Throughout the past year it has become evident to all Hillsboro students that ou school is dependent largely on the generous help given it by our many friends. lt is with sincere appreciation that we dedicate this nineteen fifty-four HILLSBURRO to those who helped us through a difficult period. ' 5 To you, our many friends and helpers, we the senior class have given our best efforts as a small token of our gratitude for your devotion and support. PURPUSES OF AN ANNUAL An annual is built, not made. Constructed from words and pictures of the year's activities, its design reflects the individuality of the school producing it. Building a yearbook teaches the staff leadership, business management, and responsibility. Outsiders see through an annual, as through a window, every clay school life. Students and alumni find reminders in an annual of all the little happenings that have been their part in fash- ioning it. Welhope that this annual will fulfill these intended purposes for all who turn through its pages. Be- sides serving as chief executive of the school, he also often acted as personal adviser to individual students, helping them become integrated in the school pro- gram. Mr. Koen was always ready with a word of praise for those who had in any way worked for the school, and his encouragement spurred all Hillsboro on to greater efforts. We greatly appreciate his untiring work toward holding the student body together, and feel that everyone found him to be an inspiration during this trying year. MR. All your danger is in discord, Therefore be at peace henceforward, And as brothers live together. -Longfellow Although the time and place was changed, clubs gathered from the various parts of our campus on schedule, and worked in union without discord. Although the staffs had to scatter to all points of the compass to serve the student body, they helped to unite us, prevent discord, and caused us to live as brothers together. How ever, they all have co-operated in making our disunited Hillsboro one school. They have as their goal developing a dynamic Hillsboro in the wonderful new building which is rapidly nearing completion. The union of community, faculty, and students which has brought these classes so far will insure a wonderful tomorrow. We build the ladder by which we rise From the lowly earth to the vaulted skies, And we mount to its summit round by round. -Holland -71 STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Leading us ably through this year of hardships were our Student Body officers. The school's goal was set at 3,000 books. Mrs. Thackston's class took an early lead but was soon passed by Mr. Apple's homeroom. After much work and bitter competition Mrs. Thackston's room was de- clared the winner with 3,926 books. Mr. Apple's class was second with 3,370. Wayne Crawford, a member of the winning homeroom, led the school in number of books brought in. The two leading home- rooms were credited with 91 per cent of the total for the entire school. MATHEMATICS TEAMS ALGEBRA I TOURNAMENT TEAM Cameras cannot catch the drama, the excitement, the activity in the human brain as it meets, struggles with, and overcomes mathematical problems. No bands play, no cheering squad leads the roar of the crowd as the math team scores. Yet after sports and entertainments are finished, and the tumult and shouting dies, the spectator leaves a structure made possible by mathematics, drives a cor over a road to a house, all made possible by a knowledge of mathe- matics. The new building which will house our student body next year owes its construction to mathematical fac- tors. The list is endless. ALGEBRA ll TOURNAMENT TEAM Therefore, Hillsboro is proud of our mathematics de- partment and of Miss Allen and Miss Phillips whose thorough and efficient teaching have made the department strong, and of the newer teachers who have contributed to these high standards. The math department offers a full course in business arithmetic, and four years of traditional college prepara- tory mathematics: algebra l, algebra ll, plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Since i952 Hillsboro has participated in the Middle- Tennessee invitational mathematics tournament held at Austin Peay State College, and has won the championship cup in algebra and advanced mathematics each year. Also each year, a Hillsboro student won the medal for the top individual score. Burros of 11953 ,QQQ FOOTBALL SEASON WON THREE, LOST FIVE, TlED ONE Hillsboro's Green and Gold football squad of 1953 had courage and stamina that are always with a young team. Underclassmen were the rule rather than the exception. lf these underclassmen continue to improve, as they have done under the patient and energetic guidance of Coach Bill Jones and his aides, the Burros of 1954 will be a truly superior team. With ear-splitting support of the enthusiastic and faithful supporters, the Burros of 1953 attained an enviable record in that they were never held scoreless, although playing some of the best teams in Tennessee. Always there was enough punch at the crucial moment to cross the opponent's double stripe in all nine games. Highlights of the season from the standpoint of all-round team performance were the games against lsaac Litton, Central and Battle Ground Academy. ln defeat, tie and victory, respectively, the Burros played all-out. From the standpoint of a home field for games, the Burros were orphans of the league but our supporters followed the team wherever it went. All looked forward to a return to the home gridiron in 1954. LEFT TO RIGHT: FRONT ROW, George Gaffney, Leoni Boucher, Eddie Hart, Jack Farrar, Gene Hensley, Wayne Wilson. BACK ROW: AI Goodpasture, Manager, Channing Workman, Billy Cochran, Henry Bland, Curtis Jones, David Johnson,'-Capt. Bobby Hatcher and Coach Bill Mac Jones. VARSITY Basketball reigned supreme at Hillsboro High this year as the mighty Burros roared through all oppo- sition for 23 straight victories, including three l9th Dis- trict Tournament contests. The entire season's record included a loss to Donelson in the opening game, and a Region V tournament defeat by Montgomery Bell Acad- emy to close the year for Hillsboro. Regular schedule play included 20 wins and one loss, earning undisputed possession of the Nashville Inter- scholostic League championship trophy for the first time in Hillsboro High history. lt was a tremendous year for a squad that returned only one starting player from the previous year, stalwart Bobby Hatcher who was chosen Most Valuable Player in the N.l.L., and on all-state and all-district selections. Hatcher, standing 6 ft. 5 in. scored 552 points in the entire season. Sharing honors with him on the all-star team for the l9th District was Henry Bland, also a senior, David Johnson, another senior played out his time as starting forward. Two iuniors, Jack Farrar and Billy I WI Cochran, held down regular positions and made week- ly check lists during the season. rg Other seniors on the squad were Gene Hensley and Wayne Wilson. All other members are expected to be back next year, but they will be under a new coach, as Coach Bill Mac Jones is giving up Burro basketball coaching after establishing the most outstanding record in the N.l.L., a four-year record of: 93 victories, 23 defeats, two state tournament teams, one winning fourth place, and three regional tournament teams, one winning the championship. Taking over varsity basketball duties for l954-5 will be Coach Hale Harris, who has served as basketball B team coach, assistant in football and varsity baseball coach. The Burro record for the last two seasons was more remarkable in view of the fact that the team had no home court, practicing and playing home games at Central High School. Student support for the team was vigorous and sustained, with cheer- leaders in action at all games. BOBBY HATCHER RIPS FOR TWO. Perhaps the most thrilling battle of the entire year was a hairline victory over DuPont, 1953 state champions, in the DuPont gym- nasium. That struggle was nip-and-tuck from the opening tipott and going became rough indeed late in the game. Bobby Hatcher fouled out with less than three minutes to play, ioining DuPont's Donnell and Wright who were already out. Channing Workman replaced Hatcher, but went to guard with Jack Farrar shifting to forward and Henry Bland taking over the center post. Workman hit a 20-footer to tie the score. Cochran followed with two free throws to put the Burros ahead 75-73. Bland grabbed a rebound after a DuPont desperation shot and the victory was won. Close games prevailed during the latter part of the season, the 19th District championship win being a 51-49 decision over Donel- son. Earlier the Burros had assured themselves the N.I.L. title by trouncing Isaac Litton 44 to 35 despite some intense slow motion basketball attempted by the Lions. Announcement of Coach Jones' retirement from varsity basketball leadership came after end of the season. Principal John Koen said the move was mutually agreed by all concerned to help equalize the duties and responsibilities ot the coaching staff. The Jones record for four seasons with the Burro cagers showed: MR. HESSEY REPAIRS NET. Central brought the ball down and set up a possession type ball with the plays being called with chalk and blackboard by Coach Garland Russell. We waited them out only to find ourselves behind at the end of the first quarter. Half-way through the second period Coach Bill Mac Jones called out the dogs. By half time we were two ahead. ln the third quarter we led by lO or i2 points most of the way. Hatcher and Bland shot well, but their re- bounding was definitely the difference between victory and defeat. Hillsboro 67, Donelson 54. ln the Burros' first game with the Dons, they were soundly defeated. They were back for revenge. At stake was the leadership of the l9th Dis- trict and the question of who would be top seeded in the tournament. Bobby Hatcher needed only five points to set a new N.I.L, record for points breaking Frank Davis' record. Davis was slated to guard Bobby. The first quarter started slow with Hatcher missing several crip-shots. We finally got rolling and we were not to be stopped. The re- bounding was vicious between Davis l6-4l and Hatcher l6-5l. When the final buzzer sounded the Burros were thirteen points ahead and Hatcher had tallied up thirty- five points to set the new N.l.L. record for the regular season with 479. Hillsboro was now topseeded in the l9th District Tournament. y gg? 4,0 xxx QQ? sx xv x Q ip. A.. Ably coached by Mr. Hale Harris, the baseball team this year has showed much promise. ln their first game this year on April llth, they defeated Bellevue l4-5. Boasting a starting team of three sophomores and three iuniors, the Burros only had three seniors on the squad. Although very scattered, they made good use of the practice facilities offered them by the Jewish Community Center, and the home games were played at Central.
