But We are different from the boys and girls she knew. Because We think that we have a Wonderland that will be as surprising to her as the one she visited, We are taking her and some of her companions through E.H.S. Land. We Will show her the people who administer our school, the people who teach us, the boys and girls who are our classmates. We will show her, too, the classrooms where we Work and study, the organizations We belong to, the good times we have, and the sports we participate in and enjoy watching. We are confident that she will find much to amaze her, much to marvel at in this Wonderland we love. Perhaps, by seeing it through her eyes, our eyes, too, will be more able to see some of the Wonders we sometimes take for granted. l , 1. 1 t e F X A l ,D i :Z A g ' .Q 'l' 'i l I -'LTL' 'I 1,4-L, f W if E U , , i U L. On a bright, sunshiny day in September, 1949 Csome 200 bewildered freshmenl we entered Elgin High School to become the members of the Class of '52. Our class quickly revealed its leadership under the guidance of our class sponsor, Miss Martha Iones. We were one of the first classes to become organized during our freshman year, electing as our officers: Pat Weeks, president: Wallace Gifford, vice-president: Nancy Miller, secretary: and Henry Pear- sall, treasurer. Amidst a typical autumn theme of corn shocks and pumpkins, we held our first mixer, Pumpkin Prance. Later in the year we invited our future classmates froml Abbott to attend our first class party, May Daze. During our sophomore year, the class enrollment reached its high of 372 members. We chose Donne Plote, president: Don Valentine, vice-president: Rosemary Mortellaro, secre- tary: and Sue Linder, treasurer. We called our class party the Fifty-two Fantasy. Our class sweaters of hunter green and white, our rings, a white carnation for our flower, and our motto, Today's effort builds tomorrow's success , were all selected. We became juniors at the mid-century. Fred Steffen was elected president: Allen Skjol- dager, vice-president: Sue Linder, secretary: and Elizabeth Shock, treasurer. Iunior Inn- Revue was chosen for our mid-semester party. Our junior play, Green Stockings, was a tremendous hit. The Iunior-Senior Prom, Moonlight Magic , was the major co-operative activity with the seniors. At last we became the upperclassmen, seniors. Dave Nelson was elected president: Donne Plote, vice-president: Sue Linder, secretary: and Pat Weeks, treasurer. Mr. John Conzelman was appointed the assistant sponsor for the senior year. Our Homecoming will long be remembered as one of the best. At Touchdown Tempo , the homecoming dance, Fred Steffen and Sue Linder were crowned King and Queen. Years Ago will be recorded in school history as one of the best senior plays. Candy Cane Capers was selected as the name for our Christmas class party. The ingenuity of our class members was cleverly shown in the costumes worn to the Maskapade , a dance sponsored by us for the entire student body. Class Day, Baccalaureate, the Prom, and all other Commencement activities will never be forgotten. Awards Day and Honors Day reviewed our achievements. We ,tried to be constructive leaders so that our record of achievements, particularly in the field of scholarships, music, dramatics, speech and athletics, will make the class of 1952 one to be long remembered, 24 Clam 0 l95 DARLENE MAE BACAK - Dee Dee Treble 15 Aeolian 25 Mixed Chorus 35 G.A.A. 4. The student body elects the officers: each home room elects a representative. These students make up the Student Council. lt is governed by an Executive Council composed of the elected officers, the runners-up, the class presidents, and the co-chairmen of the Commissions. This year's Student Council program began with the impressive induction ceremony at which Dr. Carl F. Robinson of Northwestern University was the speaker. The Thanks- giving dance, Stunt Night, the Polio Fund Drive, and the Courtesy Drive were some of the activities undertaken. As one of the leading student governments in our state, our Council is often asked how it can possibly accomplish so much. The answer lies in our inner organizations, the 68 -lnluu W , A flue oice 0 . The Building and Grounds Commission takes care of the clean-up cam- paigns, the traffic problem, and similar ones. The Social Commission sponsors Stunt Night, the dances, and other social events. The Service Commission plans the drive for polio funds, the courtesy campaign, sends cards to the sick, and supplies ushers for vari- ous occasions. The Research and Publicity Commission sees that posters and decorations are provided when necessary and keeps the Council bulletin board interesting and timely. This year Ria Hoffman of Germany has been one of us through the combined efforts of all the Commissions. Under the guiding hand of Mr. Wilson and the leadership of the Executive Coun- cil, the Student Council goals are reached: social activities flourish: improvement proj- ects constantly better our school: smaller organizations receive support: and, perhaps most important, the government of our school is participated in by the students. Can there be a better method of practicing democracy than by having cc student govern- ment which is truly the voice of the students? 69 his e Choo! ewripaper H irrora ville ewA Upper left-Nancy Nielsen, business manager, confers with first semester advertisers Glenda Miller and Duane Schuldt. This usually means a change of staff personnel each semester. The business staff does not change, as it is an advantage to the advertisers for it to remain the sarne. During the first semester Peggy Fritz served as editor. Sally McBride became second semester editor in chief. Nancy Nielsen was business manager for the year. The first semester advertisers were Glenda Miller and Duane Schuldtg Mary Lou Haeger and Ioan Wilkinson succeeded to the second semester adver- tising post. Carol Sayland served on the first semester staff. The Mirror had to retrench this year, putting out 14 issues instead of its usual 16. Miss Enid Burns is sponsor of The Mirror. 70 he . ear oo , aroon Before school closes in the spring the Maroon staff for the following year is chosen tentatively and ideas for the next book are discussed. Work begins early in the fall with the first major problem-the selec- tion of a theme. From then on the staff is constantly busy. The adver- tising staff solicits patrons: the edi- torial staff plans the book's contents: the art staff Works on drawings to carry out the theme. Pictures and data are collected: photographers are interviewed and schedules for pictures are arranged. The sales campaign is planned and launched. By the first part of April the year- book, with its pictures and carefully checked copy and data, is rushed to the publishers. Only then can the staff relax a bit, in preparation for the big task of distribution in late May. Upper-Co-editors: Ianice Newby and Karen Chapman consult with the sports editor, Dick Brant. The Elgin High School Concert Orchestra, directed by Miss Marion Lattey, contributes much to EHS and Elgin. Last October the orchestra took part in Operatic Nights and in December presented the Christmas con- cert and the Christmas portion of The Messiah, with the A Cappella. ln the spring, contests called EHS music students. In May all string players took part in the Annual Fox Valley Festival Orchestra with guest con- ductor Richard Church from Madison University. This year the contest for soloists was held at Dundee, and the state contest for solo winners and ensembles at Champaign. Small ensembles from the orchestra played between 40 and 50 times during the year at weddings, church organizations, and local civic groups. A. Hill, is one of the outstanding music organizations at EHS. It is a choir of 94 voices and is made up ot sophomore, junior, and senior boys, and junior and senior girls who have some musical background : they are selected by try outs. Operatic Nights, the Christmas Concert, The Messiah, the Easter Sunrise Service, and an assem- bly are traditional A Cappella events. The choir sings in the Spring Music Festival, the Fox Valley Music Festival and tre- quently is called upon to present programs for civic groups and the churches of Elgin. For these latter programs, some of the many smaller units of the choir usually sing. Fred Steffen is A Cappella president, Meredith Parsons is vice president, and Bruce Pillinger is secretary. There are 94 sophomore girls in the Aeolian Choir, which meets four days a Week during the noon hour.
