A A W, El' ' r 1 SX init 5 fi x J Q.. 1' 4.- ,f 1-3 1, I1 THE I967 ECHO HILLSBORO PUBLIC SCHOOLS HILLSBORO, WISCONSIN FOREWGRD - A school building is con- structed of steel and cement, strong and permanently estab- lished, but it is designed to ac- commodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year buses empty their loads each morning and people stream in waves into the hallways and classrooms. To the rhythm of slamming locker doors, tides of students wash in and out of the TABLE OF CONTENTS Introductory Pages Administration Seniors Underclassmen Junior High Section Sports Activities Organizations 97 - 106 Elementary Grades 107 - 115 Outlying Schools 116 - 119 2 rooms and corridors and finally back to the buses, leaving the building empty. Carl Sandburg in his poem Sky- scraper, says It is the men and women, boys and girls, so poured in and out all day that give a building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories. As each individual forms a part of the mass, so each personality contributes -to the whole of our school's soul - that abstract thing we call school spirit. Soon we, the class of'67, will be leav- ing Hillsboro High. With us we will take our individual dreams, thoughts, and memo- ries, many of which were mold- ed in these halls and rooms. Before we leave we present the 1967 ECHO, a pictorial history of our senior year at Hillsboro High School. IN MEMORIAM . . . JESSE L. SHERMAN The loss ofjesse L. Sherman was a great one to our school and community. He had dedicated his life to young people. His contributions as a teacher and as a member of the Board of Education were priceless. Though he is not with us, the knowledge and understanding which he gave us will always remain. ft' ,i WE DEDICATE . JOHN G. WANLESS We the class of 1967 dedicate our yearbook to Mr. John Cv. Wanless, in grati- tude for his dedication to us. As a teacher, he has given us knowledge which we shall use throughout our livesi As our advisor, he has given us assistance which we shall always appreciate. MR. WANLESS . FILLER Secretary This fine annual contains the record of your group and individual school accomplishments during the past year. I hope each of you can look back at the year with few regrets and many fond memories. Wherever you go and whatever you do, may your experience here be of value to you. Sincerely, Z7 9, G. 1. shoid OUR PRINCIPAL MR. RICHARD O. BOUDREAU Only four years ago you entered Hillsboro High School. In those four short years have come many changes - new teachers, a new principal, a new building, an improved curriculum, new friends, added responsibilities, new or altered values and outlooks. This process of change does not end here, nor does your need to remain open-minded, critical, and prudent. What has been the point of these four years? Of these last twelve years? Have'you attended school to learn dates, to learn to read and write, to learn to type? All of these are important, but they do not in themselves justify the expenditure of money the people of this district have made. Can't they expect more from you? Can't they expect a development of personality, of character, of temperament that mark each of you as mature? Can,t they expect a measured, reasonable outlook on life, an adaptability in the face of change, a certain sense of optim- ism from you? You are their final product. What can they expect of you? Sincerely, MRS. EILEEN C. WUQLLE MRS. CORRINE P. WITTE R. O. Boudreau Secretary Secretary BOARD OF EDUCATION RAYMOND KAHLER MRS. JOSEPHINE PACL KEITH FISKE DR. T. E. Bos'roN NEIL NEINAST ELGIN sNoREK ple whose job it is to supervise the Hillsboro School District. Mr. Milfred and Mr. Wanless served as our class advisors. Early in autumn we received our shiny new class rings, which distinguished us as 'cupperclassmenf' Carole Erlandson and Roger Fish were the Junior Homecoming royalty. January 2, 1966, marked a big event in the history of the Class of 1967. On this day, after Christmas vacation, we began attending classes in the new Hillsboro High School. The big event of our junior year came on Saturday, April 30, 1966. Many weeks of preparation led to Some Enchanted Eveningf, our Junior Prom. The gym was decorated in a pastel color scheme with a flower garden and a silver ball reflecting twinkling lights over the scene.-After being crowned beneath a canopy, with a sparkling silver fountain as background, Queen Linda Wuolle and King Lewis Haugh led the Grand March. Larry Woodbury and his orchestra provided music for the event. September, 1966, marked the beginning ofour final year at HHS. The Senior Class officers were Presi- dent, Larry Rott, Vice-President, David Fanta, Secretary, Barbara Pliner, and Treasurerhlulie Tydrich. Student Council representatives were Greta Leverenz and Larry French. Again, our class advisors were Mr. Milfred and Mr. Wanless. Members of the Senior class held many of the positions of leadership during this final year. Curt Mar- shall and Janice Strait served as editors of the 1967 Echo. Rita Stekel was chosen to represent Hillsboro in the Snowflake Ski Queen Contest, and Patricia Braithwaite received the DAR Award. Curt Marshall and Nancy Baltz reigned, as King and Queen, over the 1966 Homecoming festivities. Larry Rott and his date shared honors at the Junior Prom. 32 SENIOR ACTIVITIES BALDWIN, BILL: Student Council, 4, F.F.A., 1, 2, 3, 4, Officer, 4, Band, 1. Beginning the season with four returning lettermen put Tiger hopes for a high conference finish on shaky ground. Swift development ofinexper- ienced players was a must. Key injuries depleted the ranks of experience and the season became one of building for the future. The seniors were willing and aggressive and gave a good example to the younger boys. The underclassmen worked hard and many showed by their performances that good things are in store for the future. The Hillsboro Tigers repeated as Scenic Central Champions this season sporting a 16-0 conference tally. This is the sixth time in nine years Hillsboro teams have finished on top in the conference standings. Throughout the season the Tigers boasted ratings in the Little Ten g at one time reaching the num- ber two position. Fine coaching by Mr. Tangney, talent, and hard work enabled our team to reach such goals this year. The backbone of the team consisted of seven seniors, but five underclassmen gained substantial experience for the future. Track is a sport which requires a great deal of strength and endurance. Boys who participate in this sport dedicate many hours of strenuous practice in preparation for their particular event. Special recognition should be given who excel in this sport, such as Jake Harris, who did an outstandingjob in the mile run. Tony Fronk placed high in the shot put, as did Steve Daines in the high jump, Al Kaukl also did a fine job in discus throwing. Leverenz, Student Director, Mrs. Staffon, Director, Strait, Student Director. THE STORY OF THE PLAY Here is the rootinlest, tootin'est, funniest satire on the Old West to ever gallop across a stage. Now it all started when Ambrose Groves and Bert Miller, a couple of would be vaudeville co- medians, were crossing the desert, headin' Galiforny way. But right out in the middle of said desert, they were booted off of the train and onto their own, 'cause someone had picked their pockets - the pockets where their tickets and all of their money was. So picking themselves up, they start trudging across the desert, and in a couple of days they blow into Dead Man's Gulch, the wildest, the wooliest, the roughest spot in the whole West, where everybody fights every- body else, and blood flows like Old Faithful. Now it so happens that Homer the Kid and his pal, Gun Smoke Garter, the two most hard- ridin' cow-pokes whatever straddled a saddle, were expected to breeze into town at any mo- ment, to quell the shootinl. So when Ambrose and Bert hobble in, they are mistaken for the Westls most fearless cowpunchers, and oooh, what happens to them! Ambrose is taken for the hero, Homer the Kid, and from there on out, it,s a knockdown on the stage, and a dragout of laughs from the audience, ,cause bungling Ambrose, hero Ambrose, winds up by doin' every- thing opposite from what the cowpunchers' union calls for. He gets everything in a terrible state. He doesnlt get the goods on the crooked sheriff, he,s completely beaten and soundly trounced by Hoot Owl Pete, and he,s practically hung by Stinkweed. He doesn't get the hero- ine, Nancy, either. But he does get things in the most devastating of devastating messes. P- GOMMITTEES: LEFT TO RIGHT: P. Lind,J. Fronk, G. Boldon, M. Fitch, R. Stekel, G.
