Would the other stu- dents like you, would your teachers be friend- ly, and how could you ever hope to meet so many people? lf you were a freshman last year you know that you have made many new friends and also when you look in the mirror you see that your physical character- istics have changed, you have probably grown a little since last fall. lf you are a senior think back to how many friends you have acquired in your four years of high school and how your appearance has changed. The same is true of Hillsboro Union High School. Because we have grown, a shift has been made from the TYV League to a league composed of schools with larger enrollments, the Metro League. We shall retain our old friends and add to them new ones from the Metro League. We shall do this because we know that friends and friendships make life more worthwhile. Mrs. Young teaches Ameri- can history and civics, and Mr. Wienecke teaches driver's training. They are a guide to the students at Hilhi, advising and help- ing them with physical, emotional or per- sonal problems. Each morning they are in their offices checking attendance or arrang- ing the pamphlets provided in the counselors room for students to read informing and di- recting them on teen-age activites or voca- tional interests. Besides these important jobs they also work with the Boys' and Girls' leagues bring- ing Hilhi's student body closer together. QTX ADMINISTRATION 5 I fav' 3 is 47' .ui As the Seniors of '57 look back on the past four years of school we can see how we have grown up-not only physically, but mentally and morally. We have made many friends which sadly enough, we may never see again after graduation. Nevertheless the Seniors of '57 would like to show their appreciation to Hilhi by saying thanks and by trying to live up to the standards we have acquired in the past four wonderful years. Commercial Courses Become Backbone of Business World Typing, the most popular business course, had an enrollment of 295 this year. These 295 stu- dents strive to secure not only speed, but accuracy. After a couple months of practice, they leam to type business letters and forms. Second-year typ- ing is very similar to first-year except it is de- signed with the future secretary in mind. Shorthand, a method of rapid writing achieved by using certain strange curleques and symbols, is one way in which a student may achieve speed in his writing. GORDON ANDERSON, Commercial NORA LEE CRAVEN, Commercial GRACE PALMER, Commercial Mr. Anderson's bookkeeping classes learn the exact procedures in which to record all the busi- ness transactions of a specific company. Credit, debit, ledger, account balance, and journalizing are just a few of the many terms bookkeeping stu- dents become familiar with throughout the year. Business machines, taught by Mrs. Palmer, of- fers the opportunity to become acquainted with the machines which all secretaries should be able to operate efficiently. Some of these machines are the adding machine, dictaphone, calculdor. dupli- cator, and stencil machine. 3 EL, E Miss Palmer shows her class the operation ot the ditto machine. f' Miss Cravan sets the clock for a timed writing. ,- it X if is ADMiNisTRA'rloN 21 Vocatuonal Skulls Assust March of Progress Jet age performance has been realuzed un Mr Thomas vocatuonal agruculture classes thus year The og classes broke a record wuth the largest enrollment un the hustory of Hulhu 8l students 33 of whom were freshmen The ag enrollment us one of the largest un the state Ag students do even more than learn how to farm Some of the actuvutues un whuch they engage are publuc speak mg parluamentary law contests showmg at county and state faurs showung at Pacufuc lnternatuonal Lwestock Exposutuon and luvestock uudgung con tests profutable skull The equupment un the shop turns out precusuon made artucles after a suffucuent amount of skull has been developed Cedar chests coffee tables end tables and desks made by the advanced shop students provude an unspuratuon for the begunnung manual traunung student Mr Ruuds woodworkung classes master a Mr Ruud and Martun examune the d Ed l over a woodworkung problem suze at a board un general shop Mr Turnbull an smu e usnnquq EARRING K fish fl-Elma. -Bill huts O O O .
