, Donelson, and Antioch. They played powerful Litton and Central two close games and wound up the regular season play with a 2Ofodd point rout of Bellevue, a team to which they had lost earlier. The scoring attack was well balanced with over five players scoring within 20 points of each other in the final count. 158 MR. HARRIS. Coach Tourney Starters BOBBY CHAPMAN DON BROWN All-Tournament WOODY SHAFFER CHARLIE WALTON Captain LEE BALL GENE McNEIL Allffoumament The Burros came into the 19th District tournament picked to lose their first game. Then the dam broke! Dr, Lit. missed his pref diction by 39 points as our boys slaughtered Goodlettsville 56-20 and as Lee Ball bombed the hoops for 15 points. Gene McNeil and Bobby Chapman also hit in the double figures, and Chapman cleared the boards as well as directing floor play. In the quarterffinals the Burros caught secondfseeded Central and pulled the upset of the tourney by ousting the Tornadoes 50-'45. Chap- man held 6'6 Charles Gober to a meager 6 points while dominating the boards once again. The hero, however, was joe Myers, who came off the bench in the waning minutes to score five clutch points and bring the Burros from certain defeat to victory. One again it was joe, ikthe miracle man, who stole the ball from Madison's Ira Frye with six seconds remaining and hit a crip to give the Burros a hardffought 3463 win. joe was not the whole story, however, as Bobby Chapman far outrebounded the lanky Rams, and Charlie Walton tossed in several clutch shots to bring the Burros from a 7 point deficit. In the finals Dupont got redfhot and raced to a 2340 first quarter lead. The Burros outscored the Bulldogs the last three quarters but could never close the gap and fell 63- 52. Lee seared the nets for 19 points and the whole team played well. Bobby and Lee both made the allftournament team. In the opening game of the Region V tourney the Burros slacked off and thumped Waverly, 37f27. Bobby Chapman led the scoring attack with 11 tallies. The valiant Green and Gold finally fell to Cohn in the semiffinals, 45f4O. The team surged within two points in the last minutes, but finally fell. The neverfsayfdie spirit of this year's cagers should be an example for teams of the future. 159 MUD Front row: Mr. Coutras. Stafford lvIeNamee. The BfTeam is made up of about fifteen juniors and sophomores who have to be dressed and on the gym floor at 7 a.1n.
