That exciting year will be long remembered, for our new routine of high school life was very different and perhaps a little bewildering. However, we soon got in the swing and elected as our leaders, Bill Cochran, Marcia Nichol, Patricia Shelton, Nancy Bowers, and George Gaffney. Soon our first ball game and dance were over, and before we knew it we were sophomores. sophomore year We started our sophomore year by electing officers, David Moore, Lucy Tritschler, Nancy Headden, Betty Waggoner, and Billy lngraham. Then it happened. Our building was de- stroyed by fire. There were trying days for all Hillsboro students, and as sophomores we did our part to keep school spirit high. We finished the year at Belmont College, our temporary home, where we got a taste ot' college life. iunior year Continuing our residence at Belmont we, as juniors, chose Joe Lentz, Jerry Cornelius, Edie Hollabaugh, Yancey Richardson, and Bernard Akin as our leaders. That year the pace began to quicken as we participated in more of the school activities. Plays, athletics, and clubs offered many outlets for our varied interests. The Honor Society chose twenty-two members from our class showing that we still had time for our books. Student body elections came with the spring. From a field of twelve can- didates, Bill Cochran, Jack Farrar, Nancy Headden, and Lucy Tritschler were chosen to fill the officer positions. The year ended and we tried to realize that we would soon be seniors. senior year Our last year at Hillsboro had finally rolled around. How wonderful to begin it in a new, sparkling white building, all our own! This was our busiest year, but we were seniors and ready for anything. Our able leaders were David Moore, George Gaffney, Patricia Shelton, Betty Reynolds, Cameron Cooper, and Gilbert Dorland. We had a good year in sports with Bill Cochran, Billy lngraham, and Jim Kennon as captains of the football team and .lack Farrarfor the basketball team. The girl's basketball team with co-captains Nancy Headden and Yance Richardson captured four trophies and many headlines, and finished the season with a fine record of twenty-four wins and one loss. Dorothy Smith was named homecoming queen and Edie Hollabaugh, Nancy Headden, Lucy Tritschler, and Betty Waggone composed her court. Billy lngraham and Peggy Adams were elected King and Queen of Hearts. The senior play, forensic meets, school publications, math contests, student council projetcs, dances, ball games, and, of course, term papers kept our days busier than ever before. How- ever, we still found time in the spring to present the best Burro Blowout yet. Betty Reynolds upheld the highest four-year scholastic average and was Valedictorian. Joe Lentz received the Salutatory honors. Thirty-seven carefully chosen seniors received membership in the Burro Circle. As our senior year drew to a close, we, the class of '55, regretted leaving, and we knew that our days spent at Hillsboro would be long remembered and always cherished. 46 I JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS RONNIE YATES ...................... Representing their class in the field of athletics were such outstanding players as Channing Workman and Bubba Logan on the football team, while Jack DeWitt and Jimmy Stooke helped lead the Burro Basketball team to Memphis. Such stars as Lynn Henderson, Connie Siegrist and Betty Hatcher helped the Hillsboro girls capture their first NIL Championship, as Margaret Bulord and Martha Simmons helped to cheer them on. Betty Edge, Miss Hillsboro for 1955, competed against Martha Saeger and Emily Harsh and became runner-up in the Miss Nashville High School Contest The Juniors Hnished the year with a very successful Prom put over by much hard vvorlc lin illiemnriam MARY SUE WOMACK 1937-1955 This year Hillsboro lost one of her finest leaders, Mary Sue Womack, Experiencing the fire, the two years at Belmont, and the return to our new building, Mary Sue exemplified beyond reproach the true spirit of Hillsboro. She was outstanding among the leaders who helped to hold the school together, Following two years of constant service and loyalty, Mary Sue was elected Secretary of the Junior Class, She also received the coveted honors of membership in the Civinette Club and the National Honor Society.
