Neinast, P. Bloor, L. Wilson The study of foreign languages is becoming increasingly important in our modern day world. Amazingly rapid communications with even the remotest areas of the world are bringing people everywhere closer and closer together. It is important that people should be able to com- municate directly with one another in order to bring about better understanding between nations, and help bring about an abundant supply of cultural and scientific exchange. The foreign language program emphasizes the importance of self-directed, independent study in accomplish- ing the work of the course. Instructors Mrs. Reierson, Spanish: Mrs. Mehnes, Latin: Mrs. Zin- gale, Russian: Miss Vass, German: Mrs. Geller, French JOHN BLA DL Zz K f ANITA HEIDENREICH Last summer, three of our students went to the Badger Boys' State and Badger Girls' State, held at the Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin and the University of Wiscon- sin at Madison, respectively. This program is designed to prepare the young for their roles as the future leaders of the complex and challenging world of tomorrow, through a thorough understanding of the workings of our government, particularly on the city, county, and state levels. ROGER l-IAUGH F 'rfb V. W 42:2 MARY DOSCH This summer, two of our students, Jeanne Peterson and Anita Heidenreich, spent two weeks at the big b1ast known as the Music Clinic. Music Clinic gives the young musician an excellent chance to play with hundreds of other talented mu- sicians in an atmosphere char- ged with enthusiasm and inter- est. Besides giving the student background knowledge in mu- sic theory, conducting, and appreciation, Music Clinic also has its social aspects. JEANNE PETERSON RP ' ACTIVITIES Prom 1 964 The enchanted evening we had all been waiting for arrived on April 17, 1964. The auditorium stood dressed and waiting. Dancing blue and white streamers across the ceiling set the Hawaiian mood. Bamboo booths and a green island added to the set- ting. On stage colored lights illuminated ashimmering array of ocean creatures. Then the magic moment: Dolores Kolowrar was crowned Queen by Sally Dechant, Leo Fronk became King of the 1964 Prom as Roger Stanek placed the crown on his head. The strains of Some Enchanted Evening our theme, played by Bobby Lori and his orchestra, lead the Grand March, The crown bearers, Donnie Hammer and Terry Byington, followed by the royal couple wound their way through the auditorium as the captivated audience watched. In the march, Roger Stanek and Sally Dechant, King and Queen of the 1963 Prom: Russell Daines and Janis Hansbery, the Senior representativesg Steven Daines and Paula Clark, the Sophomore representatives: along with Curtis Marshall and Patricia Braithwaite, the Freshmen representatives followed in stately fashion. As the march progressed other hand- somely attired couples joined in the festivity. The evening sped on and soon the music and dancing was over, but the memories were just beginning. During this brief span of time, interest in this sport has grown by leaps-and- bounds. Under the able coaching of Mr.Daryl.l Amberg, a greater percentage of matches were won, and more athletes became a part of this young, but enthusiastic team. Although the squad did not chalk up a great number of victories throughout the season, much invaluable experience and know-how was joined. And it is certain the boys will carry with their fond memories of the many hours of vigorous, but enjoyable practice. We are proud to say that Hillsboro wrestling definitely took an upward stride during the 1964-65 season. Coach Amberg COACHES: Pat Tangney and David Gammon Date Nov. Dec. Dec. Dec, Dec. Dec, Ian. ELIZABETH SCHALLER As we pause before our graduation to seriously consider the extent of the education we have just received, our thoughts tu.rn to one teacher whose enthusiasm for leam- ing has made a lasting impression upon us. We, the Senior Class of 1965, dedicate this annual with pride and respect to our English teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Schaller. Under the direction of Mr. David Pederson the SENIOR CLASS of 1965 presented the three act play, Teahouse Of The August Moon Written for the stage by John Patrick who based the script on the novel by Vern Sneidcr, The Teahouse of the August Moon is one of the most successful comedies of recent years. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1954 and played for 1,027 consecutive per- formances on Broadway. The play concerns an American occupation unit that is sent to Okinawa after the Second World War. The purpose, in Colonel Wainwright Purdythe IlI's own words is, My job is to teach these natives the meaning of democracy, and they're going to learn democracy if I have to shoot every one of them! The Okinawans prove not only enlightened, but enlightening. At the center of this comic meeting of East and West is the interpreter Sakini. As both commenter and sympathizer he is an amusing, benevolent opportunist who plays the fool and fools the military bureaucracy. A hilarious play is the result. After a couple of weeks to get ac- quainted we elected Dan Holtz, president: John Levenhagen, vice-president: Mary Dosch, secretaryg and David Johnson, treasurer. Lyle Janousek and Sherry McCoy represented our class in the Student Council and Rosemary Hora and Lyle Janousek represented the freshmen on the 1961 Homecoming court. ln the spring Dan Holtz and Dolores Kolowrat were the representatives at the Junior Prom. Mr. Duffrin and Mr. Schauf were our advisors. When we returned as sophomores, we chose Dick Fawcett as president, Sharon Neinast, as vice-president, Eileen Benish as secretary, and Dolores Kolowrat as treasurer. Jeanne Subera and John Bladl served on the Stu- dent Council. Jo Ann Connors and Leo Fronk were representatives on the Homecoming court, and Dick Fawcett and Sharon Liska were sophomore royalty at the Junior Prom. Attendants at the Sweetheart Dance were Alice Rott and Brian Schell. Mrs. Lindsay and Mr. McCabe were our advisors. As Juniors we received our class rings which bound us together as a class. For this very busy year our of- ficers were: Leo Fronk, president: Lyle Stanek, vice-presidentg Carolyn Smith, secretaryg and Dick Fawcett, treasurer. Pat Bloor and Dave Stanek were elected to Student Council and Tom Fron and Carolyn Smith repre- sented our class at Homecoming. Leo Fronk and Dolores Kolowrat reigned over our Junior Prom. The gym, decorated to the theme of Some Enchanted Evening in blue and white with an illuminated stage, took on a royal atmosphere for the memorable evening. Mrs. Lindsay and Mr. Amberg were our advisors. During the sum- mer Mary Dosch attended Badger Girl's State and Roger Haugh and John Bladl went to Badger Boy's State. When we returned as Seniors in the fall of 1964, we elected Tom Fronk as president, David Stanek as vice- president, Mary Dosch as secretary, and Lyle Stanek as treasurer. Pat Bloor and Jim Vodak were elected to represent the Senior Class in the Student Council. Mrs. Lindsay and Mr. Amberg again took on the responsibili- ties of advising us through the last year. At the Homecoming dance, the climax of the football season, King Lyle Janousek and Queen Charlene Johnson graced the dance floor. Tom Fronk and his date were representatives at the Spring Prom. In our Senior year David Stanek was elected Student Council president, Bill Carpenter served as the editor of the Echo, our yearbook, Arda Hansbery won the D.A.R. award, and Sharon Liska was our repre- sentative for queen at the Westby Ski Tournament. Now as we pass from the harbor into deeper channels, we realize that the Class of 1965 will be the last to pass through the hallowed halls of Hillsboro High School. Nostalgia sweeps over us as we recall blissful and tense moments, studying, friendly rooms, and most of all, friends we have known for four years.
